Trios by Amy Beach and Rebecca Clarke

La pianiste et compositrice américaine Amy Beach a écrit son Trio avec piano en 1938, au crépuscule d’une longue carrière prolifique, commencée dès l’âge de quatre ans. L’œuvre témoigne de ses différentes influences, allant du romantisme au modernisme français, en passant par le folklore. Quant au Trio de l’altiste et compositrice Rebecca Clarke, il date de 1921, dans les derniers milles de la tonalité, et fait preuve d’une grande vitalité mêlée au drame de la guerre qui venait de prendre fin. Les deux œuvres, écrites en Nouvelle-Angleterre, explorent avec brio les possibilités des trois instruments solistes.

American pianist and composer Amy Beach wrote her Piano Trio in 1938, in the twilight years of a long and prolific career that began at the age of four. The work shows her various influences, from Romanticism to French modernism, and incorporating folklore. Violist and composer Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio is dated 1921, coinciding with the last moments of tonality and exhibiting great vitality mixed with the drama of wartime that had just come to an end.These two works, both written in New England, brilliantly explore the possibilities of their three solo instruments.

Le Festival de Lanaudière présente Schubert par Goerne et Kantorow

C’est une soirée à marquer d’une pierre blanche : le retour au Québec, après plus de dix ans, de l’un des plus grands barytons de sa génération, acclamé sur les plus grandes scènes du monde pour le velours de sa voix, son intelligence dramatique et la profondeur pénétrante de ses interprétations – et nulle part avec autant d’autorité que dans la mélodie allemande, son terrain de prédilection. Un programme que Matthias Goerne voue tout entier à Schubert, et qui marque le second concert au pays d’Alexandre Kantorow, prodigieux pianiste ayant remporté la plus récente édition du Concours Tchaïkovski.

This is an evening to remember: the return to Quebec, after more than ten years, of one of the greatest baritones of his generation, acclaimed on the world’s greatest stages for his velvet voice, dramatic flair, and the penetrating depth of his interpretations—nowhere more authoritatively than in the German lied, his repertoire of predilection. Matthias Goerne’s program is devoted entirely to Schubert, and marks the second concert in the country of Alexandre Kantorow, the prodigious pianist and winner of the most recent Tchaikovsky Competition.

Mike Gauthier Trio au Dièse Onze – Lancement d’album

L’approche expressive du guitariste Michael Gauthier est conforme à la philosophie de Aaron Copland: «La musique doit être aussi simple que possible mais pas plus simple». Improvisateur autodidacte, les prouesses de Gauthier comme artiste lui ont permis de jouer auprès de nombreux musiciens de renom international. Son style musical évoque la voix humaine et est influencé par les guitaristes Kenny Burrell, Grant Green et Robert Johnson, et par les chanteurs Ray Charles et Jimi Hendrix. Ses compositions incorporent des rythmes dansants, des conversations lyriques et une touche de blues.

Michael Gauthier’s soulful approach to the jazz guitar follows Aaron Copland’s philosophy: «Music should be as simple as possible but no simpler.» A self-taught improviser, Gauthier’s prowess as a performer has placed him on stage with numerous internationally known jazz stars. His playing style evokes the human voice and is influenced by guitarists Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, and Robert Johnson, and singers Ray Charles and Jimi Hendrix. His compositions incorporate dancing rhythms, lyrical conversations and a touch of blues.

OMBIIGIZI – prononcé om-BEE-ga-ZAY, ce qui signifie “c’est bruyant” – est une collaboration entre Zoon (Daniel Monkman) et Status/Non Status (Adam Sturgeon), des artistes Anishnaabe qui explorent leurs histoires culturelles à travers le son. Leur musique commune est une rumination sur la famille, une célébration et un nettoyage holistique, avec un fort sentiment d’unité et de soutien affectueux. Amalgame de leurs héritages indigènes et de leurs architectures musicales personnelles, Daniel et Adam imprègnent leurs textes des récits de leurs familles, révélant des vérités et trouvant un terrain d’entente au milieu de leurs différences.

