Night

· by Laurence Gauvin

This seventh album entirely devoted to pieces for solo piano from the Norwegian composer and pianist Ola Gjeilo is notable first and foremost for its very intimate atmosphere. The title of the album expresses quite well the calm that emanates from the numerous pieces presented. Its light and uncluttered texture – devoid of any form of density, whether in terms of harmony, rhythm or nuance – is suggestive of a quiet, cloudless night. A recurring element throughout the album is the presence of repeated rhythmic patterns, which give the music a highly meditative aspect. This last aspect is reinforced by the simplicity of the melodies from piece to piece, as well as by the unencumbered composition and the accessible harmonic language. Distinct from his works for vocal ensemble, orchestra or chamber ensemble, this production by Gjeilo reveals a new facet of the composer, while at the same time offering music that is both soothing and transparent.
