Popularized by Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey, Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra, with its instantly recognizable opening motif, nonetheless contains a profound philosophical questioning, inspired by Nietzsche’s text of the same name, of the place and role of the human being in the Universe. In the hands of Rafael Payare and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and in the ideal setting of the Amphitheatre, it takes on a cosmic dimension, at the heart of an evening of which only the Festival has the secret.
