Obscura

Groupe de heavy metal novateur originaire de Landshut, en Bavière, Obscura propose un mélange audacieux et complexe de death metal technique et de thrash progressif, qui a été salué dès la sortie de leur premier album, Retribution, en 2006. Avec une formation en perpétuel changement, le guitariste et chanteur Steffen Kummerer (connu pour sa guitare Ran à sept cordes au design unique) reste le seul membre constant du groupe. An innovative heavy metal group from the Bavarian town of Landshut, Germany, Obscura employ a heady and jarring blend of technical death metal and progressive thrash that drew accolades with the release of their 2006 debut album, Retribution. Featuring a rotating cast of virtuoso players, guitarist and vocalist Steffan Kummerer (known for his custom-shaped, seven-string Ran guitar) is the group’s sole constant member, and he has steered the black ship Obscura since 2002, issuing singular extreme metal outings like Omnivium (2011) and Diluvium (2018) that are as inventive as they are punishing. In 2021, after several lineup changes, the band issued A Valediction. Two years later, Nuclear Blast issued A Celebration I: Live in North America. Kummerer cleaned house in 2024, hiring an entirely different lineup to record and tour behind 2025’s studio outing A Sonication.

Atheist

Sans doute le groupe de metal progressif ultime de son époque, Atheist a développé un death-jazz d’une complexité vertigineuse, trop avancé même pour les amateurs de metal les plus aguerris. Au fil de trois albums enregistrés avec une détermination admirable malgré de nombreuses difficultés, leur style inventif mais difficile d’accès leur a valu un respect durable, tout en limitant leurs chances d’atteindre un succès grand public.

Arguably the ultimate progressive metal band of their day, Atheist’s impossibly Byzantine death-jazz proved too advanced even for committed metalheads to stomach. Over the span of three albums admirably recorded in spite of crippling adversity, the band’s inventive but inaccessible style has earned them a lasting respect, but likewise compromised their chances of attaining widespread success.

Origin

Basé à Topeka, Kansas, le quintette Origin se spécialise dans un death/grind metal d’une technicité, rapidité et brutalité exceptionnelles. Depuis leur premier EP de 1997 et l’album éponyme de 2000 chez Relapse, le groupe a misé sur un picking tremolo/sweep furieux à travers les guitares et la basse, des triplets/quintuplets de notes en 16e sur des cordes en accordage bas, et une orgie de blastbeats. Le guitariste Paul Ryan est le seul membre original. Le batteur John Longstreth a joué avec le groupe de 1999 à 2003 avant de revenir en 2007, tandis que le bassiste Mike Flores a rejoint en 2002. Le chanteur Jason Keyser est le frontman du groupe depuis la fin de 2011. L’album Antithesis (2008) a reçu leurs critiques les plus constantes depuis leurs débuts, tandis que Entity (2011) a été enregistré par le trio Origin avant l’arrivée de Keyser. Topeka, Kansas-based quintet Origin specializes in ridiculously technical, fast, and punishing death/grind metal. Since 1997’s debut EP and 2000’s self-titled Relapse full-length, the band put all of its chips down on furious tremolo/sweep picking across guitars and bass, downtuned, sixth string-riding triplet/quintet 16th notes, and an orgy of blastbeats. Guitarist Paul Ryan is the only original member. Drummer John Longstreth served from 1999 until 2003 and re-joined in 2007, while bassist Mike Flores joined in 2002. Vocalist Jason Keyser has fronted the band since late 2011. 2008’s Antithesis scored their most consistent reviews since their debut, while 2011’s Entity saw Origin record as a pre-Keyser trio. 2014’s Omnipresent showcased the triumphant return of the band as a somewhat slower-playing quartet. 2017’s Unparalleled Universe marked a return to speedy, brutal, technical death metal. 2019’s Abiogenesis: A Coming Into Existence compiled the band’s demos and other early Ryan-composed material, while 2022’s Chaosmos marked the quartet’s proper return to recording.

Decrepit Birth

Merging brutal physical power with an unerringly precise attack, Decrepit Birth are a technical death metal band from Santa Cruz, California. The band’s story begins in the mid-’90s, when vocalist Bill Robinson met guitarist Matt Sotelo, and the two discovered they shared an ambition to create truly uncompromising music. In 2001, things got serious when Robinson and Sotelo teamed up with bassist Derek Boyer and began assembling material. By 2003, the band had developed a reputation for their striking live shows, and they released their debut album, … And Time Begins, with the three musicians joined by drummer Tim Yeung. Yeung didn’t last long with the group, and in 2004 K.C. Howard became their new drummer. By the end of 2010, Sam Paulicelli became the group’s new drummer, replacing KC Howard, and Sean Martinez took over from Horner on bass in 2013. While Decrepit Birth toured hard in support of Polarity, the group took a break after Sotelo became a father for the first time and wanted to stay home with his young son. However, he didn’t stop writing new songs while on paternity leave, and with Sotelo and Martinez recording in their respective home studios and Paulicelli cutting drum tracks at a studio in Canada, Decrepit Birth returned in 2017 with the album Axis Mundi.

Fractal Universe

Fractal Universe est un groupe français de metal progressif fondé en 2014.
Avec leur deuxième album Rhizomes Of Insanity sorti en 2019 chez Metal Blade Records, le groupe a créé l’une des œuvres les plus complexes et captivantes du metal progressif du XXIe siècle, tant sur le plan musical, lyrique qu’émotionnel. Le groupe a fortement tourné pour promouvoir cet album, rejoignant les poids lourds d’Obscura en février/mars 2020, participant ainsi à l’une des dernières tournées avant la pandémie, et satisfaisant leurs fans tout en gagnant de nombreux nouveaux adeptes. Avec son successeur, The Impassable Horizon, ils sont allés encore plus loin, suivant sans effort la trajectoire qu’ils s’étaient fixée pour créer un album captivant du début à la fin.

Fractal Universe is a French Progressive Metal Band founded in 2014.
With their 2019’s sophomore record Rhizomes Of Insanity, released on Metal Blade Records the band created one of the most musically, lyrically, and emotionally complex and compelling progressive metal works of the twenty-first century. The band toured the record hard, joining heavyweights Obscura in February/March of 2020, making for one of the last tours in the world pre-pandemic, and in doing so sated their faithful while winning legions of new followers. With its successor, The Impassable Horizon, they have gone even deeper, effortlessly following the trajectory they set themselves on to create an album that is riveting from start to finish.
