Since 2025, Montreal coldwave and synth-pop DJ Yuki B has kept a low profile — a handful of remixes for Virginie B and Annie-Claude Deschênes, nothing more. It was hard to tell whether original music was coming or whether she’d be content haunting the odd party booth. Most people know her anyway as the vocalist of jangle post-punk outfit YOCTO, who left us with one excellent album in 2023 and went quiet.
So “Romance” arrives with something to prove. The new single is a darkened synth-pop escapade, and it comes wrapped in a music video by Annabelle Fournier and Justine Lacoste—the filmmaker duo behind some of the most surreal and visually striking work in Montreal’s underground scene, including their videos for Alix Fernz.
The video is black and white. Yuki B appears covered in glitter and spiderclad makeup by Tetiana Kunts—somewhere between Bellatrix Lestrange and Siouxsie Sioux—dressed in a fencing jacket and mask, stabbing at the darkness again and again with an épée. When she finally removes the mask in slow motion, the effect lands. The whole thing reads like a Paris fashion runway that somehow ended up in a dingy Berlin goth club. It suits her vibe and the song perfectly.
