Tara Moneka is a Black Iraqi artist and singer whose music bridges different cultures and traditions. Born in Baghdad and raised in a Sufi family, she turned to music at a very young age, exploring the rich sounds of Afro-Sufi, Arabic, and Swahili music. Her style blends jazz, R&B, soul, funk, blues, maqam, and Afrobeat, creating a sound that is both familiar and decidedly contemporary. She sings in several languages: Arabic, English, Urdu, Spanish, Turkish, and Swahili. Tara celebrates musical diversity as a universal language. Her journey began at age 13, when she caught the attention of judges on The Voice (Middle East) and collaborated with the Iraqi Children’s Culture House—experiences that shaped her artistic path. As the leader of Dijlah, an all-female group named after the Tigris River, she uses her music to advocate for women’s rights and empowerment. Over the years, she has collaborated with institutions such as the Aga Khan Museum, Koerner Hall, Uma Nota Culture, and The Opera House. Her music transcends the mere auditory realm: it creates a space where the past and future, the East and the West, meet, and where each performance becomes a journey of connection, transformation, and resistance to cultural boundaries.
