Duo étrange – Opéra du Royaume au Studio Desjardins du CEM

Sat 18 Apr 2026 • 08:00 pm Classical Singing / Contemporary / musique de chambre
Studio Desjardins du CEM - Chicoutimi 20$ ou 30$
· by Rédaction PAN M 360

Praised as an ensemble “redefining vocal chamber music” (Pan M 360), Duo Étrange has enjoyed remarkable success since its founding in 2023. Established by cellist Sahara von Hattenberger and soprano Vanessa Croome, the duo is celebrated for its unique pairing of voice and cello, drawing on the intimacy and spontaneity of the troubadour tradition while remaining firmly rooted in the discipline of classical practice. Their voice–cello combination, lyrical, raw, and flexible, effortlessly moves between genres, offering audiences a sound that is both fresh and familiar. The concert will feature John Tavener’s exquisite Chansons d’Akhmatova, the Canadian composer Jeffrey Fong’s “Dans un sentier tout parfumé” from Le Roman de la Rose, and the world premiere of a French version of Maya Fridman’s L’Arbre de vie. Vanessa and Sahara’s story is intertwined from childhood. Both grew up as young musicians in small towns on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, just an hour apart, and pursued their studies at McGill University after leaving home at 16. Yet their paths did not cross until 2023, when they collaborated for the first time at Montreal’s Chapelle historique du Bon-Pasteur—one of the venue’s final concerts before a tragic fire. Their friendship and artistic partnership now seem destined, rooted in shared origins and a mutual desire to explore the world through music. Today, Duo Étrange splits its time between Montreal and New York.