OMBIIGIZI – pronounced om-BEE-ga-ZAY, meaning this is noisy – is a collaboration between Zoon (Daniel Monkman) and Status/Non Status (Adam Sturgeon), Anishnaabe artists who explore their cultural histories through sound. Their music together is a rumination on family, a celebration and holistic cleansing, with a strong sense of unity and loving support. An amalgam of their Indigenous heritages and personal musical architectures, Daniel and Adam imbue their lyrics with their families’ storytelling, revealing truths and finding common ground amidst their differences.

Moktar Gania & Gnawa Soul au Club Balattou

En digne héritier de la dynastie Gania qui a tant compté dans la culture du Maroc, Maâlem Moktar Gania d’Essaouira s’impose aujourd’hui comme un acteur essentiel de la musique Gnaoua.

Initié par ces piliers de la tradition Gnaouie que furent son père Boubker et son frère Mahmoud, le jeune Moktar s ‘est produit dans le monde entier avec la famille Gania, mais ensuite aussi avec Randy Weston, Bill Laswell, Pharoah Sanders, Carlos Santana et bien d’autres … 

La rencontre entre le Maâlem Moktar Gania (frère cadet de l’incontournable et regretté maître Mahmoud Gania) et le groupe Gnawa Soul a permis de créer à Essaouira un style novateur à la frontière de l’esprit Gnawa, des grandes mélodies orientales du Maghreb et des vibrations de la culture Ouest Africaine.

Moktar Gania et Gnawa Soul apparaissent comme les nouveaux ambassadeurs d’une musique reliant le Maghreb et l’Afrique de l’Ouest célébrant les noces du corps et de l’esprit qui délivrent l’âme, que ce soient à travers des balades dédiées à l’élémentaire cosmique ou des titres rythmiques issus de la transe spirituelle.
Leur album GNAWA SOUL est sorti en mai 2022 sous l’étiquette Disques Nuits d’Afrique, en collaboration avec Nomad Roots.

As a worthy heir of the Gania dynasty that has counted so much in the culture of Morocco, Maâlem Moktar Gania from Essaouira is today an essential actor of Gnaoua music.

Initiated by these pillars of the Gnaouie tradition that were his father Boubker and his brother Mahmoud, the young Moktar performed all over the world with the Gania family, but then also with Randy Weston, Bill Laswell, Pharoah Sanders, Carlos Santana and many others …

The meeting between Maâlem Moktar Gania (younger brother of the unavoidable and late master Mahmoud Gania) and the group Gnawa Soul has created in Essaouira an innovative style at the border of the Gnawa spirit, the great oriental melodies of the Maghreb and the vibrations of the West African culture.


Their album GNAWA SOUL was released in May 2022 under the label Disques Nuits d’Afrique, in collaboration with Nomad Roots.

Rafael Payare dirige Daphnis et Chloé

Entendre la musique de Daphnis et Chloé, c’est se laisser transporter vers un monde de couleurs chatoyantes et d’exotisme suave, vers les mystères d’une Grèce de légende dont seul Ravel possédait la clé. C’est aussi un voyage dans le temps, vers le Paris du début du 20e siècle, celui des Ballets Russes et leur irrésistible effervescence. Le génial pianiste Jean-Yves Thibaudet débute à Lanaudière à l’occasion de ce troisième concert de Rafael Payare et de l’OSM, offrant sa vision du colossal « Prométhée » de Scriabine, flamboyante interprétation du mythe antique. En début de programme, nous assisterons à la création québécoise d’Elysium de Samy Moussa, commandée par le Philharmonique de Vienne et le Festival.

To hear the music of Daphnis and Chloé is to be transported to a world of shimmering colours and suave exoticism, to the mysteries of a legendary Greece to which only Ravel held the key. It is also a journey through time, to the Paris of the beginning of the 20th century, that of the Ballets Russes and their irresistible effervescence. The brilliant pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet makes his Lanaudière debut in the Festival’s third concert with Rafael Payare and the OSM, offering his vision of Scriabin’s colossal “Prometheus,” a flamboyant interpretation of an ancient myth. First on the program: we will attend the Quebec premiere of Elysium by Samy Moussa, a work co-commissionned by the Vienna Philharmonic and the Festival.

