Raoul and The Big Time at Upstairs

Raoul and The Big Time have been performing their particular brand of “Toronto/Chicago/Hollywood” Blues for over 25 years and return to Montreal for their first show since a headlining spot at the Jazz Festival in 2011! Maple Blues Award winners and International Blues Challenge semi finalists they have released five albums, played at major folk, jazz and blues festivals across the country and have recorded or performed with legends such as The Mavis Staples Band, Canned Heat, Bettye LaVette, Billy Boy Arnold, Curtis Salgado, Junior Watson, Mark Hummel and many more.

Raoul et The Big Time interprètent leur style particulier de blues ” Toronto/Chicago/Hollywood ” depuis plus de 25 ans et reviennent à Montréal pour leur premier spectacle depuis une place en tête d’affiche au Festival de jazz en 2011 ! Semaine du Neuf: Transformations

From the fluidity of water to the implacable mechanics of machines, SIXTRUM Percussion explores the transformation of sonorities through mechanical and electronic devices and materials.

Transformations presents five works in which the sound material is in constant variation, whether through the manipulation of instruments in contact with water, the expansion of acoustic sounds through electronic processing, or the continuous augmentation of an original sound through looped repetition. Three works inspired by the aquatic universe, in which sonorities are in constant evolution, contrast with the mechanistic, pulsating universe of two pieces by Pierre Jodlowski that will be presented for the first time in Canada, Mécano 1 and Loops 24.

De la fluidité de l’eau à la mécanique implacable des machines, SIXTRUM Percussion explore la transformation des sonorités au travers des dispositifs mécaniques et électroniques et des matières.

Transformations donne à entendre cinq œuvres où le matériau sonore est en constante variation, que ce soit par la manipulation des instruments au contact de l’eau, par l’expansion des sons acoustiques par des traitements électroniques, ou encore par l’augmentation continue d’un son original au moyen de répétitions en boucle. Trois œuvres inspirées de l’univers aquatique, où les sonorités sont en constante évolution, viennent contraster avec l’univers mécaniste et pulsé de deux pièces de Pierre Jodlowski qui seront présentées pour la première fois au Canada, Mécano 1 et Loops 24.

Instrumentalist Fanny Vicens imagines a recital featuring pieces for accordion, XAMP microtonal accordion and electronics.

For the release of the album Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out on the Studio éOle label, instrumentalist Fanny Vicens, a member of Ensemble Flashback, has proposed a recital in 2022 featuring a program of pieces for accordion, XAMP microtonal accordion and electronics. These mixed pieces are created by the performer in close collaboration with the composers with whom she reflects on the accordion’s sound identity and works to expand this repertoire. The recital features works by Nuria Giménez Comas, Alexander Vert, Pierre Jodlowski and Aurelio Edler-Copes.

Pour la sortie de l’album intitulé Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out sur le label Studio éOle, l’instrumentiste Fanny Vicens, membre de l’Ensemble Flashback, a proposé en 2022 un récital constitué d’un programme de pièces pour accordéon, accordéon microtonal XAMP et électronique. Ces pièces mixtes sont créées par l’interprète en étroite complicité avec les compositeurs avec lesquels elle nourrit une réflexion sur l’identité sonore de l’accordéon et travaille à l’élargissement de ce répertoire. Semaine du Neuf: Magali Babin, Microfaune

A vibrant encounter between high-tech and low-tech technologies, highlighting the beauty, fragility and crisis of our natural and sonic environments.

Interdisciplinary artist Magali Babin and guests Erin Gee and Thibaut Quinchon present an immersive space and art installation featuring performances by Ensemble SuperMusique and the Joker Choir.

Four works are on the program, including three creations: Magali Babin, who pays attention to endangered species living in wetlands; Erin Gee, who explores biofeedback and biosensors, how they vibrate in matter and their effects on light; and Thibaut Quinchon, who creates a sound installation that serves as an environmental link throughout the evening. The program is completed by a work by Sandeep Bhagwati composed in 2017, which fits perfectly with the evening’s theme (presented as part of the SMCQ’s Tribute Series).

Une rencontre vibrante entre technologies dites hi tech et low tech qui met en relief la beauté, la fragilité et la crise que vivent actuellement nos environnements naturels et sonores.

