C’est le mot qui vient à l’esprit quand on parle de la suédoise Sousou et du griot sénégalais Maher Cissokho, qui sont de retour à Montréal après avoir conquis le public de Nuits d’Afrique en 2015, puis en 2019. Regards tendres, sourires sincères, étreintes musicales, voix chaleureuses qui s’unissent… Leur évidente complicité apporte un petit supplément d’âme à leurs rythmes sans frontières. Contant subtilement romance à celles de la guitare acoustique, les cordes de la majestueuse kora sont au cœur d’un son tout en émotion qui transcende les traditions mandingues grâce à des insertions de mbalax, de folk, de soul, de blues et de reggae.

That’s what comes to mind when we think of Swedish-born singer and musician Sousou and Senegalese griot Maher Cissokho, who will be returning to Festival Nuits d’Afrique after having already won the hearts of Montrealers in 2015 and again in 2019. Tender glances, genuine smiles, musical embraces and the warmth in their voices unite them … and this obvious complicity adds extra soul to their rhythms that transcend borders. Romance subtly finds its way into the acoustic guitar and majestic kora strings at the heart of their enchanting sound that extends beyond Mandinka traditions with an infusion of mbalax, folk, soul, blues and reggae.
