Le Köln concert – ou concert de Cologne – du pianiste américain Keith Jarrett s’est tenu le 24 janvier 1975 en Allemagne, à la salle de l’Opéra de Cologne. Ce concert, qui dure un peu plus d’une heure, est entièrement improvisé et débute par les cinq notes de la mélodie d’appel de la salle. L’enregistrement de ce concert par le producteur Manfred Eicher et paru sous l’étiquette ECM, deviendra non seulement l’album solo de jazz le plus vendu de l’histoire, mais également l’album solo piano le plus distribué de tous les temps, tous répertoires confondus.
Afin de célébrer le 50e anniversaire de cet événement musical d’exception, Festival Classica a commandé à l’arrangeur François Vallières une transcription pour quatuor à cordes à partir de la partition autorisée par l’artiste, éditée chez Schott. Tout comme ce fut le cas pour une autre œuvre monumentale du répertoire au clavier, les Variations Goldberg de Jean-Sébastien Bach, récemment transcrite pour cordes et continuo par le chef québécois Bernard Labadie, nous vous invitons à notre tour à un voyage virtuose au cours duquel vous redécouvrirez l’un des importants jalons du jazz sous un éclairage à la fois surprenant et révélateur.
The Köln Concert refers to a legendary performance by U.S. jazz pianist Keith Jarrett at the Opera House in Cologne (Köln), Germany on January 24, 1975. The entirely improvised composition begins playfully, with Jarrett imitating the five notes of the opera house’s bell that calls the audience to take their places. The Köln Concert album, recorded by producer Manfred Eicher and released under the ECM label, became the best-selling solo jazz album in history and the most widely distributed solo piano album of all time.
To mark the 50th anniversary of this milestone in musical history, Festival Classica commissioned François Vallières to arrange a version for string quartet, based on the transcription published by Schott and authorized by Jarrett. Like the 2022 arrangement of Bach’s monumental piano composition Goldberg Variations, transcribed for strings and continuo by Quebec conductor Bernard Labadie, this reinterpretation of Jarrett’s work offers listeners an illuminating and enchanting recontextualization of a true cornerstone of jazz and contemporary music.
