Bellbird au Dièse Onze

Bellbird est un nouveau collectif de musiciens montréalais. Leur instrumentation unique de deux bois, basse et batterie leur permet d’explorer des paysages sonores qui font allusion à l’harmonie sans être limités par elle. La musique de Bellbird est inspirée par les sons de la nature et l’expérience partagée entre les humains et les autres. Les compositions originales de chaque membre du groupe mettent en valeur leurs diverses influences, y compris le jazz, l’avant-garde et la musique folklorique.

Bellbird is a newly formed collective of Montreal-based musicians. Their unique instrumentation of two woodwinds, bass, and drums allows them to explore sonic landscapes that allude to harmony without being restricted by it. Bellbird’s music is inspired by the sounds of nature and the shared experience between humans and other-than-humans. Original compositions by each band member showcase their diverse sets of influences, including jazz, avant-garde, and folk music.

Les mardis Big Band avec Benjamin Deschamps au Dièse Onze

Benjamin Deschamps est un saxophoniste et compositeur reconnu par ses pairs de la scène canadienne de jazz, mais également par l’industrie culturelle. Il a entre autres été nommé « Révélation Radio-Canada Jazz » en 2017-2018, puis a remporté le Grand Prix TD du Festival international de Jazz de Montréal en 2019. Son esprit grégaire l’amène à collaborer avec plusieurs ensembles tels le Rachel Therrien Quintet, Odd Lot (Jacques Kuba Séguin), le Joe Sullivan Big Band, L’Orchestre National de Jazz de Montréal et le JazzLab Orchestra (Effendi) avant de plonger tête première dans ses projets de composition. Du trio au sextet, il joue avec des géométries variables pour donner la couleur plus adéquate à chaque œuvre. Deschamps s’est établi comme un incontournable de la scène jazz canadienne avec ses 3 premiers albums. Il a présenté sa musique avec succès aux quatre coins du Canada, faisant la tournée de plusieurs festivals de jazz au pays et en France.

It was through his classical music background that Benjamin Deschamps discovered jazz to finally make it his own. Although he cumulates artistic mediums (he is a flutist, clarinetist and arranger), it is his talents as a saxophonist and composer that have put him in the spotlight. His gregarious spirit led him to collaborate with several ensembles such as the Rachel Therrien Quintet, Odd Lot (Jacques Kuba Séguin), the Joe Sullivan Big Band, the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal and JazzLab Orchestra (Effendi) before diving headfirst into his own projects. From trio to sextet, he plays with variable ensemble sizes to give the most fitting touch to each work.Benjamin is recognized by his peers in the Canadian jazz scene, but also by the cultural industry. He was named “Révélation jazz Radio-Canada” in 2017-2018, and won the TD Grand Prize at the Festival international de Jazz de Montréal in 2019.

Alex Bellegarde Trio au Dièse Onze

Les jam sessions avec Alex Bellegarde et son trio sont devenus un pignon hebdo du jazz montréalais. Vous y croisez les grands noms du jazz d’ici et d’ailleurs, ainsi que la relève. La première partie, Bellegarde son trio et invités présentent les pièces qui les inspirent et dans lesquelles l’improvisation a toute sa place. Le jam prend tout son envol dans la deuxième partie et se poursuit des fois tard dans la nuit. Les intrépides viennent se frotter aux démons de la scène ou créativité, spontanéité et générosité sont au menu!

Alex Bellegarde’s dynamic Tuesday jam session has become one of Montreal’s hippest weekly jazz events. The first set fires up with Bellegarde and his trio, playing host to a range of well known talents from the Montreal scene as well as musicians from out of town. The jam opens in the second set, to any jazz musician with the confidence to step up and play… there’s an unspoken rule though: « If you can’t keep up, you shouldn’t be on stage ». A great place to play and chill… the jam continues on into the early hours !

