FME 2025: APACALDA Cracks the Door for Us

by Lyle Hendriks

Bringing together dark tones, bedroom boudoir, and electrifying pop sensibilities, APACALDA was one of the steadiest acts at FME on Saturday. Cassandra Angheluta brought incredible intimacy to the once-sterile environment of L’ordre Loyal des Moose, drawing us in with dark, heavy, yet incredibly restrained and refined tracks. Her band, made up of Raphy Bedard de Vilca (bass) and Caleb LeBel (drums), is right in the pocket alongside her, pulling us through pitch-black waters like ferrymen as we’re treated to maze-like song structures and captivating vocals. Bedard de Vilca plays with poise and a seemingly endless supply of restrained energy, while LeBel’s intricate, subtle drum work provides the perfect energy.

The word for Apacalda is restraint. Like a tight bandage on an old wound, Angheluta can shift effortlessly from breathy, secretive passages to incredible climaxes, dancing on a tightrope in a world of her own while she does.

There’s a deep reservoir of vulnerability and pain behind the initially catchy offerings of Apacalda, something that feels almost too private to look at directly. But still, Angheluta pulls us back every time, inviting us, then demanding us to look at the bloodied parts of her that produce such a visceral, compelling sound. Apacalda is at once instantly approachable and deeply challenging, caught in the middle of two extremes to deliver a beautiful tension unlike anything else we saw this weekend.

FME 2025: La Flemme, a blender for everyone

by Stephan Boissonneault

There have been many hair-brained garage psych rock bands at FME, bands that can definitely list a group like Oh Sees as a main influence, but La Flemme might be among the most genuine. This Franco four-piece from Marseille, France, brings an uncontained intensity for the party, most likely the kind of people you can confide in during a rowdy 4 am rager or start of an unruly business adventure. The visuals from Anthony Piazza were legendary as always, and my favourite had to be the blender cycloning some icing that was actually planet Earth.

FME 2025: Bells Larsen tames the wild night

by Stephan Boissonneault

Speaking strictly from experience, it is pleasing and good for one’s health to check out some of the lighter folk fair at FME. But Bell’s Larsen brought one of those most vulnerable and calming sets to the Agora Des Arts I’ve seen in years. Under the gorgeous, seated venue, the singer-songwriter (now based in Montreal) weaved through songs from his fantastic Blurring Time album. This record got quite a bit of national attention after he was forced to cancel his US tour due to a new anti-transgender visa law.

Audience members were stunned and stupefied. I even spotted one woman tearing up near the end of the set. It was an intimate set from Bells, who has always worn his heart on his sleeve. The band was also on point, giving Bells the spotlight, but jumping in for a glowing moment or two. The lighting was dark, but with the standard red shapes blasting off the walls, it was a strange and almost esoteric vibe. I was only able to witness four or so songs (that’s how festivals like this go), but those four will be lodged in my brain stem for some time. A wonderful and tame set for an otherwise wild and loose night.

FME 2025: Puffer is hardcore healing for the soul

by Stephan Boissonneault

Puffer was the last show of an eventful FME Day 2. This working man’s hardcore punk group from Montreal doesn’t play its hometown much, so their 1:30 am basement show was somewhat of a marvel. As they jumped into a track from the Street Hassle LP, the mosh began and never really ceased until the set was over. This band never slows down. I never saw them break speed or rest for a sip of water; just a pure onslaught of heavy punk. Heavy riffs, crashing drums, and a frontman leading the charge, pure maximum rock n roll. We’re all sweaty, bruised and a little tired, but Puffer is giving it their all and we do the same.

It’s always nice to see other bands watching hometown heroes, but in the front row of Puffer’s set was Lieselot Elzinga of Amsterdam’s Baby Berserk (who held a wild midnight secret show in the parking lot of Morasse Poutine). Many claim they know the best way to end a raucous night at FME, but no doubt about it, Puffer is hardcore healing for the soul.

FME 2025: Super Duty Tough Work Makes It Look Easy

by Lyle Hendriks

There’s a sincere quality to Brendan Grey, frontman and emcee for the Manitoba-borne Super Duty Tough Work. He has an artful, rambling way of spitting his lyrics, seemingly blurring the lines between freestyle and written performance as he canters through his literary style. Supported by a truly outstanding live band to bring the classic jazz-hop foundation into focus. Grey commands his players deftly as he goes, hushing the drums here, redirecting the piano there, all while effortlessly spitting thousands of syllables as though he was simply taking a breath.

At one point, Grey took an interlude to discuss what keeps the band going. The love from the audiences, their love for the music. But above all else—it’s the merch. He earns a laugh from us and jumps quickly into more esoteric tracks, most notably an original, semi-MF DOOM-inspired cut entitled “Fuck the Police,” which won the crowd over with ease as Grey strutted across the stage with grace, poise, and sheer willpower.