Les superlatifs pleuvent sur le pianiste français Alexandre Kantorow, révélé au monde par son triomphe au Concours Tchaikovski, en 2019, à tout juste 22 ans: virtuosité, beauté, élégance, …Le magazine Fanfare parle de lui comme d’un « Liszt réincarné », Diapason le proclame « nouvel astre du piano » ! C’est à Lanaudière qu’il consacre ses deux premiers concerts au Canada, en récital solo – dans un programme faisant la part belle à Liszt et son génie expressif – puis auprès du baryton Matthias Goerne, le lendemain.

Many superlatives have qualified the playing of French pianist Alexandre Kantorow, revealed to the world upon his triumph at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, at just 22 years of age: virtuosity, beauty, elegance, … Fanfare magazine speaks of him as a “reincarnated Liszt,” Diapason proclaims him “the new star of the piano”! His first two concerts in Canada take place in Lanaudière: a solo piano recital—a program dedicated to Liszt and his expressive genius—and a lieder recital with baritone Matthias Goerne, the following day.

Sasha Sloan est un être humain normal, mais “complètement compliqué”. Sasha Sloan est originaire de South Boston, mais vit à Los Angeles. Sasha Sloan a fait fondre une barre Hershey sur son ordinateur portable, elle était trop paresseuse pour en acheter un nouveau, et jusqu’à ce que son petit ami lui fasse la surprise d’un nouveau téléphone, sachant qu’elle ne le changerait jamais autrement, elle écrivait tous ses textes sur un iPhone 5 remis à neuf. Sasha Sloan décrit son style comme “Target chic”. Sasha Sloan essaie de s’adresser aux “filles silencieuses à la fête qui luttent avec leur apparence”. Sasha Sloan écrit des chansons que l’on “peut écouter tard dans la nuit quand on est toute seule et dans la merde – et peut-être se sentir mieux”.

Yussef Dayes au Théâtre Fairmount

Yussef Dayes est l’un des jeunes batteurs et producteurs les plus passionnants et les plus innovants du Royaume-Uni. Il a toujours été profondément impliqué dans le jazz. Plus connu pour son travail avec ses frères dans United Vibrations, et aussi comme la moitié du duo électrisant Yussef Kamaal, il développe son style depuis l’âge de quatre ans, lorsque son père lui a acheté sa première batterie.

One of the UK’s most exciting and innovative young drummers and producers, Yussef Dayes has been deeply involved in jazz as long as he can remember. Best known for work with his brothers in United Vibrations, and also as one half of electrifying duo Yussef Kamaal, he’s been developing his sound since age four when his dad bought him his first drum kit.

Musical landscapes : Barber’s Adagio and Jeanine de Bique

Originaire de Trinidad et Tobago, la soprano Jeanine De Bique poursuit une carrière opératique internationale couronnée de nombreuses distinctions. Elle fera ses débuts à l’OSM dans la rhapsodie lyrique de Samuel Barber intitulée Knoxville: Summer of 1915, qui relate une soirée en famille dans la petite ville du Tennessee.Également au programme, le vibrant Adagio pour cordes de Barber ainsi que des œuvres de la compositrice canadienne Jean Coulthard et du compositeur vénézuélien Inocente Carreño. Ces pièces sont liées par la notion de territoire : lieu de naissance et lieu de vie, il influence le parcours des artistes.

Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, soprano Jeanine De Bique leads an international operatic career and has garnered numerous distinctions. She makes her OSM debut in Samuel Barber’s operatic rhapsody Knoxville: Summer of 1915, which recounts a family’s evening together in a small Tennessee town. Also on the program are Barber’s deeply moving Adagio for Strings as well as works by Canadian composer Jean Coulthard and Venezuelan composer Inocente Carreño. The works featured are all connected through the concept of landscapes, places of birth and of dwelling, and of influence on the artist’s path.
