Le rappeur et chanteur canadien Drake a maintenu une présence commerciale de haut niveau peu après son arrivée sur la scène en 2006, que ce soit avec ses propres albums qui se sont hissés au sommet des hit-parades ou avec une longue série d’apparitions sur des succès de Lil Wayne, Rihanna et A$AP Rocky. Canadian rapper and vocalist Drake sustained a high-level commercial presence shortly after he hit the scene in 2006, whether with his own chart-topping releases or a long string of guest appearances on hits by the likes of Lil Wayne, Rihanna, and A$AP Rocky. En écoutant David James Allen, on a souvent l’impression qu’il canalise tous les disques cool que l’on a jamais possédés. Construites sur un funk roots qui tient à la fois de JJ Cale et de The Band, accentuées par des nuances de Daptone et de Bill Withers, ses chansons partent à la conquête de royaumes émotionnels peuplés de Bob Dylan, de Townes Van Zandt et d’Harry Nilsson. Comme pour tout grand art, la magie naît de l’alchimie et, plus important encore, d’une connexion à un niveau de conscience auquel peu d’entre nous ont accès.
Listening to David James Allen, it often feels as if he channeling every cool record you’ve ever owned. Built upon a rootsy funkiness that’s part JJ Cale and The Band, accentuated with shades of Daptone and Bill Withers, his songs spin off into emotional realms populated by the likes of Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and Harry Nilsson. As with all great art, the magic is conjured through alchemy, and more importantly, through a connection to a level of consciousness few of us have the capacity to access.

La Música popular brasileira (MPB) de Bianca Rocha, inspirée par les grandes dames de la musique brésilienne comme Rosa Passos et Elza Soares, emprunte aux Bossa nova et Samba sans jamais les imiter, intègre le Jazz sans jamais trop s’y attarder, puise dans les rythmes traditionnels comme le Frevo sans jamais s’apitoyer.
Invitée spéciale : Flàvia Nascimento – Expressive et généreuse, drôle et tendre à la fois, elle donne un relief particulier à ses compositions originales inspirées tant de la musique afro-brésilienne que de la musique populaire brésilienne.
A warm, dreamy ambiance. Soft lighting. A stand-up mic at the centre of the stage. Languid chords. A simple black dress. And Bianca Rocha’s clear, gentle voice rising up out of the mist. A bona fide artist. Then magic the happens and the instruments start to awaken—the brass, drums, double bass and electric guitar—to accompany the singer. Rocha’s Música popular brasileira, or MPB, inspired by Brazilian music icons like Rosa Passos and Elza Soares, borrows from Bossa Nova and samba without ever imitating them, integrates jazz without ever dwelling on it too much, and draws on traditional rhythms like frevo, without ever overindulging.
Special guest: Flàvia Nascimento – Expressive and generous, funny and tender all at the same time, she provides a unique texture to her original compositions that are as inspired by Afro-Brazilian rhythms as by popular Brazilian music.
“Enivrant hard blues antillais” (La Presse, 2021). Les insurgés de Delgres suscitent l’enthousiasme partout où ils passent. Il faut dire que leur touche est sans pareille. L’acoustique métallisée du bottleneck qui glisse sur les cordes de la guitare Dobro, arrimée aux sons de fanfare du soubassophone et à ceux d’une batterie désinhibée, enveloppent les Biguine, Quadrille et Mazurka antillais de rythmes Blues et Rock. Tantôt brute et fougueuse, tantôt ensoleillée et planante, chantée en créole ou en français, la musique de ce groupe nommé aux Victoires de la musique 2019 pour l’album de musiques du monde de l’année ne laisse personne indifférent.
“Intoxicating West Indian hard blues” (La Presse, 2021). Delgres’ rebellious intensity inspires enthusiasm everywhere it goes. No surprise, their music has a revolutionary feel like no other. Metallic acoustics of the bottleneck slide over Dobro strings, coupled with the tuba-like sousaphone and rhythmic drumming, animate Antillean beguine, quadrille and mazurka dance rhythms with blues and rock. Nominated in 2019 for a Victoires de la Musique award—the French equivalent of a Grammy—for best world music album, they sing in French or Creole to music that is at times fiery and raw or sunny and uplifting in a way that simply can’t be ignored.

