Saxophoniste, compositeur et arrangeur, Jean-Pierre Zanella est très recherché sur la scène musicale du Québec. Zanella crée des liens très forts et a enregistré avec des artistes brésiliens tels que Marcos Valle, Altay Veloso, le groupe Boca Livre et le pianiste Marcos Ariel. Il a d’ailleurs reçu Ordem do Rio Branco du gouvernement brésilien. Il a huit albums solo à son actif, le premier Caminho qui a reçu une nomination Félix (1994), Mystic Infancy récipiendaire du prix Opus pour le meilleur disque de Jazz 98 Puzzle City lui aussi récipiendaire du prix Opus pour le meilleur album de jazz 1999 a reçu une nomination au Juno. Mother tree (2002) a reçu une nomination pour un Juno et un Félix et a gagné un Opus. Récipiendaire du prix SOCAN pour la meilleure composition jazz en 1998. Villa-Lobos & Jobim (2006) a reçu 2 nominations à l’Adisq pour le meilleur disque de jazz dans la catégorie interprétation et meilleur arrangeur. Infinito (2010) a reçu une nomination pour un Félix dans la catégorie jazz création. Son dernier album Quattro Venti a reçu une nomination Félix dans la catégorie album jazz de l’année 2017. Son nouvel Rio Minas a été lancé en avril 2020 a reçu une nomination pour un Félix et un prix Opus. Zanella est le récipiendaire du Prix Oscar Peterson 2011 remis par le Festival de Jazz de Montréal pour sa contribution sur la scène de jazz canadienne.

A saxophonist, composer and arranger, Jean-Pierre Zanella is very much in demand on Quebec’s music scene. He got his Master’s degree in Jazz at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY in 1982. Zanella has developed strong ties and also recorded with Brazilian artists such as Marcos Valle, Altay Veloso, Boca Livre and pianist Marcos Ariel. He has received the honorific Ordem do Rio Branco bestowed by the Brazilian government, and recorded with several instrumentalists from Canada and the US. He has eight solo albums to his credit: Caminho, nominated for a Félix (1994); Mystic Infancy, which received the Opus Award for best jazz album in 1998; Puzzle City, which also won the Opus Award for best jazz album in 1999 in addition to being a Juno nominee; Mother Tree (2002) was also nominated for a Juno and a Félix and won a Opus; 2006 release Villa-Lobos & Jobim was nominated twice as best jazz album, in the Interpretation and Best Arranger categories; and Infinito (2010) was nominated for a Félix in the jazz creation category. Zanella also won the SOCAN award for best jazz composition during the 1998 Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.
