FORUM MUTEK DAY 1 | New horizons : digital creation and curation

At its inception, the MUTEK Forum was held 6 months before the festival. In 2018, the two events have been grafted together, offering a unique perspective on digital creativity. Programmed by Sarah Mackenzie and hosted by Claudine Hubert, the 9th edition is entitled “Future currents” and will be held all week long at Les 7 doigts de la main. MUTEK offers us the chance to delve into a wide range of contemporary themes: the relationship between culture, technology and the climate crisis; accessibility and inclusion within immersive technologies; the power of tech; art, governance and artificial intelligence; and the future of festivals. PAN M 360 reports on the first day.

Opening talk – Festivals as radical rituals

Frankie Decaiza Hutchinson – founder of Dweller and cofounder of Discwoman

As programmer of the Bossa Nova Civic Club in Brooklyn, Frankie Hutchinson had a front-row seat to observe the impact of the electronic music industry on the expression of black artists and people, i.e. a lack of space and visibility. It particularly struck her when an artist approached her to organize a special event for Black History Month. Why limit yourself to one event, one week, one month? So naturally, she ended up taking the lead and creating a space for electronic talent from black communities to express themselves, in the form of Dweller, a DIY festival, launched in 2018.

Quickly becoming a “ritual” offering the necessary space for a form of individual and collective catharsis, Dweller has grown to the point of going international with an event at the famous Berghain (Berlin) and programming headliners such as Jeff Mills. With this expansion comes questions: how do you grow without sacrificing the intimacy of your events? How can we develop our audience without losing our curatorial perspective? And, of course, how to ensure its sustainability and financing? At Dweller, financing is largely based on merchandising, and the community can meet and connect in other ways on a blog, Dweller Electronic, which has a political dimension. These are all interesting reflections for thinking about the development of independent events, imagining the future of festivals and their community roots.s, qui comporte une dimension politique.

Panel – Future Festivals : Forging new horizons

Introduced by Maurice Jones of Future Festivals Lab, the aim of the discussion was to question the power of festivals. The discussion began with a round table on the challenges faced by festivals during the pandemic and the post-pandemic period.

David Lavoie of Festival TransAmériques was one of the 16 initiators of the open letter “Attention, festivals fragilisés” published in February 2023 in Le Devoir. The signatories joined forces to highlight their fragility and the issues they share, mainly the mental health of employees, the maintenance of events and their terms and conditions. The coverage of this letter enabled them to make their voices heard and initiate discussions with the government.t.

For Naomi Johnson, the priority was to pay the artists, which led to an evolution in the festival’s mission to become a content producer. In addition, experimentation with video-on-demand has enabled them to develop their audience. Naomi Johnson also laments the loss of institutional knowledge when there is a departure in the team, which makes the task of getting back to “where we were before” all the more difficult.

As for the NEW NOW Festival, the change was quite radical, as the annual event became biennial, the only way for Jasmin Grimm and her team to stay healthy. Like other festivals, they’ve had to contend with inflation, worker shortages and, above all, the climate issue. NEW NOW is held on the site of Europe’s largest former coal mine, Zollverein, in Essen (Germany). This historic site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. The site’s past and present use inevitably makes us reflect on the climatic consequences of yesterday’s industrial activities and today’s events. For this reason, the festival has taken up the theme of climate change and offered workshops on self-sufficiency to festival organizers.

A younger festival like NEW NOW has to deal with the bureaucratic issues associated with its heritage site. However, as with its counterparts, successfully bridging the needs of artists and communities is a challenge.

What about the death of festivals? As David Lavoie points out, institutions sometimes have to die, and we need to be able to address this issue if we are to foresee the future of festivals. That’s why the NEW NOW Festival has given itself a 10-year lifespan.

Airhaert est une musicienne multi-instrumentiste, productrice, DJ et artiste visuelle basée à Montréal. Interdisciplinaire, sa pratique fusionne des paysages sonores et cinématographiques aux tonalités ambient avec des grooves de danse électronique et des instruments acoustiques, tout en tirant parti de sa pratique en arts visuels.