Angélique Kidjo: Imperial Despite an Apparent Economy of Means
Undoubtedly, Angélique Kidjo remains this beast of the stage whose permanent object is to mobilize one by one her potential fans at each of her concerts. Rare are these conquering spirits of showbiz who have kept the flame of the stage for a lifetime, the Beninese diva is a convincing example. Insatiable, the winner of the Prix Nuits d’Afrique pour la Francophonie offered an electrifying performance as she has always done during her Montreal stops since the 90s.
Economy of means moreover: no ambitious stage sets on the program, no innovative lighting, no sophisticated arrangements, no large audiovisual means, no immersive context. Wednesday evening at MTELUS, Angélique Kidjo chose to run on arm oil, thus opting for the old school of Afro-pop evenings: West African percussion, drums, guitar, bass and a certainly boosted singer. Nothing else. This did not prevent his audience from dancing and loudly showing his love and admiration.
About 15 songs were on the program: original Kidjo songs, including Africa, One of a Kind, Do Yourself, Sahara, Meant for Me, Choose Love, Mother Nature, Free and Equal. Several tracks were taken from his most recent album released in 2021, Mother Nature, but without the luster of the excellent afrobeats productions, prominent in this very well kept recording.
The public was also treated to the famous covers of the performer including Bemba Colorá (Celia Cruz), Crosseyed and Painless and Once In A Lifetime (Talking Heads) or even Pata Pata (Miriam Makeba) in accelerated mode. The whole thing was accompanied by a surprise appearance by Louisiana singer Zachary Richard in an almost rap version of the Cajun classic L’arbre est dans ses feuilles, a version planned as a duet through which Angélique obviously had some difficulty adapting.
For the rest, a concert based exclusively on the sole and solid performance of its African soloist, a safe bet before the Eternal.
Chanda & The Passengers : Vintage Funk
In the same vintage spirit, the Montreal group Chanda & The Passengers, headed by soloist Chandra Holmes, offered a performance worthy of the 60s and 70s, a funk approach à la James Brown, Parliament/Funkadelic, Chic, à la Cameo… This magnificent singer with spectacular Afro hair can count on a powerful alto/contralto register and expresses herself in the rules of the art of an era prior to her own. It’s the same for its musicians keen on funk, jazz and also Afro-Latin music… from the previous generation. The eras coexist in the present, it is clear once again…

Boulila & Friends Make Club Ballatou Jump and Collide
Boulila & Friends provided a steady beat of African fusion, funk, blues, and Gnawan jazz to a filled room at Club Ballatou. Walking in, the dancefloor was immediately filled, with a nine-piece band; a saxophonist (Montreal’s one and only Damian Jade Cyr,) drums, backup singers, bass and keyboards, and leader of Boulila, Boudouch Yassine on guitar and the Xalam (a two-string guitar about the size of a big ukelele).
This band was ridiculously tight and well-prepared, going into instrumental jams between the afro-fusion numbers, and returning to the chorus in unions without looking at one another. The band took us to the desert with an almost Tuareg Sahara blues, reminiscent of someone of Mdou Moctar, but also the Calypso with the rhythms. It was a mystical performance combining the African sound with some more Western fusion and the crowd ate it up.

Naxx Biota Has A Voice for the Scene
Bringing a bit of Congolese rumba and a serene style to Montreal, Naxx Biota wowed Club Ballatou, even though the crowd was starting to drift away, as it was 11 p.m. But her soulful voice convinced them to stay for almost the entire duration of the concert. Naxx Biota’s voice and movements are both playful and robust. Although the music is upbeat and well-crafted, it’s her dance moves and faces that captivate the audience. There is so much passion in these songs. Committed but very festive, she pursues her inspiration in her high-quality “Mutuashi-Rumba-Sebene” style. I have never seen such a performance. Whitney Houston meets Erykah Badu.
Nuits d’Afrique : Blick Bassy au Théâtre Fairmount

“Si j’invite à un retour d’urgence aux traditions, c’est dans le but de mieux appréhender la modernité“. Pour Blick Bassy, ce sont dans les racines que se trouvent les solutions à de meilleurs lendemains. Chantées en langue bassa, les pièces de ce créateur aux multiples talents, partisan de l’Afro futurisme, sont poésie, douceur et sensibilité. Sa voix émouvante, ses intonations aux discrets accents d’un Gospel jamais oublié, habillent des mélodies aux couleurs de l’Afrique centrale teintées d’Indie Folk et d’Afro-soul. Le lauréat du Grand prix Sacem des musiques du monde 2019 présente son tout nouvel opus, ‘Madíbá’.
“When I call for an urgent return to tradition, it is in order to better understand the modern world.” For Blick Bassy, the solutions for a better tomorrow can be found in the roots of the past. Sung in his native Bassa language, the music of this multi-talented artist and proponent of Afrofuturism is gentle and thoughtful, pure poetry. His soulful voice, infused with a subtle hint of gospel, graces Central and West African melodies interlaced with indie pop and Afro-soul vibes. The 2019 Sacem Grand Prize winner for World Music will be showcasing his brand-new album, Madíbá.