When you listen to Super Duty Tough Work, it’s easy to feel the love and gratitude that each member exudes. Criminally tight and completely enmeshed in their music and their message, this group deserves your attention, your money, and your time.

FME : FIN DE SOIRÉE – Automelodi au sous-sol du Petit Théâtre du Vieux Noranda

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Formed in 2006, Automelodi is a constantly evolving project based around the solo work of songwriter/producer Xavier Paradis. With a career that spans over two decades, Paradis is a well-established figure in Montreal’s dense electronic music culture, releasing over time with various projects, performance line-ups, or under different monikers such as Arnaud Lazlaud. He also collaborates with artists like Liz Wendelbo (of Xeno & Oaklander) as the duo Liz and László, as well as Latvian Producer Dmitry Distant. Automelodi’s music embraces and re-contextualizes a spectrum of influences that include the lesser-known European synthpop and post-punk of the latter Twentieth Century, combined with literary stylizations reminiscent of Gallic songwriters such as Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Fontaine—with nearly all vocals delivered in French. Following the self-released first EP, an eponymous album was released in 2010 by the now defunct Brooklyn label Wierd Records. The second LP, “Surlendemains acides”, was released in digital format in 2013. A third LP, “Mirages au futur verre-brisé” was released in 2019 on Austin’s Holodeck Records. The release was followed that same year by an extensive tour of Europe. Automelodi resumed touring in 2023, with several dates across the USA and is currently working on a collection of new songs, including an EP and some singles to be released in 2025. In parallel to his work as Automelodi, Paradis has also been very active over the past two decades as a music producer, focusing primarily on mixing and remixing for other projects and artists such as Bootblacks, Silent EM, The Harrow and Laura Krieg.

FME : SHOW DE CLÔTURE – Teke::Teke, Les Freaks de Montréal (Un hommage à Aut’Chose) et Elle Barbara au Paramount

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Elle Barbara is an avant-garde singer-songwriter, recording artist, experimental theatre director, video director, performer, community worker, and pinup, based in Montreal, Quebec. Her music alternately combines elements of dance, disco, sophisti-pop, synth-pop, prog, jazz, and glam, with an interest in library music, orchestral music, and psychedelic soul. She has been an underground fixture in her native Montreal for more than a decade. A lover of the odd, obscure, and overlooked elements in pop music, Elle Barbara finds inspiration in unexpected sources, like off-the-radar acts Su Tissue, Francis Bebey, Martin Newell, and Alain Kan, in addition to mainstream luminaries such as Madonna, Marvin Gaye, David Bowie, and Mary J. Blige.

Les Freaks de Montréal (Un bummage à Aut’Chose) (21h)

Parlons d’Aut’Chose.

Let’s talk about Aut’Chose. The legendary band, formed in 1971, changed the face of Quebec’s musical landscape with its three albums released between 1974 and 1976. It’s a raw, real, alley-style poetry set against a backdrop of sophisticated and scathing rock. In 2005, longtime friend Ron McGregor reformed the band around OG guitarist Jacques Racine and singer/poet Lucien Francoeur. The star-studded collective brought together members of Voïvod, GrimSkunk, Groovy Aardvark, Tricky Woo, and Entre Aut’ to record Chansons d’Épouvante. A collaborative reinterpretation of the most memorable pieces from the repertoire. This Best Of album would serve as a vibrant celebration of freaks of all generations across the province for the next fifteen years. FME, today. The Montreal Freaks are reuniting to pay tribute to its two captains who passed away a few days apart in 2024. They will be accompanied by brilliant and scintillating guests, each ‘tinted’ in their own way by the influence of the music and the off-piste words of this indomitable wild beast of Quebec rock, who has become a legend.

TEKE::TEKE (22h)

While gazing at the sky one afternoon, TEKE::TEKE vocalist Maya Kuroki saw a cloud that looked like it had a bite taken out of it. The word that came to mind—Hagata—captured something profound: a trace, a mark, or a presence left behind. It’s this sense of duality—of being in-between worlds—that defines TEKE::TEKE’s new album Hagata (out June 9 via Kill Rock Stars). The Montreal-based psychedelic rock septet continues the adventurous spirit of their 2021 debut Shirushi, which fused Japanese folk, Brazilian garage, psych rock, and more. After months of expansive touring and free-form experimentation, the band returned to the studio determined not to pick a single path forward. “We went two ways at once,” says guitarist Sei Nakauchi Pelletier, embracing the layered, dreamlike quality of Hagata. From the lush “Jinzou Maria” to the thunderous “Yurei Zanmai,” the album explores transformation, memory, and the unseen forces that shape us. Each track is haunted by a feeling—an imprint that lingers. TEKE::TEKE no longer seeks definitions or binaries. Instead, they fully inhabit the liminal space between, where ghosts roam freely and creativity knows no borders. Hagata is both a mystery and a celebration of what remains.