Airhaert is a multi-instrumentalist musician, music producer, DJ and visual artist based in Montréal. Her practice merges ambient cinematic soundscapes, electronic dance grooves, acoustic instruments and visual art.

S’imprégnant du soleil et de la lune, Dawn to Dawn cherche à créer une expérience envoûtante avec leur mélange unique d’ambient, de techno et de breakbeat. Accompagnée de Adam Ohr et Patrick Lee, la voix de Tess Roby, teintée d’une nostalgie pop rappelant les années 80s et 90s, emporte leur synth-pop dans des eaux émotionnelles profondes, comme une marée électronique apaisante pour le corps et l’esprit.

Channeling the sun and the moon, Dawn to Dawn, seeks to create a unifying, mesmerizing experience with their unique blend of ambient, techno and breakbeat. A nostalgic 80s and 90s pop sensibility performed by Adam Ohr and Patrick Lee is shaped by Tess Roby’s intimate vocals, bathing their soft synth-pop in emotional waters, like soothing electronic tides for the body and soul.

MUTEK : Expérience 1 – Leon Louder, Moon Apple et Indus

Leon Louder est un compositeur et producteur canadien actif depuis 2003. Sa musique festive, à la fois chaotique et évocatrice, capte l’air (angoissant) du temps en y incorporant des sons atypiques et des cadences irrégulières. Utilisant des machines faites sur mesure, et plus récemment, des instruments faits maison, le travail de Louder regorge d’étrangetés percussives, de bouquets de micro-mélodies et de rythmes excentriques.

Leon Louder is a Canadian composer and music producer active since 2003. He makes chaotic, evocative, and celebratory music for paranoid times, incorporating unorthodox sounds and irregular rhythms. Using customized machines, and more recently, handmade acoustic instruments, Louder’s work is populated with percussive oddities, interlocking micro-melodies, and eccentric rhythmic programming, as well as spontaneous manipulation of recorded acoustic sound in real time.

Le nom de Moon Apple lui vient de sa grand-mère, une femme qui est devenue plus tard moine bouddhiste. Cette histoire d’origine donne le ton à la nature intime de son projet musical. Avant de s’établir à Montréal, elle a eu des histoires avec plusieurs villes, dont Séoul en République de Corée, où elle a été impliquée dans la scène expérimentale de Hongdae au début des années 2010s. Depuis, elle agit en tant que technicienne de son, productrice de musique, compositrice et designer sonore.

Montréal-based electronic musician Moon Apple got her name from her grandmother, who later became a Buddhist monk. Her origin story sets the tone to the intimate nature that permeates her musical project. While living in Seoul, South Korea, she was involved in the Hongdae underground scene of the early 2010s, and she has been making music since, as an audio engineer, music producer, composer and sound designer. 

Indus est un duo électro-folk colombien, formé par le producteur Oscar Alford et le percussionniste Andres Mercado, aka Doc Keyta.La discographie du groupe se veut une exploration de la musique traditionnelle colombienne à travers des techniques de production de studio contemporaines. Les sons vont de la techno d’inspiration champétéro au downtempo en passant par le currulao et l’afro pop, fortement influencés par tous les éléments de la culture afro-descendante et africaine présents en Colombie : les rythmes du mapalé, la culture picotera autour de la champeta et même les danses chantées de San Basilio de Palenque.

Indus is a Colombian Electro-folk duo composed of producer Oscar Alford and percussionist Andres Mercado, aka Doc Keyta.. The band’s discography aims to revisit traditional Colombian music through contemporary studio production techniques. Sounds ranging from Champeta-inspired Techno to Downtempo by way from Currulao and Afro-pop, strongly influenced by the numerous elements of African and Afro-descendant cultures permeating Colombia: Mapalé rhythms, the Picotera culture surrounding Champeta and even the sung dances of San Basilio de Palenque.

