Christine Jensen Quartet au Dièse Onze

Née à Sechelt, en Colombie-Britannique, Christine Jensen a grandi à Nanaimo, parmi des musiciens canadiens très connus : Phil Dwyer, Diana Krall, guitariste de blues, David Gogo et sa sœur Ingrid. La collection de disques de sa mère et l’influence de ses professeurs la font pencher pour le jazz. Son premier amour était le piano ; son style fut influencé par de grandes vedettes de jazz comme Oscar Peterson et Bill Evans.

Pendant ces dernières années, Jensen a fait le parcours de la scène jazz canadienne et internationale. Elle fait connaître sa musique aux spectateurs du Pérou, de l’Argentine, du Chili, du Danemark, du Mexique, de la Suède, de la Turquie, et aussi de Haïti. En 2007, elle a joué avec son quartette chez Dizzy’s Club au Centre Lincoln à New York ainsi qu’au Festival « Discover Jazz » à Burlington. Elle fait des apparitions partout au Canada et elle enregistre fréquemment des projets et des concerts pour CBC et sa musique est diffusée sur les ondes d’Espace-Musique à Radio-Canada.

Christine Jensen was born in Sechelt, British Columbia, in 1970, growing up in Nanaimo among some of Canada’s finest musicians, including Phil Dwyer, Diana Krall, blues guitarist, David Gogo, and her sister Ingrid. Her pianist/mother raised her daughters on music, exposing them to everything from Chopin to Broadway to Big Bands. Jensen’s first love was the piano, developing an individual style influenced by great jazz musicians such as Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans.

The past few years have kept Jensen busy on the international stage, taking her music to India, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Denmark, Mexico, Sweden, Turkey, and Haiti. In 2007, she performed with her quartet at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, as well as at Burlington’s “Discover Jazz” Festival. Jensen is frequently heard across the country live in concert on CBC radio and Radio-Canada’s
Espace-Musique.

Trios by Amy Beach and Rebecca Clarke

La pianiste et compositrice américaine Amy Beach a écrit son Trio avec piano en 1938, au crépuscule d’une longue carrière prolifique, commencée dès l’âge de quatre ans. L’œuvre témoigne de ses différentes influences, allant du romantisme au modernisme français, en passant par le folklore. Quant au Trio de l’altiste et compositrice Rebecca Clarke, il date de 1921, dans les derniers milles de la tonalité, et fait preuve d’une grande vitalité mêlée au drame de la guerre qui venait de prendre fin. Les deux œuvres, écrites en Nouvelle-Angleterre, explorent avec brio les possibilités des trois instruments solistes.

American pianist and composer Amy Beach wrote her Piano Trio in 1938, in the twilight years of a long and prolific career that began at the age of four. The work shows her various influences, from Romanticism to French modernism, and incorporating folklore. Violist and composer Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio is dated 1921, coinciding with the last moments of tonality and exhibiting great vitality mixed with the drama of wartime that had just come to an end.These two works, both written in New England, brilliantly explore the possibilities of their three solo instruments.

Mike Gauthier Trio au Dièse Onze – Lancement d’album

L’approche expressive du guitariste Michael Gauthier est conforme à la philosophie de Aaron Copland: «La musique doit être aussi simple que possible mais pas plus simple». Improvisateur autodidacte, les prouesses de Gauthier comme artiste lui ont permis de jouer auprès de nombreux musiciens de renom international. Son style musical évoque la voix humaine et est influencé par les guitaristes Kenny Burrell, Grant Green et Robert Johnson, et par les chanteurs Ray Charles et Jimi Hendrix. Ses compositions incorporent des rythmes dansants, des conversations lyriques et une touche de blues.

Michael Gauthier’s soulful approach to the jazz guitar follows Aaron Copland’s philosophy: «Music should be as simple as possible but no simpler.» A self-taught improviser, Gauthier’s prowess as a performer has placed him on stage with numerous internationally known jazz stars. His playing style evokes the human voice and is influenced by guitarists Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, and Robert Johnson, and singers Ray Charles and Jimi Hendrix. His compositions incorporate dancing rhythms, lyrical conversations and a touch of blues.

OMBIIGIZI – prononcé om-BEE-ga-ZAY, ce qui signifie “c’est bruyant” – est une collaboration entre Zoon (Daniel Monkman) et Status/Non Status (Adam Sturgeon), des artistes Anishnaabe qui explorent leurs histoires culturelles à travers le son. Leur musique commune est une rumination sur la famille, une célébration et un nettoyage holistique, avec un fort sentiment d’unité et de soutien affectueux. Amalgame de leurs héritages indigènes et de leurs architectures musicales personnelles, Daniel et Adam imprègnent leurs textes des récits de leurs familles, révélant des vérités et trouvant un terrain d’entente au milieu de leurs différences.

OMBIIGIZI – pronounced om-BEE-ga-ZAY, meaning this is noisy – is a collaboration between Zoon (Daniel Monkman) and Status/Non Status (Adam Sturgeon), Anishnaabe artists who explore their cultural histories through sound. Moktar Gania & Gnawa Soul au Club Balattou

En digne héritier de la dynastie Gania qui a tant compté dans la culture du Maroc, Maâlem Moktar Gania d’Essaouira s’impose aujourd’hui comme un acteur essentiel de la musique Gnaoua.

