While certainly inspired by Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young, The War on Drugs is not just a copy of the folk-rock bands of the 1980s. Achieving his best album to date, leader Adam Granduciel isolated himself for several months to produce his elegiac music and lyrics, while keeping a note of hope in his voice. The guitar oscillates between colourful melodies and hazy, psychedelic arrangements, inviting the listener to a solitary, introspective journey. Each beautifully produced song is full of details evoking scrambled memories of an American road trip.
