Natif de Victoria, en Colombie-Britanique, Al McLean habite la ville de Montréal depuis 1995. Depuis 2002, il enseigne le saxophone à l’Université McGill. Parmi ses expériences professionnelles significatives, il a fait partie du quartet Brian Hurley et du sextet Joe Sullivan. Avec le Vic Vogel Big Band, il a joué comme soliste. Avec le Joe Sullivan Big Band, il a agit à titre de compositeur et arrangeur. Il a joué et avec un nombre considérable de musiciens provenant d’univers musicaux différents tels que : Susan Anton, Offenbach, Herb Ried, Boule Noir, Lenny White, Tyler Mitchell, George Garzone et Slide Hampton. Pour son premier enregistrement titré «Personnel Transit», Al consolide son enracinement au jazz acoustique. Les célèbres improvisations d’Al ont été décrites comme “a fluid, masterful account of the entire lineage of the tenor saxophone”.

A native of Victoria, British Columbia, Al McLean has resided in Montreal since 1995.  He is a sought-after freelance saxophonist, and professor saxophone at McGill University. Al McLean is long time member of the Brian Hurley Quartet, Joe Sullivan Sextet, Josh Rager Sextet, and featured soloist, composer, and arranger for the Joe Sullivan Big Band, and the Vic Vogel Big Band, and has performed and recorded worldwide with countless artists of every style of music, including Susan Anton, Offenbach, Herb Ried, Boule Noir, Lenny White, Tyler Mitchell, George Garzone, and Slide Hampton.Al has fortified his roots in acoustic jazz with his first and long-awaited quartet recording “Personal Transit”, to be released on September 19th, 2008. Al McLean’s improvisations have been described as “a fluid, masterful account of the entire lineage of the tenor saxophone”.