Chanté en français, en anglais, en malgache ou en swahili, ce Rock Zangoma, pétri de Blues et de Folk, dégourdit les traditions chaloupées du Twarab, du Mgodro, du Chigoma et du Maloya. Auteur-compositeur-interprète et multi-instrumentiste, le finaliste du Prix des musiques d’ici 2022 présente son tout nouvel et troisième album, “Zangoma”.
Like the archipelago from which he hails, Eliasse’s music is volcanic; and, like the archipelago, it is touched by Western and Indo-Oceanic influences. Unbridled guitar, growling bass and fiery drums roll out the percussive rhythms. Infused with blues and folk, and sung in French, English, Malagasy or Swahili, his Zangoma rock unleashes the lively Taarab, Mgodro and Maloya traditions. Singer-songwriter-composer, multi-instrumentalist and 2022 Prix des Musiques d’ICI finalist, Eliasse is all set to present his third and latest album, “Zangoma.”
Nuits d’Afrique : Juan Carmona avec Youba Adjrad au National

Reconnu sur le plan international et repoussant les frontières de son art, Juan Carmona est une figure emblématique de la guitare flamenca contemporaine. Adepte du duende, il a côtoyé les plus grands noms du Flamenco et composé des œuvres qui sont interprétées par de prestigieux orchestres partout dans le monde. Il a également collaboré à la trame sonore du film La belle histoire, de Claude Lelouch. Son dernier album, “Zyriab 6.7”, rend hommage au pionnier de la musique arabo-andalouse: “un opus passionné (…) un voyage qui nous fait découvrir les délicatesses de la Méditerranée” (jazzradio.fr, 2021). “Partout où Zyriab est passé, j’invite un artiste emblématique du pays en question”. Youba Adjrad, algérien installé à Montréal et star du télécrochet Arab Idol, fait partie de cette liste sélective. Le compositeur et interprète de Raï, Chaabi et musique berbère est, dit-on, l’une des plus belles voix arabes au monde.
Always pushing the boundaries of his art, Juan Carmona is recognized internationally as one of the best guitarists of the new flamenco generation. Imbued with duende[AN1] , he has worked with the biggest names in flamenco and composed works that have been performed by orchestras worldwide. He also contributed to the soundtrack of the Claude Lelouch film, La Belle Histoire. His latest album, Zyriab 6.7, is a tribute to Arab-Andalusian music: a passionate work (…) a journey that lets us discover the exquisiteness of the Mediterranean” (jazzradio.fr, 2021).”Wherever Zyriab goes, I invite an iconic artist from that country.”[AN2] Youba Adjrad, an Algerian Arab Idol star now living in Montreal, is on Juan Carmona’s list of distinguished collaborators. This singer-songwriter of raï, Chaabi and Berber music is said to have one of the most beautiful voices of the Arab world.
« Sa voix est d’une telle douceur qu’à chacune de ses chansons, Naxx Bitota semble vouloir nous enlacer » a-t-on lu dans Le Devoir, en juin 2022, à l’occasion de la sortie de son album, “Kuetu”. Dans tous les registres, du plus festif au plus mélancolique, sa voix marque. Résonne. Émeut. Sa présence scénique impressionne. L’enjouée Naxx Bitota incarne la force et la splendeur de la femme congolaise. Tantôt elle rappelle la grande Tchala Muana, la reine du Mutuashi. Tantôt sa Rumba, exécutée en mode Sébène, avec de longues séquences de guitare improvisées, flirte avec le Soukous. Toujours, Naxx Bitota incorpore sa touche personnelle branchée sur une Afropop moderne, qui rend le tout irrésistible.

But Naxx Bitota always adds her personal touch infused to modern Afro-pop, making it all irresistible.

Nuits d’Afrique : Boulila and Friends au Club Balattou

Le Gnawa. Un rite, une musique, des danses. Un art inscrit au patrimoine immatériel de l’humanité de l’Unesco. La mémoire ancestrale, mystique, d’une ascendance d’Afrique sub-saharienne. Profondément ancrée dans la tradition, portée par les vibrations graves des cordes du guembri et le son claquant des karkabous, amplifiés par des répétitions entêtantes, ferment d’une transe libératrice, la musique de Boulila, lauréat de la 14e édition des Syli d’or de la musique du monde, renouvelle les codes de ce genre à la fois festif et thérapeutique par une instrumentation alliant guitare, saxophone, basse, piano et batterie, révélant l’africanité des musiques populaires occidentales.
Gnawa. Ritual, music, dance. Inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Gnawa represents the mystical, ancestral memory of sub-Saharan Africa. Deeply rooted in tradition, it is carried on the waves of the guembri’s bass tones and the percussive clacking of the qraqeb, and amplified by liberating trance-inducing rhythms that are both festive and healing. Winner of the 2020 Syli d’or de la Musique du Monde Award, Boulila reinvigorates the Gnawa genre with a combination of guitar, sax, bass, piano and drums, revealing the African spirit of Western popular music.