MUTEK : Satosphère 1

À l’occasion de sa 24e édition, le Festival MUTEK est de retour dans le dôme de la Société des arts technologiques [SAT] pour la Série Satosphère, un programme d’œuvres et performances immersives explorant de nouveaux territoires conceptuels et sensoriels.

Au programme: une exploration de la dualité entre l’analogique et le numérique (Metaract); un voyage surnaturel pour redécouvrir la transcendance de la nature (Iwakura); une immersion dans un rituel sacré d’union spirituelle (Union); une ouverture vers un monde spatio-temporel inclusif (I want to leave this Earth behind); et une expérience sensorielle autour de la physique quantique (Entanglement) .

For its 24th edition, the MUTEK Festival returns to the dome of the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] for the Satosphere Series, a program of immersive works and performances that explore new conceptual and sensory territories.

On the agenda: an exploration of the duality between analog and digital (Metaract); a supernatural journey to rediscover the transcendence of nature (Iwakura); an immersion into a sacred ritual of spiritual union (Union); an opening to an inclusive spatio-temporal world (I want to leave this Earth behind), and a sensory experience around quantum physics (Entanglement).

Altsys Jazz Orchestra au Dièse Onze

Le Altsys Jazz Orchestra, fondé par la cheffe d’orchestre et saxophoniste Jennifer Bell et le trompettiste compositeur Bill Mahar, se spécialise dans les œuvres canadiennes originales et les œuvres moins connues de la tradition des orchestres de jazz. L’orchestre compte dans ses rangs des musiciens de jazz indépendants parmis les plus sollicités de Montréal, dont plusieurs sont eux-mêmes chefs d’orchestre, éducateurs et compositeurs à part entière. Ces musiciens sont réunis par un désir mutuel de perpétuer et de nourrir la tradition de l’orchestre de jazz.

Altsys Jazz Orchestra, founded by conductor/saxophonist Jennifer Bell and trumpeter/composer Bill Mahar, specializes in original Canadian works and lesser performed works from the jazz orchestra tradition. Altsys serves as a vehicle for Bill Mahar who has premiered more than a dozen compositions with the orchestra. The orchestra counts among its ranks some of Montreal’s busiest freelance jazz musicians, many of whom are bandleaders, educators and composers in their own right. These musicians are brought together by a mutual desire to perpetuate and nurture the jazz orchestra tradition.

Les thèmes lyriques inspirants et engageants de la détermination, de la force, du dépassement des batailles personnelles et de la croissance abondent sur leur dernier album The Awakening, provoqués par des changements sociétaux extrêmes et la prise de conscience écrasante que nous disposons d’un temps très court pour être fidèles à nous-mêmes et vivre la vie à son maximum. Avec une production moderne et limpide dirigée par le groupe et le producteur de longue date Sascha Paeth, ainsi qu’un mastering réalisé par Jacob Hansen des Hansen Studios, le 13e album studio de KAMELOT, qui ressemble à une partition, est accentué par les contributions d’invités tels que Melissa Bonny (Ad Infinitum) et d’instrumentistes renommés tels que le violoniste Florian Janoske et la violoncelliste Tina Guo, nominée aux Grammy Awards pour sa participation à la bande originale.

Virée classique : Le Requiem de Fauré avec Rafael Payare

Le Québec possède une tradition chorale particulièrement riche et active, et la Virée classique est l’une des occasions de rassembler plusieurs chœurs amateurs québécois. Au plaisir de se réunir pour chanter en compagnie de l’orgue, s’ajoutera celui de partager des instants chargés de profondeur et d’intensité avec la musique inspirante de Fauré que dirigera Rafael Payare.

Quebec enjoys an especially rich and active choral tradition, and the Virée classique provides a fine opportunity to bring several Quebec amateur choirs together. Added to the pleasure of everyone singing together accompanied by the organ, there will be moments of great depth and poignancy in the uplifting music of Fauré, conducted by Rafael Payare.

Virée classique : Les célèbres Carmina Burana par Rafael Payare
