One hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden est le nom du deuxième album de l’auteur compositrice canadienne Alexandra Levy, connue publiquement sous le nom d’Ada Lea. D’une part, il s’agit d’une collection de chansons pop/folk cathartiques et rythmées, d’autre part, c’est un livre de récits de la vie citadine qui font chavirer le cœur. Ada Lea a poursuivi le travail créatif de chansons indie-rock de son premier album what we say in private avec des arrangements surprenants et de nouvelles perspectives.

One hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden is the name of the second album by Canadian songwriter Alexandra Levy, publicly known by the moniker Ada Lea. On one hand, it’s a collection of walking-paced, cathartic pop/folk songs, on the other it’s a book of heart-twisting, rear-view stories of city life. Ada Lea has followed up the creative, indie-rock songcraft of her debut what we say in private with surprising arrangements and new perspectives.

The Weather Station at The International Jazz Festival

Ignorance, le nouvel album de The Weather Station, commence de manière énigmatique ; un sifflement de hi hat, un battement de tambour bégayant. Une minute entière s’écoule avant l’entrée de la voix de Tamara Lindeman, douce, conversationnelle, qui entonne : « I never believed in the robber ». Une musique en dents de scie se construit, avec des cordes poignardantes, un saxophone et plusieurs couches de percussions, et la chanson ondule pendant cinq minutes de tension croissante, oscillant entre deux accords seulement. Une fois de plus, la compositrice torontoise Tamara Lindeman a refait le son de The Weather Station ; une fois de plus, elle a profité de l’occasion d’un nouveau disque pour créer un nouveau paysage sonore, taillé sur mesure pour exprimer une idée émotionnelle.

Ignorance, the new album by the The Weather Station, begins enigmatically; a hissing hi hat, a stuttering drum beat. A full minute passes before the entry of Tamara Lindeman’s voice, gentle, conversational, intoning; “I never believed in the robber”. A jagged music builds, with stabbing strings, saxophone, and several layers of percussion, and the song undulates through five minutes of growing tension, seesawing between just two chords. Once again, Toronto songwriter Tamara Lindeman has remade what The Weather Station sounds like; once again, she has used the occasion of a new record to create a new sonic landscape, tailor-made to express an emotional idea.

NEA Jazz Master and three-time GRAMMY® award-winning drummer, producer, and educator, Terri Lyne Carrington started her professional career as a “kid wonder” while studying under a full scholarship at Berklee College of Music in Boston. In the mid ’80’s she worked as an in-demand drummer in New York before gaining national recognition on late night TV as the house drummer for both the Arsenio Hall Show and Quincy Jones’ VIBE TV show.

Adjuah est connu pour avoir développé la convention harmonique connue sous le nom de « cellule de prévision » et pour son utilisation d’un ton sans voix dans son interprétation, mettant l’accent sur le souffle plutôt que sur la vibration à l’embouchure. Adjuah est également le géniteur de la « Stretch Music » , une forme musicale sans genre, enracinée dans le jazz, qui tente d’étirer les conventions rythmiques, mélodiques et harmoniques du jazz pour englober de multiples formes, langages et cultures musicales.

Adjuah is known for developing the harmonic convention known as the “forecasting cell” and for his use of an un-voiced tone in his playing, emphasizing breath over vibration at the mouthpiece. Adjuah is also the progenitor of “Stretch Music,” a jazz rooted, genre blind musical form that attempts to “stretch” jazz’s rhythmic, melodic and harmonic conventions to encompass multiple musical forms, languages and cultures.

Half Moon Run à L’Olympia

Il s’agit d’un groupe né pendant la révolution du Mile End: Molander et Dylan Phillips, tous deux originaires de la Colombie-Britannique, s’y sont associés à Devon Portielje, expatrié d’Ottawa, quelques années après qu’Arcade Fire ait placé la métropole sur la carte internationale du « rock indie », et juste avant que le trio s’associe à la même étiquette que Grimes, qui inaugurerait un nouveau chapitre et changeait la tradition pour le « do it yourself » de Montréal. C’est donc pendant ce moment de transition que Half Moon Run a construit un son qui lui est singulier, qui trépasse le passé et de l’avenir de la musique de Montréal, vers un royaume intemporel. Leur genre est celui qui inspire toutes sortes de couleurs, de descriptions contradictoires – musique considérée « folk » pour une ère sombre moderne, « art-rock » pour les amateurs d’harmonies pop, « indie » rustiques pour les têtes néoclassiques – mais peu importe comment vous le définissez, les réactions physiques et émotionnelles des auditeurs sont toujours les mêmes: les battements de cœur s’accélèrent, la chair de poule monte, les orbites se redressent.

When you consider everything the Montreal band have accomplished and achieved and gained and lost in their lifespan, the past decade may as well have been a century. This was a group born between revolutions: B.C natives Molander and Dylan Phillips connected with Ottawa expat Devon Portielje in the Mile End a few years after Arcade Fire had put the city on the international indie-rock map, and just before the trio’s fellow jam-space tenant Grimes would usher in a new chapter of Montreal DIY lore. But in the midst of this transitional moment, Half Moon Run forged a singular sound that looked beyond Montreal’s past and future toward the realm of the timeless. Theirs is a sound that inspires all sorts of colorful, contradictory descriptors—folk music for the modern dark age, art rock for harmony-pop enthusiasts, rustic indie anthems for neoclassical heads—but no matter what you call it, the physical and emotional responses among listeners is always the same: heartbeats accelerate, goosebumps rise, eye sockets well up.