FME : SHOW MÉTAL – Despised Icon, Scorching Tomb et Digital Ghosts au Petit Théâtre du Vieux Noranda

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Digital Ghosts (20h)

Digital Ghosts is a metalcore band from Rouyn-Noranda, founded in 2023. It brings together members from local bands such as Archons, Evil Prevail, Decrepity, and Within the Abyss. Currently in the studio, the band is working on its debut EP, a six-track release that will appeal to metalcore fans, especially those who enjoy Polaris, Architects, Erra, Spiritbox, and more.

Scorching Tomb (21h)

Born in the sewers of Montreal in 2018, it all started with a simple goal : blending old fashioned death metal and modern hardcore together in a city where technical death metal reigns supreme. It didn’t take long for the band to make a name in the underground tho. Fast, old school riffs, pummeling mosh parts mixed with energetic stage presence quickly earned Scorching Tomb attraction, especially in the hardcore scene. Initially formed by tattoo artist Vincent PL on vocals and axeman Philippe Leblanc, ST has now its hardest lineup to date by adding Miguel Lepage (ex- Blind Witness, ex- Obey the Brave) on bass and Émile Savard (Profane Order, ex- Malebranche) on drums, turning the band from another local act into an absolute fucking weapon. The time has come to follow the path of Cryptopsy, Quo Vadis and Despised Icon and show the world that Montreal is still to this day a reckless, unrelenting force of death metal.

Despised Icon (22h)

Despised Icon have long been hailed as pioneers of extreme metal, and their 2002 debut Consumed by Your Poison marked a seismic shift in the genre. At a time when death metal and hardcore rarely intersected, the Montreal band fused both worlds into something ferocious and new—what would soon become known as deathcore. Touring relentlessly with genre titans like Cryptopsy, Behemoth, Morbid Angel, Hatebreed, and Napalm Death, Despised Icon quickly earned respect across a wide musical spectrum. Their sound—defined by savage vocals, explosive breakdowns, and relentless blast beats—helped launch a movement alongside peers like Suicide Silence and Carnifex. Though the term “deathcore” has been debated and dismissed by some, there’s no denying the genre’s impact—and Despised Icon’s foundational role within it. After disbanding in 2010, the group’s members explored other musical paths, returning in 2016 with renewed clarity and intensity. Now, they embrace their legacy without hesitation. Despised Icon are back with full force, standing as one of the original architects of a sound that forever altered extreme music. No frills, no compromise—just pure, unrelenting power. The kings of deathcore have returned, and they’re not going anywhere.

FME : Ada Lea au Café-bar L’Abstracto

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Alexandra Levy, known as Ada Lea, is a Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist whose third album, when i paint my masterpiece, blends music and visual art through a deeply intuitive and imagistic lens. Each song feels like a painting—tactile, expressive, and full of emotional resonance. After years of relentless touring, Levy stepped away from the pressures of the industry to rediscover a slower, more honest creative process, turning toward teaching, painting, and poetry. The album was largely recorded live in rural Ontario in late 2023, with her core band and producer Luke Temple. Captured without a click track, its warm, acoustic textures recall the golden era of Canadian folk while embracing human error and spontaneity. Influenced by surrealists like Leonora Carrington and writers such as Olga Tokarczuk, Levy’s lyrics explore transformation, dreams, and the act of observing oneself. when i paint my masterpiece doesn’t chase perfection—it embraces becoming. It’s a poetic, open-hearted work where the process takes precedence over the product. With rich instrumentation and surprising melodic turns, Ada Lea continues to carve a singular path through music and art. The masterpiece, ultimately, is not an endpoint—it’s already here, in the making itself.

FME : FIN DE SOIRÉE – Fangus et Cure-Pipe au bar du Curling

by Rédaction PAN M 360

Cure-Pipe (00h)

Cure-Pipe is the explosive musical project of singer-songwriter Thomas Dakin, who surrounds himself with talented collaborators to deliver a raw, genre-blending sound. Combining psychedelic rock, garage pop, hyperpop, and classic rock, Cure-Pipe’s music is gritty, unexpected, and deeply authentic. Thomas offers no half-measures—his work is bold, immersive, and uncompromising. Following the release of his debut album Mazeless Loudness in 2021, Cure-Pipe quickly gained attention across Quebec for his intense live performances and hypnotic psychedelic aesthetic. With Le Pire (2022), he leaned into a more pop-forward direction while staying true to his garage roots. But it was 2023’s J’avais that marked a turning point: the album drew praise from fans and industry alike, solidifying Cure-Pipe’s status as a rising force in Quebec’s alternative music scene. That momentum carried through a packed year that included a Francouvertes semi-final, GAMIQ nominations, and a short European tour. Now, Cure-Pipe returns with J’ai trouvé Jésus, an album infused with what he calls “pure Saguenay grease”—bold, wild, and unapologetically his own. Thomas Dakin’s voice and vision are unmistakable. With each release, Cure-Pipe pushes boundaries and redefines what modern Quebec rock can be: messy, beautiful, and entirely true.