L’artiste interdisciplinaire Magali Babin et ses invité·e·s, Erin Gee et Thibaut Quinchon, présentent un espace immersif et une installation artistique où performent l’Ensemble SuperMusique et la Chorale Joker.
 Quatre œuvres sont au programme dont trois créations : Magali Babin qui porte attention aux espèces menacées habitant les milieux humides; Erin Gee qui explore des biofeedback et biocapteurs, comment ils vibrent dans la matière et leurs effets sur la lumière; Thibaut Quinchon qui crée un habillement sonore qui sert de liant environnemental à toute la soirée. Le programme est complété par une œuvre de Sandeep Bhagwati composée en 2017 qui s’adapte parfaitement à la thématique de la soirée (présentée dans le cadre de la Série Hommage de la SMCQ).

This concert features a transatlantic dialogue between European and North American composers presenting pieces with acoustic, electronic and visual elements.

Canadian composer James O’Callaghan (QC) uses live electronics to expand the special soundscape, while Lorenzo Troiani (IT) uses Lo-Fi electronics to act as his own instrument within the ensemble. Lisa R. Coons (US) and Nour Symon (QC) both work with visual elements visible to both audience and ensemble to present a live score. Tanja Brüggemann (AT) shapes her experiences during Hurricane Fiona in Canada into her new piece, and Pedro Berardinelli (PT) stands out in this program as the only purely acoustic composition.

Ce concert met en scène un dialogue transatlantique entre des compositeurs européens et nord-américains présentant des pièces avec des éléments acoustiques, électroniques et visuels.

Le compositeur canadien James O’Callaghan (QC) utilise l’électronique en direct pour élargir le paysage sonore spécial, tandis que Lorenzo Troiani (IT) utilise une électronique Lo-Fi pour agir comme son propre instrument au sein de l’ensemble. Lisa R. Coons (US) et Nour Symon (QC) travaillent tous deux avec des éléments visuels visibles tant pour le public que pour l’ensemble afin de présenter une partition en direct. Quatuor Molinari Presents « The Quartet According to Webern »

True to its tradition of performing complete quartets by a single composer, the Molinari Quartet this time offers audiences the complete 6 string quartets by Austrian composer Anton Webern.

Follow the extraordinary career of this master of the Second Viennese School.

The concert will be preceded at 6:30pm by a lecture by Jean Portugais on the composer and his work.

Soran, the young pop virtuoso from Montreal, knows how to dismantle grief.
When you’re alone, when life is tearing you apart, when the world’s walls
the world around you, making art can feel like an explosive way
through the darkness. “Every song should be made with excitement, otherwise it’s not
shouldn’t be made,” he says with a shy smile. Soran’s new album,
Loneliness Confetti (due March 15, 2024), more than delivers on that promise.
Oozing with vintage ’80s synthpop, Prince-like elegance and modern
modern pop maximalist wonder, the eight-track set is the latest statement from a
latest statement from an up-and-coming multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and lyricist
as he moves ever closer to the limelight.

Période de candidature – Résidence PHI Nord

PHI Nord is a residency program that offers Canadian-based musicians the opportunity to deepen and refine their musical projects.

The program offers a two-week creative retreat in a riverfront loft in the Laurentians, with exclusive access to a recording studio and technical support in sound engineering. This residency allows artists to escape the daily grind and engage fully in the exploration and experimentation of their art.

PHI Nord thanks SiriusXM Franco for its support.

Selected artists will receive:
Project development support and accommodations: A two-week stay in a creative home with exclusive access to a recording studio;

Stipend: A stipend of $1,600;

Recording studio support: Sound engineering support for up to 8 hours per day during residency;

Video profile production: Creation of a video of a live performance for broadcast on PHI’s networks (social networks, website, etc.);

Network access: Access to PHI’s extensive network of collaborators.

Eligibility criteria:
Be a musician living in Canada;

Have a defined musical project and wish to carry it out within the framework of the residency;

Maintain a professional musical practice in Quebec or Canada, or demonstrate a potential for career development in music;

Have released music that is available on listening platforms.

Groups are eligible (up to 4 members). Conditions remain the same as for solo artists.

Être un·e musicien·ne vivant au Canada;

Avoir un projet musical défini et vouloir le réaliser dans le cadre de la résidence;

Maintenir une pratique musicale professionnelle au Québec ou au Canada ou démontrer un potentiel de développement de carrière en musique;

Avoir fait paraître de la musique qui est disponible sur des plateformes d’écoute.

Les groupes sont admissibles (jusqu’à 4 membres). Les conditions offertes demeurent les mêmes que pour les artistes solos.
