Best Albums of 2025: Antoine Corriveau – Oiseau de nuit

· by Simon Gervais

With Oiseau de nuit, Antoine Corriveau released one of his most daring and lively albums to date in 2025, marking a clear break with the northern, icy and melancholic atmospheres that had long characterized his music. From the opening track, “Suzo” propels us into a world where theatre and groove intermingle, featuring flamboyant narratives supported by nervous percussion and deliberately unsettling breaks in tone. The tracks flow together like unstable collages, ready to surprise the listener with a hip-hop rhythm, a burst of jazz, a pop hook or a psychedelic break.
One senses that the project is the result of sonic tinkering and truly unbridled creative audacity: recorded from improvisations and sound materials that have been cobbled together and then stitched back together, the album seems to breathe with its own organic life. This method results in a record rich in grainy textures and harmonic surprises, where each listen reveals new subtleties.
However, Oiseau de nuit is not simply an abstract experiment: melody and narration remain at the heart of the work, even when it ventures far from traditional paths. Collaborations — with Cherry Lena, VioleTT Pi and Rose Perron, among others — add colours and textures that enrich the stories of imagined lives that run through the record. Carefully considered and confidently executed, this album is both a celebration of creative freedom and a deeply personal work. Some may find its exuberance disconcerting, but it is precisely this boldness that makes it a major musical experience in 2025.
