Doechii – Alligator Bites Never Heal (Top Albums 2024)

· by Eric Cohen

Born Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon in Tampa, Florida, Doechii is a bonafide phenomenon, racking up countless nominations, awards, critical acclaim, and adoration from her fans in a very short time. After going viral on TikTok in 2021 with her song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake”, Doechii quickly forged her own path in the hip hip world with her idiosyncratic take on rapping that sets her waaaaay apart from many of her contemporaries. With Alligator Bites Never Heal, she ups the ante, coming out hot in on the first track, spitting lyrics with a similar cadence to MF Doom, taking a page from the Quasimoto / Kendrick playbook (with a dual personality rap track), then other times paying homage to queens of the scene like MC Lyte and icons like Busta Rhymes. She also released a new Tiny Desk Concert that showcases why she is one of the most creative forces in hip hop these days.
