Francos de Montréal : thaïs à la scène Spotify

Montréalaise née à Paris au milieu des années 90, thaïs est autrice, compositrice, interprète et surtout réalisatrice / productrice (un cas encore trop rare au Québec), façonnant tout de son œuvre. Introvertie de nature, sa musique lui est affranchisseuse, autonomisante : elle avance une pop electro feutrée et pulsatile, délicate et rythmée, menée par sa voix agile. Dévoilée en 2020 via l’EP indépendant Paradis artificiels (notamment propulsé par une synchro dans la télésérie américaine Emily In Paris), elle est repérée par Bravo musique au début 2021 et fait paraître Tout est parfait à l’automne 2022. Ce premier album lui vaudra des nominations au GAMIQ (comme Album pop de l’année) ainsi qu’au prix Félix-Leclerc de la chanson en 2023, en plus de lui permettre de fouler les scènes des Francos de Montréal et du Festival d’été de Québec et d’offrir des prestations en première partie de Cœur de pirate, -M-, Suzane, Ariane Moffatt et Dumas, autant ici qu’en Europe. Elle se déploie encore davantage sur son deuxième album, Personne, paru le 4 avril 2025.

Born in Paris in the mid-1990s and now based in Montréal, thaïs is a singer, songwriter, producer, and—most notably—a rare example of a self-directed and self-produced artist in Québec’s music scene. A natural introvert, she finds liberation and empowerment through music, crafting a muted yet pulsing brand of electro-pop—delicate, rhythmic, and led by her agile voice. Her journey began with the independent EP Paradis artificiels in 2020, which gained traction thanks to a placement in the American TV series Emily in Paris. Discovered by Bravo Musique in early 2021, she released her debut album Tout est parfait in the fall of 2022. The album earned her nominations at the GAMIQ (for Pop Album of the Year) and the Prix Félix-Leclerc de la chanson in 2023, while taking her to major stages including Les Francos de Montréal and Festival d’été de Québec. She also opened for artists like Cœur de pirate, -M-, Suzane, Ariane Moffatt, and Dumas, both in Canada and Europe. With her second album Personne, released on April 4, 2025, thaïs expands her sonic universe even further.

C’est avec le cœur léger et plus de confiance en ses propres moyens que jamais que Stéphanie Boulay remontera sur scène, en solo oui, mais entourée de ses ami.es précieux (Charles Blondeau à la batterie, Camille Gélinas aux claviers et Alexandre Martel à la guitare et à la basse) pour défendre son deuxième album solo, Est-ce que quelqu’un me voit?. Elle a une envie insatiable d’agentivité, de liberté et de tracer son chemin à elle toute seule – quitte à repartir à zéro s’il le faut – pour aller à la rencontre de ce public qui ne la connaît probablement pas encore, ou, du moins, pas comme ça. Habile à créer chaque soir des moments qui n’existaient pas encore et qui n’existeront plus jamais dans la même forme, à faire rire et à se livrer avec autodérision et impudeur, Stéphanie présentera ses chansons toutes neuves, qu’elle a travaillé deux ans durant à extirper d’elle-même, avec l’aide du réalisateur Alexandre Martel. Elles sontcrues, ces chansons, elles sont intimes et franches, mais elles sont aussi libres, baveuses, éclatantes et dansantes.

Vendou est un rappeur originaire de Montréal qui utilise la musique comme exutoire d’une trop grande sensibilité. Son art se veut un échange intime, parfois intense, au cœur de l’esprit.
Récipiendaire du Meilleur EP Hip-Hop (GAMIQ) et de la Bourse Telus en 2020, le demi-finaliste des Francouvertes rend justice à l’attention qu’on lui porte avec la sortie remarquée de son premier album MILLÉNIUM (2021, L’Ours – Label). Acclamé par le public et la critique, cumulant près d’un million d’écoutes à ce jour et fort d’une nomination pour le prix Felix Leclerc de la chanson et d’une mention comme Meilleur album Hip-Hop (GAMIQ), Vendou est propulsé à l’avant plan de la scène musicale émergente.
Loin de s’arrêter là, il met sur pied au printemps 2021, avec l’aide de ses musiciens, un spectacle unique en son genre lui permettant de présenter son univers aux quatre coins du Québec, en passant par la Belgique et le Nouveau-Brunswick.
Gonflé à bloc par la découverte de ces nouveaux horizons, c’est le vent dans les voiles que Vendou prépare la suite. Prévu pour mai 2022, son nouvel EP « V Pour » met en scène la naissance de « Le V », alter-égo auto-destructeur qui fait la lumière sur une facette plus sombre de sa personnalité.

