Imprégnée d’éléments du psychédélisme, composée autour de trames sonores éthérées et catapultant des rimes mélodiques bien acérées, la musique de Boutique Feelings (Montréal, QC) invite à la réflexion quant aux normes socio-politiques tout en proposant une variante alternative du hip-hop. Plus communément connu en tant que chanteur, claviériste et guitariste de l’ensemble de psych rock progressif Atsuko Chiba, Karim Lakhdar continue ici d’amalgamer les genres en alliant des composantes hip-hop, krautrock et électroacoustiques dans le cadre de son nouveau projet, Boutique Feelings. Contournant les méthodes de composition traditionnelles, il explore des thèmes relatifs à l’identité culturelle et personnelle, offrant une narration loquace mais décalée au fil de vers d’oreille habilement saturés. Lakhdar note que « la genèse du projet découle d’un amour pour le Hip-Hop et d’influences allant d’OutKast à Madlib en passant par Kim Gordon et Gorillaz ». Il en résulte une musique aux franges du rap, du funk psychédélique, du trip-hop et de l’échantillonnage. Le troisième extrait de Boutique Feelings intitulé “I.Y.W.M.” est maintenant disponible via Mothland, complétant le premier EP éponyme du rappeur et producteur montréalais.
Dusted with elements of psychedelia, compounded by ethereal sonic landscapes and catapulted by melodic rhyme schemes, Boutique Feelings (Montréal, CA) invites reflection on socio-political norms while offering an alternative take on hip-hop. Most commonly known as the singer, guitar and synthesizer player for the progressive psych rock collective, Atsuko Chiba, Karim Lakhdar continues to challenge genre classification by weaving together components from hip-hop, krautrock and electroacoustic music in his new project, Boutique Feelings. Subverting traditional compositional techniques, he explores themes of cultural and personal identity through vivid offbeat storytelling and catchy distortion-mangled hooks. Lakhdar notes that “the genesis of the project stems from a love for Hip-Hop, with influences ranging from OutKast and Madlib to Kim Gordon and Gorillaz”. As a result, the music toes the line between rap, psychedelic funk, trip-hop and sample-based music. Boutique Feelings’ third single, “I.Y.W.M.”, is out now via Mothland, completing the Montréal rapper-producer’s introductory self-titled EP.

C’est un univers aussi visuel qu’il est auditif qui prend forme au fil des collaborations avec son producteur Funkywhat, des designers, des photographes, des vidéastes et des réalisateurs de films : Magi Merlin a récemment fait ses débuts d’actrice en jouant dans le film « Mile End Kicks » de l’auteur-réalisateur Chandler Levack (« I Like Movies ») aux côtés de Barbie Ferreira (Euphoria), Devon Bostick (Oppenheimer), Stanley Simons (The Iron Claw) et Juliette Gariépy (Red Rooms). Alors qu’elle a récemment passé la majeure partie de son temps en studio, Magi Merlin est maintenant de retour avec “A Weird Little Dog”, un EP inattendu et sans concession qui est sorti juste à temps pour le début de sa tournée américaine avec l’artiste de jazz contemporain Nubya Garcia. Coproduit par Merlin et Funkywhat, le court-format voit l’artiste se pencher plus que jamais sur son intégrité artistique, évitant intentionnellement la commercialisation traditionnelle et faisant confiance à ses fans et à ses auditeurs pour prendre leur temps avec ce travail et, espérons-le, s’y reconnaître.
It would not be entirely accurate to refer to Magi Merlin as only a singer or a songwriter. Music is indeed at the core of her artistry, but her world expands beyond the medium. It is one that is equally visual as it is auditory, one that is continuously shaped through collaborations with producers such as Funkywhat, designers, photographers, video directors and even film directors: Magi Merlin recently made her acting debut with a role in the movie “Mile End Kicks” from writer-director Chandler Levack (“I Like Movies”). As she’s been spending the majority of her time in the studio, Magi Merlin is back with A Weird Little Dog, an unexpected and unapologetic EP which comes out right on time for the start of an American tour in support of contemporary jazz artist Nubya Garcia. Co-produced by Merlin and Montreal beatsmith Funkywhat, “A Weird Little Dog” sees the former leaning deeper than ever into her artistic integrity, intentionally avoiding traditional commerciality and trusting her fans and listeners to take their time with this work and hopefully, see themselves in it.
