The Budos Band au Club Soda

Le Budos Band occupe une place unique dans la stratosphère musicale. Le son unique et intemporel du groupe a été échantillonné par Panic! At The Disco, Black Eyed Peas et Earthgang, pour ne nommer que ceux-là.

L’année 2019 a marqué un jalon décisif pour le groupe, lorsque Budos V a débuté à la première place du classement Billboard Heatseekers, sous les applaudissements de la presse, notamment de NPR All Songs Considered et du Rolling Stone. Leur dernier album, Long in The Tooth, a été enregistré en cinq jours aux Diamond Mine Studios dans le Queens, à New York. Les huit membres du groupe y ont la puissance d’un orchestre.

The Budos Band holds a unique place in the musical stratosphere. Their timeless and unique sound has been sampled by Panic! At The Disc, Black Eyed Peas and Earthgang, to name a few.

They reached a critical high in 2019 when their album Budos V debuted at first place on Billboard Heatseekers chart, applauded by the press, including on the NPR show All Songs Considered and by Rolling Stone. Their latest album, Long in the Tooth, was recorded in just five days at Diamond Mine Studios in Queens, NY. After one listen, you might expect a full orchestra behind the curtain. Instead, you’ll find the eight ruthless mavericks of The Budos Band.

Kassa Overall au Studio TD

Kassa Overall est un musicien de jazz, rappeur, chanteur, producteur et batteur issu de la scène jazz de New York. Il fusionne l’expérimentation d’avant-garde aux techniques de production hip-hop, poussant le jazz et le hip-hop dans des directions inexplorées. Unique en son genre, sa musique témoigne d’un vaste bagage musical, allant du G-Funk de la côte ouest aux sonorités de la scène underground new-yorkaise.

Kassa Overall is a jazz musician, emcee, singer, producer and drummer, a product of New York City’s jazz scene who melds avant-garde experimentation with hip-hop production techniques to tilt the nexus of jazz and hip-hop in unmapped directions, reflecting a panoramic musical background from West Coast G-Funk to the sounds of the New York underground.

Bass virtuoso and velvet-voiced performer Stephen Lee Bruner, aka Thundercat, will set the Place des Festivals alight. An unclassifiable artist, Thundercat draws on electro, psychedelic jazz, soul, hip-hop, R&B and more; in short, he is the epitome of neo-jazz.

DhakaBrakha au Club Soda

Le Festival est très privilégié d’accueillir la formation ukrainienne originaire de Kyiv DakhaBrakha. Le quatuor (trois femmes et un homme), qui s’efforce de faire rayonner les mélodies ukrainiennes dans le cœur et la conscience de la jeune génération en Ukraine, mais aussi dans le reste du monde, a donné plus de 300 concerts et participé à de grands festivals internationaux après avoir été découvert en 2011.

The Festival is very honoured to welcome the Ukrainian group DakhaBrakha from Kyiv. The quartet (three women and a man), who are on a mission to share the joy of Ukrainian melodies with the hearts and minds of Ukraine’s youth as well as the rest of the world, has performed over 300 concerts and performed at major international festivals after being discovered in 2011.

Curtis Nowosad Trio au Studio TD

Curtis Nowosad est un batteur, compositeur, directeur musical et enseignant basé à New York et nommé aux prix JUNO. Ce natif de Winnipeg est devenu une figure incontournable de la scène jazz new-yorkaise et internationale, tant à la tête de ses propres groupes que comme musicien accompagnateur. Il a joué dans les groupes de plusieurs générations d’artistes de jazz, dont Steve Nelson, Jazzmeia Horn et Braxton Cook. Il a également joué avec quatre NEA Jazz Masters : Candido Camero, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Owens et Ron Carter, en plus d’avoir enregistré avec un cinquième, Kenny Barron.

Curtis Nowosad is a JUNO-nominated, New York City -based drummer, composer, bandleader and educator. This Winnipeg native has become an integral part of the New York City and international jazz scene, both as a bandleader and a sideperson.  He has played in the bands of multiple generations of jazz artists including Steve Nelson, Jazzmeia Horn and Braxton Cook. He has also played with four NEA Jazz Masters: Candido Camero, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Owens and Ron Carter, and recorded with a fifth, Kenny Barron.

Sur Falcon’s Heart, Joe Grass extrait des sons frais de formes anciennes, déconstruisant la musique country intemporelle et la rendant kaléidoscopique. Les dix titres de ce nouvel album propulsif regorgent de couleurs et de textures, mais ils sont nés de la manière la plus simple qui soit : un homme avec trois accords et une guitare à gros corps, écrivant dans la tradition de John Prine.

On Falcon’s Heart, Joe Grass lifts fresh sounds out of old forms—deconstructing timeless country music and making it kaleidoscopic. The propulsive new record’s ten tracks burst with colour and texture, but they were born in the sparest way: by a man with three chords and a big-bodied guitar, writing in the tradition of John Prine.