Al McLean Quartet au Dièse Onze

Natif de Victoria, en Colombie-Britanique, Al McLean habite la ville de Montréal depuis 1995. Depuis 2002, il enseigne le saxophone à l’Université McGill. Parmi ses expériences professionnelles significatives, il a fait partie du quartet Brian Hurley et du sextet Joe Sullivan. Avec le Vic Vogel Big Band, il a joué comme soliste. Avec le Joe Sullivan Big Band, il a agit à titre de compositeur et arrangeur. Il a joué et avec un nombre considérable de musiciens provenant d’univers musicaux différents tels que : Susan Anton, Offenbach, Herb Ried, Boule Noir, Lenny White, Tyler Mitchell, George Garzone et Slide Hampton. Pour son premier enregistrement titré «Personnel Transit», Al consolide son enracinement au jazz acoustique. Les célèbres improvisations d’Al ont été décrites comme « a fluid, masterful account of the entire lineage of the tenor saxophone ».

A native of Victoria, British Columbia, Al McLean has resided in Montreal since 1995. He is a sought-after freelance saxophonist, and professor saxophone at McGill University. Al McLean is long time member of the Brian Hurley Quartet, Joe Sullivan Sextet, Josh Rager Sextet, and featured soloist, composer, and arranger for the Joe Sullivan Big Band, and the Vic Vogel Big Band, and has performed and recorded worldwide with countless artists of every style of music, including Susan Anton, Offenbach, Herb Ried, Boule Noir, Lenny White, Tyler Mitchell, George Garzone, and Slide Hampton.Al has fortified his roots in acoustic jazz with his first and long-awaited quartet recording “Personal Transit”, to be released on September 19th, 2008. Al McLean’s improvisations have been described as “a fluid, masterful account of the entire lineage of the tenor saxophone”.

Altsys Jazz Orchestra au Dièse Onze

Le Altsys Jazz Orchestra, fondé par la cheffe d’orchestre et saxophoniste Jennifer Bell et le trompettiste compositeur Bill Mahar, se spécialise dans les œuvres canadiennes originales et les œuvres moins connues de la tradition des orchestres de jazz. L’orchestre compte dans ses rangs des musiciens de jazz indépendants parmis les plus sollicités de Montréal, dont plusieurs sont eux-mêmes chefs d’orchestre, éducateurs et compositeurs à part entière. Ces musiciens sont réunis par un désir mutuel de perpétuer et de nourrir la tradition de l’orchestre de jazz.

Altsys Jazz Orchestra, founded by conductor/saxophonist Jennifer Bell and trumpeter/composer Bill Mahar, specializes in original Canadian works and lesser performed works from the jazz orchestra tradition. Altsys serves as a vehicle for Bill Mahar who has premiered more than a dozen compositions with the orchestra. The orchestra counts among its ranks some of Montreal’s busiest freelance jazz musicians, many of whom are bandleaders, educators and composers in their own right. These musicians are brought together by a mutual desire to perpetuate and nurture the jazz orchestra tradition.

Reconnu comme l’un des saxophonistes les plus talentueux de la scène mondiale, 18e récipiendaire du Prix Oscar Peterson qui souligne la qualité de son art et sa contribution exceptionnelle au développement du jazz canadien, Yannick Rieu fait partie de ces musiciens en constante évolution. Il aborde la musique sous des angles multiples par le biais de ses projets acoustiques et électroniques, l’improvisation demeurant la pierre angulaire de sa démarche. Musicien intense et intuitif, le saxophoniste ténor/soprano et compositeur obéit à sa propre philosophie de vie, sans aucun compromis : c’est un créateur en constante recherche musicale qui veut donner un sens à sa musique.

Recognized as one of the most talented jazz saxophonists in the world, Yannick Rieu is the recipient of the 18th Oscar Peterson Award, acknowledging his outstanding musicianship and exceptional contribution to the development of Canadian jazz. His music is best defined by its constant evolution. Through his acoustic and electronic projects, he tackles music from multiple angles, while improvisation remains the cornerstone of his artistry. Always intense and intuitive, he plays tenor and soprano saxophone, obeying his own philosophy, without any compromise. As a creative artist, he constantly aims at giving sense to his music.