Initié par ces piliers de la tradition Gnaouie que furent son père Boubker et son frère Mahmoud, le jeune Moktar s ‘est produit dans le monde entier avec la famille Gania, mais ensuite aussi avec Randy Weston, Bill Laswell, Pharoah Sanders, Carlos Santana et bien d’autres …

La rencontre entre le Maâlem Moktar Gania (frère cadet de l’incontournable et regretté maître Mahmoud Gania) et le groupe Gnawa Soul a permis de créer à Essaouira un style novateur à la frontière de l’esprit Gnawa, des grandes mélodies orientales du Maghreb et des vibrations de la culture Ouest Africaine.

Moktar Gania et Gnawa Soul apparaissent comme les nouveaux ambassadeurs d’une musique reliant le Maghreb et l’Afrique de l’Ouest célébrant les noces du corps et de l’esprit qui délivrent l’âme, que ce soient à travers des balades dédiées à l’élémentaire cosmique ou des titres rythmiques issus de la transe spirituelle.
Leur album GNAWA SOUL est sorti en mai 2022 sous l’étiquette Disques Nuits d’Afrique, en collaboration avec Nomad Roots.

Musical landscapes : Barber’s Adagio and Jeanine de Bique

Originaire de Trinidad et Tobago, la soprano Jeanine De Bique poursuit une carrière opératique internationale couronnée de nombreuses distinctions. Elle fera ses débuts à l’OSM dans la rhapsodie lyrique de Samuel Barber intitulée Knoxville: Summer of 1915, qui relate une soirée en famille dans la petite ville du Tennessee.Également au programme, le vibrant Adagio pour cordes de Barber ainsi que des œuvres de la compositrice canadienne Jean Coulthard et du compositeur vénézuélien Inocente Carreño. Ces pièces sont liées par la notion de territoire : lieu de naissance et lieu de vie, il influence le parcours des artistes.

Hailing from Trinidad and Tobago, soprano Jeanine De Bique leads an international operatic career and has garnered numerous distinctions. She makes her OSM debut in Samuel Barber’s operatic rhapsody Knoxville: Summer of 1915, which recounts a family’s evening together in a small Tennessee town. Also on the program are Barber’s deeply moving Adagio for Strings as well as works by Canadian composer Jean Coulthard and Venezuelan composer Inocente Carreño. The works featured are all connected through the concept of landscapes, places of birth and of dwelling, and of influence on the artist’s path.

Four Musicians by Ensemble Obiora

Quatre musiciens de l’ensemble Obiora, dont la mission consiste à mieux représenter la diversité culturelle en musique classique, proposent un concert tout américain. Après la délicate et colorée Lullaby de Gershwin, le quatuor interprétera une œuvre de Florence Price, la première Afro-américaine à avoir été jouée par un orchestre majeur américain. Enfin le public entendra l’opus 11 de Barber, duquel est tiré son fameux Adagio pour cordes.

Four musicians from the Ensemble Obiora, whose mission is to promote musicians from different cultural backgrounds in order to increase their representation on the classical music scene, will give an all-American concert. Gershwin’s delicate and richly hued Lullaby will be followed by a performance of a work by Florence Price, the first black American composer to be played by a major American orchestra. This quartet will then perform Barber’s op. 11, from which the composer’s famous Adagio for Strings originates.

Chopin in America with Sergio Tiempo

This performer, who rose to prominence at age 14 after giving a concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, will illustrate the breadth of his energy and talent in his interpretation of Moleiro’s Joropo, Copland’s blues and Chopin’s lyricism, performing the latter composer’s monumental Piano Sonata no. 3, a work virtually in a class of its own in the repertoire for piano.

James Ehnes and Korngold’s Violin Concerto

Erich Korngold est l’un des derniers représentants de l’école romantique viennoise. Exilé aux États-Unis après avoir fui le nazisme, il compose entre 1937 et 1945 un Concerto pour violon d’un souffle lyrique intense. Le violoniste James Ehnes se joindra à l’OSM et Rafael Payare dans un concert passionné qui débutera avec l’une des plus belles pages de Wagner : Siegfried-Idyll.

Erich Korngold is one of the last proponents of the school of Viennese Romanticism. In exile in the United States after fleeing Nazism, he composed this sweepingly lyrical Violin Concerto between 1937 and 1945. Violinist James Ehnes will join the OSM and Rafael Payare in an impassioned concert that opens with one of Wagner’s most exquisite works: Siegried-Idyll.

Saxophone Quintets with Steven Banks

Entouré de musiciens de l’OSM et de lauréats du Concours OSM, Banks offrira ainsi une rare occasion d’entendre des œuvres d’Adolf Busch et d’Ellen Taafe Zwilich, en plus du Quarteto simbólico de Villa-Lobos, à l’instrumentation audacieuse. Le tableau sera complété par des pièces de Debussy, dont les évocatrices Danse sacrée et danse profane.

The outstanding American saxophonist Steven Banks makes his OSM debut in a concert demonstrating the variety of ways his instrument is employed in the chamber music repertoire. Joined by OSM musicians and OSM Competition winners, Banks offers a rare opportunity to hear works by Adolf Busch and Ellen Taafe Zwilich, as well as the audaciously scored Quarteto simbólico by Villa-Lobos. This musical tableau will be completed by pieces by Debussy, including the evocative Danse sacrée et danse profane.