Vendou is a Montreal-based rapper who uses music as an outlet for his deep sensitivity. His art offers an intimate, sometimes intense exchange rooted in the depths of the mind.
Winner of Best Hip-Hop EP (GAMIQ) and the Telus Grant in 2020, this Francouvertes semi-finalist lived up to the growing buzz around him with the release of his acclaimed debut album MILLÉNIUM (2021, L’Ours – Label). Hailed by both the public and critics, the album has garnered nearly one million streams to date and earned him a nomination for the Félix Leclerc Songwriting Prize, as well as a nod for Best Hip-Hop Album (GAMIQ). With this success, Vendou quickly rose to the forefront of Quebec’s emerging music scene.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Vendou put together a one-of-a-kind live show in spring 2021 with the help of his band, allowing him to share his immersive world across Quebec, Belgium, and New Brunswick.
Fueled by these new experiences and inspired by new horizons, Vendou is full speed ahead. His next chapter arrives with the May 2022 release of V Pour, an EP introducing “Le V”—a self-destructive alter ego that sheds light on the darker side of his persona.

Âgé de 28 ans, Carbonne s’est inspiré des rappeurs de son époque, notamment de Diam’s, avec des textes recherchés évoquant la société de son temps. À 13 ans, imprégné de la culture rap et hip hop, il prend l’initiative d’écrire ses premières lignes sur son lit d’enfance. Après avoir complété sa licence en économie à l’université Paul Valéry, le jeune garçon originaire d’Espagne décide de se lancer entièrement dans la musique.
En 2021, il dévoile son premier EP intitulé Aux Aurores, comprenant six titres. Ceci marque le début de sa carrière sur la scène musicale. Puis tout s’enchaîne pour le montpelliérain qui réalise également les premières parties de figures emblématiques du rap français tel que Lorenzo, Youssoupha ou encore Dosseh, tous cumulant le million d’auditeurs par mois sur Spotify.

At 27 years old, Carbonne draws inspiration from the rappers of his generation—most notably Diam’s—crafting thoughtful lyrics that reflect the society of his time. At just 13, immersed in rap and hip-hop culture, he began writing his first lines from the comfort of his childhood bed. After earning a degree in economics from Paul Valéry University, the Spanish-born artist decided to fully dedicate himself to music.
In 2021, he released his debut EP Aux Aurores, a six-track project that marked the beginning of his journey in the music scene. Things quickly took off for the Montpellier-based rapper, who went on to open for major French rap figures such as Lorenzo, Youssoupha, and Dosseh—each boasting over a million monthly listeners on Spotify.

Le projet Bonobo de Simon Green propose une musique électronique éclectique et étonnamment organique, aussi bien adaptée à la danse qu’à la détente. Il débute en 2000 avec Animal Magic, un album downtempo marqué par l’usage de samples poussiéreux. Depuis, son style et son univers se sont considérablement élargis : ses compositions sophistiquées intègrent de plus en plus d’instruments joués en direct et s’inspirent d’un large éventail de genres, du jazz, folk et soul aux musiques africaines, asiatiques et moyen-orientales.
Bien que Green tourne souvent en solo en tant que DJ, il a mis sur pied un ensemble live en 2004, interprétant des versions orchestrées de ses morceaux devant d’immenses foules, incluant des concerts à guichets fermés et des prestations sur les scènes principales de festivals majeurs comme Coachella et Glastonbury. Depuis Black Sands (2010), sa musique s’est orientée vers un son plus club, empruntant notamment aux styles UK garage et house. La popularité de Bonobo n’a cessé de croître, avec Migration (2017) et Fragments (2022), tous deux classés dans le Top 5 des albums au Royaume-Uni. En 2025, il sort son premier album de musique de film, une bande sonore pour la série animée Lazarus.

