Elle Barbara is an avant-garde singer-songwriter, recording artist, experimental theatre director, video director, performer, community worker, and pinup, based in Montreal, Quebec. Her music alternately combines elements of dance, disco, sophisti-pop, synth-pop, prog, jazz, and glam, with an interest in library music, orchestral music, and psychedelic soul. She has been an underground fixture in her native Montreal for more than a decade. A lover of the odd, obscure, and overlooked elements in pop music, Elle Barbara finds inspiration in unexpected sources, like off-the-radar acts Su Tissue, Francis Bebey, Martin Newell, and Alain Kan, in addition to mainstream luminaries such as Madonna, Marvin Gaye, David Bowie, and Mary J. Blige.

Les Freaks de Montréal (Un bummage à Aut’Chose) (21h)

Parlons d’Aut’Chose.

Let’s talk about Aut’Chose. The legendary band, formed in 1971, changed the face of Quebec’s musical landscape with its three albums released between 1974 and 1976. It’s a raw, real, alley-style poetry set against a backdrop of sophisticated and scathing rock. In 2005, longtime friend Ron McGregor reformed the band around OG guitarist Jacques Racine and singer/poet Lucien Francoeur. The star-studded collective brought together members of Voïvod, GrimSkunk, Groovy Aardvark, Tricky Woo, and Entre Aut’ to record Chansons d’Épouvante. A collaborative reinterpretation of the most memorable pieces from the repertoire. This Best Of album would serve as a vibrant celebration of freaks of all generations across the province for the next fifteen years. FME, today. The Montreal Freaks are reuniting to pay tribute to its two captains who passed away a few days apart in 2024. They will be accompanied by brilliant and scintillating guests, each ‘tinted’ in their own way by the influence of the music and the off-piste words of this indomitable wild beast of Quebec rock, who has become a legend.

TEKE::TEKE (22h)

While gazing at the sky one afternoon, TEKE::TEKE vocalist Maya Kuroki saw a cloud that looked like it had a bite taken out of it. The word that came to mind—Hagata—captured something profound: a trace, a mark, or a presence left behind. It’s this sense of duality—of being in-between worlds—that defines TEKE::TEKE’s new album Hagata (out June 9 via Kill Rock Stars). The Montreal-based psychedelic rock septet continues the adventurous spirit of their 2021 debut Shirushi, which fused Japanese folk, Brazilian garage, psych rock, and more. After months of expansive touring and free-form experimentation, the band returned to the studio determined not to pick a single path forward. “We went two ways at once,” says guitarist Sei Nakauchi Pelletier, embracing the layered, dreamlike quality of Hagata. From the lush “Jinzou Maria” to the thunderous “Yurei Zanmai,” the album explores transformation, memory, and the unseen forces that shape us. Each track is haunted by a feeling—an imprint that lingers. TEKE::TEKE no longer seeks definitions or binaries. Instead, they fully inhabit the liminal space between, where ghosts roam freely and creativity knows no borders. Hagata is both a mystery and a celebration of what remains.
