Last night at Montreal’s Ausgang Plaza, singer-songwriter Erika Angell (of Thus Owls fame) launched her debut solo album, The Obsession With Her Voice (which was discussed at length in my interview with the artist – listen to it here!) The packed house resonated to the sometimes soaring, sometimes spiritually incandescent waves of the Swedish-born Montrealer’s music. Her voice, beautiful and in tune, was regularly manipulated by electronic equipment. Next to her, Mili Hong’s drums (excellent) sometimes gave the impression of having an independent life. But this was intentional. To round things off, there was a string trio with two cellos (Audréanne Filion et Jean-Christophe Lizotte) and a viola (Thierry Lavoie-Ladouceur), favoring the lower notes. The packed audience listened with remarkable attention to music that is, after all, demanding and sometimes even difficult. Angell’s music is not about seductive pop. She explores the expressive possibilities of her own vocal abilities through long, spare lines, but harmonically steeped in sophisticated modernism. The lyrics, too, raise the bar with thoughtful symbolism. That said, against a backdrop of beat box pulses of various stripes, purring post-romantic strings and often arrhythmic drums, the artist convincingly won over the audience, who showed a remarkably interested and respectful ear. The audience was in a state of trance in front of the stage beauty, which reached a level of musical quality matched only by other artists like Björk, Joanna Newsom or Kate Bush (even if Erika is stylistically totally different). Not a bad line up to be part of.

The Grand Orgue Pierre-Béique joins forces for the first time with the OSJM, a promising youth orchestra directed by Louis Lavigueur. Organ and orchestra will dialogue with solemnity and magnificence in a program full of color and surprises. You’ll rediscover Vierne’s Symphony for Organ No. 2, presented in an arrangement by Montreal composer Vincent Hamel, as well as Bach’s famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor in a surprising transcription by Stokowski.

In the opener, Don Juan enters the stage without caution, launching himself headlong into adventures of love… and music! From one symphonic poem to the next, Strauss takes us to Italy with his Aus Italien, in four evocative stops: the sun-drenched countryside, the nostalgic ruins of Rome, nature on the beach at Sorrento, and the simple, festive life of Naples.
Next, we take to the skies with flutist Juliette Hurel on l’Aile du songe, a concerto by composer Kaija Saariaho, who is a crowd-pleaser and a prolific collaborator, notably with writer Amin Maalouf and stage director Peter Sellars.

Through three works by Jimmie LeBlanc focused on the experiential nature of music, Paramirabo offers an immersive and innovative musical experience.
Ice is an audiovisual installation, developed in collaboration with Fareena Chanda (artist) and Stephen Morris (physicist), inspired by the silent formation of icicles, seeking to capture the beauty and violence of the water-to-ice transformation process. The musical composition, led by Cristian Gort (conductor), evolves as the visual textures change, engaging the body and mind in an experience where the seemingly ordinary natural phenomenon is magnified in a haptic manner.
… and the Flesh made Word is a textural exploration where the sonic material is designed in a more tactile than discursive manner, using the formant structures of French vowels as a harmonic model.
Clamors of Being, the second part of the diptych, deepens the writing by closely connecting to matter, considering it as a cosmic movement, personified yet animated by a vital breath.
This encounter promises a unique audiovisual exploration between music, nature, and technology, where inner and outer worlds come together to resonate and vibrate through their collisions.

À travers trois œuvres de Jimmie LeBlanc axées sur le caractère expérientiel de la musique, Paramirabo offre une expérience musicale immersive et novatrice.Ice est une installation au diovisuelle, conçue en collaboration avec Fareena Chanda (artiste) et Stephen Morris (physicien), inspirée par la formation silencieuse des glaçons, cherchant à capturer la beauté et la violence du processus de transformation de l’eau en glace. It’s 1989, and rave culture is at its peak in England. Illegal raves are organized all over the country, in abandoned warehouses and other isolated locations. A cat-and-mouse game is played between organizers and the police: but once a rave has started, the police have no way of stopping it.
This interactive virtual reality experience transports you to the rave scene on a typical night, accompanied by the sound of old-school Acid House. Grab a flyer and set off with your friends in search of an illegal rave, somewhere in a secret location near the city of Coventry. You start by listening to tunes at home, then unearth the dark, empty resting places where isolated phone booths are located to receive information, and finally experience the euphoric release at the party.
This virtual reality experience brings to life the stories of the organizers, DJs, policemen and festival-goers, whose rivalries and relationships made this period of dance culture so unique. You can experience In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats in small groups, in a rave-like environment.
It’s an adventure into one of the most important cultural revolutions in UK history, celebrating multiculturalism and community spirit through the political and societal prism of the late 80s.
Nous sommes en 1989 et la culture rave est à son apogée en Angleterre. Des raves illégaux sont organisés dans tout le pays, dans des entrepôts abandonnés et d’autres lieux isolés. Un jeu du chat et de la souris s’instaure entre les organisateur·trice·s et la police : mais une fois qu’un rave a commencé, la police n’a plus aucun moyen de l’arrêter.
Cette expérience de réalité virtuelle interactive et documentaire vous transporte sur la scène d’un rave au cours d’une nuit typique, accompagnée du son de l’Acid Houseold-school. Prenez un flyer et partez avec vos ami·e·s à la recherche d’un rave illégal, quelque part dans un lieu secret près de la ville de Coventry.
