Nuits d’Afrique : Bejuco

Thu 20 Jul 2023 • 08:00 pm Afro-Colombian

“Afro-Colombian percussion, lilting marimba keys and ostinato guitars dance with the complex interplay of ancestral voices and polyrhythms, fervently carrying the laments and joy of the coast” (FIP, 2021). A product of the thriving contemporary southern Colombian music scene, Bejuco takes traditional Bambuco and Currulao and breathes new life into them with Afrobeat, Pop, Dub and Hip-hop impulses, in a vitamin-packed maelstrom orchestrated by multiple voices and the marimba, a typical xylophone whose practice is part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Bejuco’s debut album, Batea, was released in 2021 on the innovative Llorna Records label. “It sounds like the sea, it has the force of the wave”, illustrate the band members.
