Suoni Per II Popolo lance son 22e festival annuel avec un spectacle qui lui tient à cœur. L’ardent pilier du jazz contemporain Angel Bat Dawid joue un set solo, puis Joe McPhee, ami de longue date et figure légendaire du free jazz, se joint aux musiciens locaux Silvervest 3 pour une performance libératoire de premier ordre.
Depuis plus de 50 ans, Joe McPhee est l’un des cornistes les plus impressionnants et les plus aventureux de la musique improvisée. Multi-instrumentiste, il est également compositeur et théoricien. Jahsun Promesse, l’un des batteurs les plus demandés à Montréal, est réputé pour traverser les frontières musicales afin de mettre en œuvre ses compétences finement ajustées dans l’improvisation en direct. Nicolas Caloia, bassiste, offre un défi stimulant à ses collègues musiciens et à son public : une inclinaison à multiples facettes, presque cubiste, qui est vivante et riche en forme, rythme, harmonie, mélodie. Kim Zombik est connue pour son style vocal sans fioriture et poignant, et sa démarche place l’intimité au cœur de son travail.
Silvervest 3 avec Joe McPhee créent intuitivement une musique qui s’ouvre à tous les possibles, faisant une musique vibrante et mélodique qui oscille entre l’esbroufe et la douceur, la rigueur et l’explosion, la caresse et le carénage, tout en restant profondément généreuse.
Angel Bat Dawid est une compositrice, improvisatrice, clarinettiste, pianiste, vocaliste, pédagogue et DJ noire américaine. Son premier album The Oracle paraît sur le label International Anthem Recording Co. (Chicago) en 2019. Enregistré en plusieurs endroits à l’aide de son cellulaire, l’album a été largement salué par la critique, Pitchfork le décrivant comme « un témoignage free-jazz, vibrant, spirituel, de la vie Noire telle qu’elle se présente aujourd’hui. » Reconnue pour ses qualités de band leader et d’interprète, Angel a composé et présenté plusieurs pièces live, notamment Requiem for Jazz au festival Hyde Park Jazz, et Peace : A Suite for Skylanding, commandée par la Art Institute of Chicago dans le cadre de l’installation Skylanding de Yoko Ono. Elle tourne à travers le monde avec son septet Tha Brothahood avec qui elle a sorti l’album LIVE (2020), ayant reçu de nombreux éloges et la faisant paraître sur la liste des meilleurs albums de 2020 de NPR Music et de la Best New Music de Pitchfork. Angel dirige également l’ensemble (composé exclusivement de femmes) Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty. Elle enseigne un cours, Great Black Music, au Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center via la Old Town School of Folk. Elle est clarinettiste dans le Black Monument Ensemble de Damon Locks, et anime une émission de radio musicale mensuelle sur NTS Radio. The Suoni Per Il Popolo launches its 22nd annual festival with a show near and dear to their heart. Fiery contemporary jazz mainstay Angel Bat Dawid plays a solo set, then longtime friend and free jazz legend Joe McPhee joins locals Silvervest 3 for a liberatory performance of the highest order.
Joe McPhee has been one of the most consistently impressive and adventurous horn players in improvised music for over 50 years. A multi-instrumentalist, he is also a composer and theoretician. Jahsun Promesse, one of the most requested drummers in Montreal, is renowned for crossing musical boundaries to implement his finely tuned skills in live improvisation. Nicolas Caloia, bassist, offers a stimulating challenge to his musical colleagues and his public: a multi-faceted slant, almost cubist, that is lively and rich in form, rhythm, harmony, melody. Kim Zombik is known for her unembellished, poignant vocal style, and her approach cruxes intimacy at the heart of her work.
Silvervest 3 with Joe McPhee intuitively create music that opens to all possibilities, making vibrant and melodic music that toggles between swagger and sweetness, rigor and explosion, caressing and careening, yet remains deeply generous.
Angel Bat Dawid is a Black American Composer, Improviser, Clarinetist, Pianist, Vocalist, Educator and DJ. In 2019 she released her debut album The Oracle with Chicago label International Anthem Recording Co.. Recorded using only her cell phone in various locations, the album received wide-spread critical-acclaim with Pitchfork declaring it, “a vibrant, spiritual, free-jazz document of black life as it stands today.” Known for her prowess as a bandleader and performer, Angel has composed and performed several live pieces including “Requiem for Jazz” at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and “Peace: A Suite for Skylanding,” commissioned by the Art Institute of Chicago for Yoko Ono’s outdoor Skylanding installation. She tours globally with her septet “Tha Brothahood,” with whom she released the album LIVE in October 2020, which received numerous accolades, including making NPR Music’s “Best Albums of 2020” list and Pitchfork’s ‘Best New Music’. Angel also leads the all-woman ensemble Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty. As an educator, Angel teaches her “Great Black Music” course at Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center through Old Town School of Folk. She is clarinetist in Damon Locks’ Black Monument Ensemble, and she hosts a monthly music show on NTS Radio. All of this and more is why Pitchfork recently highlighted Angel‘s work in their recent “Pitchfork 25 Next” cover story and included her on the “Pitchfork 25 Next “list, which identifies a select group of artist’s shaping the future of music. Named Winter JazzFest’s 2022 ‘Artist-in-Residence,’ where she debuted her “fearless expedition to ‘Afro Town’” (WBGO), and The Chicago Tribune’s “Chicagoan of the Year,” Angel returned to the stage this year for a performance at Carnegie Hall’s Afrofuturism Festival.
