À LA SORTIE DE L’ALBUM SUIVANT, STRIDULUM, NME L’A DÉCRITE COMME LA « NOUVELLE FIGURE DE PROUE DU GOTHIQUE ». QUELQUES ANNÉES PLUS TARD, LE LA TIMES DÉCRIVAIT ZOLA JESUS COMME « UNE CRÉATRICE SÉRIEUSE ET DÉDIÉE, DOTÉE D’UNE ESTHÉTIQUE SOLIDE, D’UN VOCABULAIRE MUSICAL ÉPOUSTOUFLANT ET D’UNE VISION SÛRE D’ELLE ». NIKA BEGAN TRAINING AS AN OPERA SINGER AT THE AGE OF 10. SHE DISMANTLED THAT TRAINING TO DELIVER HER BREAKTHROUGH LO-FI RECORD THE SPOILS IN 2009, MOST OF WHICH SHE RECORDED AS AN UNDERGRAD IN HER ROOM AT UW MADISON. ON THE RELEASE OF HER FOLLOW EP, STRIDULUM, NME DECLARED HER “GOTH’S NEW FIGUREHEAD.” A FEW YEARS LATER, THE LA TIMES DESCRIBED ZOLA JESUS AS, “A FOCUSED, SERIOUS CREATOR WITH A SOLID AESTHETIC, BREATHTAKING MUSICAL VOCABULARY AND A CONFIDENT VISION.” BOTH PUBLICATIONS TURNED OUT TO BE RIGHT. HER UNMISSABLE VOICE IS SAID TO CUT THROUGH THE FASCIA OF REALITY.

Quel que soit le nom qu’on lui donne – soft metal peut-être, ou hard folk – la musique de Nennen est faite pour éclairer doucement les coins sombres, pour démêler avec amour les émotions complexes, pour refuser de détourner le regard. You Reflect the Light, le deuxième album complet de Nennen, est un mélange luxuriant, presque luxurieux, d’artisanat d’auteur-compositeur-interprète et d’atmosphère influencée par le slowcore.
