The Molinari is celebrating Montrealer Brian Cherney’s 80th birthday this year with his brand new quartet, written especially for the Molinari. Cherney’s music is always very sensitive and plays with subtleties. The second string quartet by British composer Thomas Adès, entitled Four Quarters, is divided into four movements, each representing a moment in the day. From the transparency of the harmonic sounds to the intense pizzicato, the composer plays with rhythms of great complexity but never hinders the sonic beauty of the work. Finally, Benjamin Britten’s majestic Second String Quartet transports us with its warm lyricism and with the great chaconne he wrote to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Henry Purcell’s death.