Simon Green’s Bonobo project offers an eclectic, refreshingly organic form of electronic music fit for both dancing and chilling out. Debuting with the dusty, sample-driven downtempo album Animal Magic in 2000, Green’s sound and scope have since expanded dramatically, with his sophisticated compositions and arrangements incorporating greater use of live instrumentation and encompassing influences ranging from jazz, folk, and soul to African, Asian, and Middle Eastern styles of music.
While Green often tours solo as a DJ, he established a live touring ensemble in 2004, performing highly orchestrated versions of his songs to immense audiences, including several sold-out headlining gigs as well as main stage performances at festivals such as Coachella and Glastonbury. His work since 2010’s Black Sands has become more club-minded, particularly paying mind to styles like U.K. garage and house. Bonobo’s popularity has continued to rise steadily, with the 2017 release Migration and 2022’s Fragments both charting in the Top Five of the U.K. album chart. He issued his first soundtrack album, for the anime series Lazarus, in 2025.

Baignée dans la musique depuis toujours, l’artiste Réunionnaise Sueilo n’a pas fini de faire parler d’elle ! Lorsque, plus jeune, elle intègre l’École de Musique Actuelle (EMA) de La Réunion, elle rencontre celui qui deviendra son complice et guitariste : l’excellent Djoun’s, toujours fidèle et patron du studio Surprise à Saint-Leu. Inspirée par le Groove, notamment la Soul et le Jazz, Sueilo commence par composer en anglais pour finalement retrouver la langue de Molière et le Créole pour donner une dimension plus profonde, enracinée dans ses origines culturelles. Un choix qui la mènera vers un style plus afro-urbain dans lequel elle raconte les nuances de l’amour sous toutes ses formes, incarnant l’indépendance et la puissance féminine.

Immersed in music from an early age, Réunionese artist Sueilo is just getting started. As a young student at the École de Musique Actuelle (EMA) in Réunion, she met her future collaborator and guitarist, the talented Djoun’s—still by her side today and head of the Surprise studio in Saint-Leu. Influenced by groove-driven genres like soul and jazz, Sueilo began writing songs in English before reconnecting with French and Creole, adding a deeper, more culturally rooted dimension to her music. This shift led her toward a more Afro-urban sound, where she explores the many shades of love and boldly embodies independence and feminine strength.

Ensemble Obiora: Sisterhood in music

An all-female, feminist concert and an example of cultural diversity in contemporary music, Ensemble Obiora’s Sororité (Sisterhood) drew a large audience to Salle Pierre-Mercure yesterday afternoon. Led by Janna Sailor, the programme featured the music of Reena Ismaïl, one of the most exciting voices in contemporary music, for a too rare time in Montreal. After a rather academic opening composition (Rachel McFarlane’s When Enchantment Comes, inspired by Oscar Peterson but rather unrepresentative of the pianist’s music), it was the Indo-Western fusion universe of Ismaïl, a composer of Indian origin living in the United States, that provided the most colourful moment of the afternoon. Meri Sakhi ki Avaaz (My Sister’s Voice), for chamber orchestra, soprano and Hindustani singer (the classical vocal style of North India), offered a spellbinding encounter between two very different vocal styles, set against a romantico-impressionist orchestral backdrop (Debussian to be precise, but with evident indian colourings) with no contemporary harmonic asperities, but expertly detailed. The work opens with a tape extract of the famous flower duet from Léo Delibes’s opera Lakmé (set in India), followed by a more ‘authentic’ version of this melody, sung by soloist Anuja Panditrao (excellent). 

Lyric soprano Suzanne Taffot joins in later and the two women talk about friendship and sisterhood in an echo of the more than famous opera aria (so often used in advertisements). The meeting of the two types of singing is very well balanced and skilfully constructed by Ismaïl. The finale even demands a great deal of virtuosity from Taffot, who imitates the virtuosic flights typical of Hindustani singing with great precision. Well done!

The concert’s finale was Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony, a work long neglected but almost on the way to becoming a staple of the repertoire. Sailor’s reading called for great precision, generally offered by Obiora, apart from occasional rhythmic inaccuracies. Above all, the orchestra offered a beautiful, full ensemble sound, transcending its character as a ‘large chamber orchestra’ rather than a true symphony orchestra. 

The Obiora ensemble is proving to be an important addition to the musical landscape of Montreal and Quebec, because if the large, diverse, family-friendly and above all attentive audience is anything to go by, it has succeeded in winning the loyalty of a new audience to whom it introduces a little-known and inspiring repertoire. An EDI success that must be celebrated!
