KOAN Sound is an English electronic music production duo from Bristol, consisting of Will Weeks and Jim Bastow. They initially gained recognition as dubstep producers, with earlier popular tracks including “Akira”. Some of their many types of music includes glitch hop, neurohop, and Drum & Bass. The duo have since released music on various labels including Inspected Records and Owsla, and have worked with a number of other artists, including producer Asa and singer Ed Sheeran.

Finalisée en pleine Seconde Guerre mondiale, il en a fait un hymne à la liberté et au bonheur, où la joie éclate et se fait feu d’artifice sous la direction de Kensho Watanabe. Tout aussi pyrotechnique, le concerto de la compositrice lettone Lūcija Garūta est un joyau méconnu que nous fera découvrir Élisabeth Pion, pianiste québécoise établie à Londres. Mais c’est de la baguette de L’Apprenti sorcier de Dukas, professeur de Garūta, que jailliront les premières étincelles.

In his Fifth Symphony, Prokofiev presents us with a mature piece of music, which had been with him for 14 years before he put it down on paper. Completed in the midst of the Second World War, he turned it into a hymn to freedom and happiness, where joy bursts forth and becomes fireworks under the direction of Kensho Watanabe. Equally pyrotechnic, Latvian composer Lūcija Garūta’s concerto is a little-known gem, to be discovered by London-based Quebec pianist Élisabeth Pion. But it’s from the baton of L’Apprenti sorcier by Dukas, Garūta’s teacher, that the first sparks will fly.

Without experimentation, innovation is impossible. For Rochelle Jordan, this desire for sonic expansion has been long embedded into her fusion offuturistic and ancestrally soulful R&B. To listen to a ROJO song is to absorb a phosphorescent but subtle blend of sampledelic 90s pop, vintage UK house and garage, 31st century electronic bangers, airy late night ballads, and progressive hip-hop.

Born in London to British-Jamaican parents, Jordan and her family relocated to the eastside of Toronto in the early ‘90s. Her father, a drummer, encouraged her love of art and instilled an appreciation forNorthern soul, and Jamaican reggae and dancehall. Bleeding through thewalls of her childhood bedroom, the adolescent Jordan soaked in the record collection of her older brother: funky UK house, nocturnal drum and bass, garage, and all the gospel samples contained therein.

Sans expérimentation, il n’y a pas d’innovation possible. Pour Rochelle Jordan, ce désir d’expansion sonore est depuis longtemps ancré dans sa fusion de R&B uturiste et d’âme ancestrale. Écouter une chanson de ROJO, c’est absorber un mélange phosphorescent mais subtil de pop samplée des années 90, de house et de garage britanniques vintage, de bangers électroniques du 31e siècle, de ballades aériennes de fin de soirée et de hip-hop progressif.

Née à Londres de parents britannico-jamaïcains, Jordan et sa famille ont déménagé dans l’est de Toronto au début des années 90. Son père, batteur, a encouragé son amour de l’art et lui a inculqué une appréciation de la soul nordique, du reggae jamaïcain et du dancehall. L’adolescente Jordan s’est imprégnée de la collection de disques de son frère aîné à travers les murs de sa chambre d’enfant : funky UK house, drum and bass nocturne, garage, et tous les échantillons de gospel qu’ils contiennent.

DYSTINCT was born in Antwerp in 1998 under the name Iliass Mansouri. His father was a singer and, as a child, DYSTINCT often accompanied him to his shows. His passion for music grew, but the singer found it difficult to speak freely about his ambitions, as his parents did not agree with his career choice. Nevertheless, DYSTINCT’s progressive personality meant that, at the age of 14, he continued to develop his musical talents professionally. This hard work soon paid off, with his debut single “No Ring Ring” boasting over 3 million views on YouTube and over 4 million streams on Spotify. His sound is described as a mix of urban and Arabic elements. He has already worked with names such as Chawki (Morocco), Franglish (France), F1rstman (Netherlands), DJ Leska (France), Zefanio (Netherlands) and many others. DYSTINCT is currently working on his debut album “Mon Voyage”, due for release soon.

Kaaris at L’Olympia

Kaaris, whose real name is Okou Gnakouri, is a French rapper born in Abidjan on January 30, 1980, who grew up in Sevran, Seine-Saint-Denis. Kaaris began his rap career in the late 1990s under the name Fresh, taken from Boaz Yakin’s film Fresh. He released a number of tracks, including Quand j’étais gosse, on compilations such as Niroshima 1.

In 2003, he finally returned to Côte d’Ivoire to work with his brother, who had settled there. When war broke out in the country, he joined a French military camp and managed to leave the country to return to France. He began rapping again, and in 2007 released 43e BIMa, named after the military camp where he had taken refuge in Côte d’Ivoire. This mini-album enabled Kaaris to make a name for himself and adopt his new artist name when he registered with SACEM. In 2010, he worked on a compilation project with various producers, but Kaaris left the project before the album was finalized. A year later, rapper Booba asked him to take part in one of the tracks on his Autopsie 4 mixtape. Shortly afterwards, he released a new mini-album entitled Z.E.R.O.

Il retourne finalement en 2003 en Côte d’Ivoire pour travailler avec son frère installé sur place. Lorsque la guerre éclate dans le pays, il rejoint un camp militaire français et réussit à quitter le pays pour revenir en France. Il recommence à rapper et sort en 2007 43e BIMa, du nom du camp militaire où il avait trouvé refuge en Côte d’Ivoire. Ce mini-album permet à Kaaris de se faire connaître et d’adopter définitivement son nouveau nom d’artiste, lors de son inscription à la SACEM. En 2010, il travaille sur un projet de compilation avec différents producteurs, mais Kaaris quitte le projet avant que l’album soit finalisé. Un an plus tard, le rappeur Booba lui propose de participer à l’un des titres de sa mixtape Autopsie 4. Peu de temps après, il sort un nouvel mini-album intitulé Z.E.R.O.

Quatuor Cobalt – Celebrating Women Composers

As a commentary on the Marisol exhibition, the Quatuor Cobalt will present the magnificent Suite for harp and string quartet by Rachel Laurin, and a new work by Venezuelan composer Adina Izarra commissioned by Salle Bourgie. Entitled Tres Miradas a Marisol, each movement bears the title of one of Marisol’s works featured in the exhibition.

En guise de commentaire sur l’exposition Marisol, le Quatuor Cobalt présentera la magnifique Suite pour harpe et quatuor à cordes composée par Rachel Laurin, et une œuvre en création de la Vénézuélienne Adina Izarra commandée par la Salle Bourgie. Intitulée Tres Miradas a Marisol, chaque mouvement porte le titre d’une œuvre de Marisol qui est présentée dans l’exposition.