Depuis près de vingt ans, Nate Smith joue un rôle clé dans la revitalisation de la scène musicale internationale grâce à son style de batterie viscéral, instinctif et profondément enraciné. Son curriculum vitae est vaste et varié : il a notamment travaillé avec de grands noms du jazz tels que Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, José James, John Patitucci, Ravi Coltrane et Somi, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns.

For nearly two decades, Nate Smith has been a key piece in reinvigorating the international music scene with his visceral, instinctive, and deep-rooted style of drumming. He holds a diverse and ample résumé — which includes work with esteemed jazz leading lights such as Pat Metheny, Dave Holland, Chris Potter, José James, John Patitucci, Ravi Coltrane, and Somi among many others.

FIJM : The Bad Plus

The Bad Plus sont les originaux par excellence. Une unité démocratique avec une vision claire et un refus de se conformer aux conventions. Fuyant les catégorisations faciles, ils ont conquis la critique et une légion de fans avec leur son unique et leurs performances en spectacle mémorables. 

Maintenant dans leur 21e année, ils continuent à repousser les limites. Les membres fondateurs Reid Anderson (basse) et Dave King (batterie) se lancent dans une nouvelle incarnation sans piano du groupe, avec Ben Monder (guitare) et Chris Speed (saxophone ténor), redynamisant leur son et leur inspiration.

Samara Joy is a once-in-a-generation kind of artist, one we might simply refer to as “Samara”, as we do with Ella and Billie. After winning the Grammy for Best New Artist at the tender age of 23 (much to her surprise!) and beating out contemporary music’s stars, people sat up and took notice. An absolute discovery.

FIJM : Nduduzo Makhathini

Actif en tant qu’éducateur et chercheur, Makhathini dirige le département de musique de l’université de Fort Hare, dans la province du Cap-Oriental. Il s’est produit dans des festivals renommés, notamment le Cape Town International Jazz Festival et l’Essence Festival (à la Nouvelle-Orléans et en Afrique du Sud). En 2019, il a fait ses débuts au Blue Note Jazz Club de New York, ainsi qu’au Jazz at Lincoln Center, où il était l’invité principal de Wynton Marsalis et du Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra lors de leur célébration musicale de trois nuits intitulée The South African Songbook au Rose Theater. Il est membre du groupe de Shabaka Hutchings, Shabaka and the Ancestors, et apparaît sur l’album Wisdom of Elders (2016). Il a également collaboré avec des artistes tels que Logan Richardson, Nasheet Waits, Tarus Mateen, Stefon Harris, Billy Harper, Azar Lawrence et Ernest Dawkins.

Active as an educator and researcher, Makhathini is the head of the music department at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape. He has performed at renowned festivals including the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the Essence Festival (in both New Orleans and South Africa), and in 2019 made his debut appearances the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, as well as Jazz at Lincoln Center where he was a featured guest with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on their 3-night musical celebration The South African Songbook in Rose Theater. He is a member of Shabaka Hutchings’ band Shabaka and the Ancestors appearing on their 2016 album Wisdom of Elders, and has also collaborated with artists including Logan Richardson, Nasheet Waits, Tarus Mateen, Stefon Harris, Billy Harper, Azar Lawrence, and Ernest Dawkins.

Black Midi est composé de Geordie Greep (guitare, voix), Cameron Picton (basse, voix) et Morgan Simpson (batterie). Originaire de la BRIT School, le groupe propose une musique qui a été décrite comme ambiante, avant funk, classique, drone, EDM, expérimentale, expéri-métal, hip-hop, indie jazz et plus encore. Bref, ils sont uniques. Soyons reconnaissants qu’ils existent.

Black Midi are Geordie Greep (guitar, vocals), Cameron Picton (bass, vocals), and Morgan Simpson (drums). Hailing from the BRIT School, the band’s music has been described as ambient, avant funk, classical, drone, EDM, experimental, experi-metal, hip-hop, indie jazz and more. Let’s just agree that they are unique and feel grateful that they exist.

Rafael Zaldivar Trio au Studio TD

Les compositions de Rafael Zaldivar témoignent de son savoir-faire comme pianiste et percussionniste, de ses nombreuses collaborations et de son héritage culturel. Né à Cuba, Zaldivar perpétue un riche héritage musical familial. Au cours de sa carrière, il a étudié auprès de certains des plus grands musiciens et joué ou enregistré avec plusieurs autres. Il a récemment reçu le deuxième prix du prestigieux concours international de piano jazz de Jacksonville, en Floride. Ses talents de directeur artistique, pianiste et compositeur lui ont permis de se forger une solide carrière sur la scène jazz canadienne et internationale.

Rafael Zaldivar’s compositions reflect his skills as a pianist and percussionist, his many collaborations and his cultural heritage. Born in Cuba, Zaldivar studied with some of the greatest musicians and has performed or recorded with many more. His talents as an artistic director, pianist and composer have allowed him to forge a solid career on the Canadian and international jazz scene.