Jean-Michel Pilc et David Binney au Dièse Onze

Né en 1960 à Paris, France, et également citoyen américain et canadien, le pianiste et compositeur autodidacte Jean-Michel Pilc s’est produit avec de nombreux géants du jazz: Roy Haynes, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, Jean Toussaint, Rick Margitza, Michel Portal, Daniel Humair, Marcus Miller, Kenny Garrett, Lenny White, Chris Potter, John Abercrombie, Mingus Dynasty & Big Band, Lew Soloff, Richard Bona etc. Il a également travaillé avec Harry Belafonte, en tant que directeur musical et pianiste, et a joué en duo avec la légendaire chanteuse d’opéra Jessye Norman.

Acclamé pour son talent de composition considérable et très particulier, le saxophoniste David Binney est l’un des musiciens de jazz les plus prolifiques de la scène actuelle. S’attirant les louanges des critiques et de ses collègues, David a récemment été désigné par le Jazz Times comme l’un des quelques « musiciens qui ont créé une scène de jazz alternative… tous jouent une musique aventureuse et originale ».

De formation classique et jazz, la musique du guitariste Samuel Bonnet se situe à la croisée de plusieurs univers musicaux, quelque part entre la résonance naturelle des cordes nylon de la guitare classique et l’improvisation jazz. A travers sa musique, il nous raconte son histoire intime et personnelle en dialogue permanent avec ses racines plurielles.

Né en Israël, Samuel a grandi à Paris et s’est installé à Montréal pour poursuivre une carrière qui l’a amené à tourner en Amérique, en Europe et au Moyen-Orient.

Il vient de sortir HYBRIDE, chez Odd Sound Records, son 5e album en tant que leader, offrant au public un espace où le son acoustique et l’interaction avec son trio sont au cœur de son œuvre.

With a classical and jazz background, guitarist Samuel Bonnet’s music is at the crossroads of several musical universes, somewhere between the natural resonance of classical guitar nylon strings and jazz improvisation. Through his music, he tells us his intimate and personal story in continuous dialogue with his plural roots.

Born in Israel, Samuel grew up in Paris and moved to Montreal to pursue a career that led him to tour in the Americas, Europe and Middle East.

He has just released HYBRIDE (Odd Sound Records), his 5th album as a leader, offering to the audience a space where acoustic sound and interaction with his trio are at the heart of his work.

Olivier Hébert au Dièse Onze

Olivier Hébert propose une mini fanfare alliant la puissance des cuivres et l’agilité d’une petite formation. Il compose pour ce quatuor en s’inspirant du légendaire ‘pocket brass band’ du tromboniste Ray Anderson.

Il puise dans divers courant musicaux, flirtant avec le funk, le blues, le swing et même la cumbia. Cette formation mets en valeur d’une part le talent des instrumentistes-improvisateurs et d’autre part la créativité du compositeur.

Rang C, EP lancé en novembre dernier fait suite au deuxième album intitulé Correspondance, lancé en 2019.

Olivier Hébert offers a mini fanfare combining the power of the brass and the agility of a small formation. He composes for this quartet inspired by the legendary ‘pocket brass band’ of trombonist Ray Anderson.

He draws from various musical currents, flirting with funk, blues, swing and even cumbia. This formation highlights on the one hand the talent of the instrumentalists-improvisers and on the other hand the creativity of the composer.

Peter Hum au Dièse Onze

Le pianiste Peter Hum est un pilier de la scène jazz d’Ottawa depuis trois décennies et en 2022, il a présenté sa musique originale lors de concerts de Vancouver à Charlottetown. Son plus récent disque, Ordinary Heroes, a reçu une critique quatre étoiles dans le magazine DownBeat à l’été 2020. Peter est heureux de faire ses débuts à Diese Onze avec son ami et collaborateur de longue date, le saxophoniste ténor Kenji Omae, basé à Halifax, et quatre des meilleurs musiciens de jazz de Montréal.

Pianist Peter Hum has been a mainstay of Ottawa’s jazz scene for three decades and in 2022 he presented his original music at concerts from Vancouver to Charlottetown. His most recent record, Ordinary Heroes, received a four-star review in DownBeat magazine in the summer of 2020. Peter is pleased to make his debut at Diese Onze with his long-time friend and collaborator, Halifax-based tenor saxophonist Kenji Omae, and four of Montreal’s finest jazz musicians.
