Bachelords – The very best of volume B

· by Patrice Caron

A short, 5-song EP in the purest tradition of goofy rock, Bachelords are clearly not here to mess around and prefer their heavy metal with a smile. Superbly competent in the genre, the band dips into the rich history of first-period heavy metal and reinterprets the canons to their flavor.

Every piece has a “funny” moment, whether it’s a deliberately apparent lack of conviction or an exaggerated scream, guitars that overdo it or a particularly obvious accent. But it’s all balanced by moments on the mark, where the quartet is complete and they’d be capable, if they wanted to, of being on a par with those who find themselves serious about the genre.

But probably with little expectation of an international career, the band has chosen to have fun instead, and it’s infectious. That it’s well done, with musicians capable of doing it, adds enormously to the proposition, with the added bonus of a promise that we should have a good time if we see them live on stage. It sure can’t be sad.
