Depuis son arrivée à New York, il est devenu bien connu sur la scène du jazz moderne de New York, récoltant des critiques nationales et prêtant ses talents de pianiste et de compositeur à des artistes aussi remarquables qu’Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, Jeff ” Tain” Watts, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Joel Frahm, Yosvany Terry parmi tant d’autres. Valera est également le leader du groupe Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, un projet profondément influencé par les expériences d’artistes cubains des années 70 et 80. Inspiré par Irakere, Emiliano Salvador et AfroCuba, ce groupe en tournée crée un style unique et distinctif qui mélange des éléments de jazz, de R&B, de fusion et de funk avec des styles de musique cubains. Based in New York City, Grammy nominated artist, pianist and composer Manuel Valera was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. Since arriving in NYC, he has become well known in the NYC modern jazz scene, garnering national reviews and lending his talents as a pianist and composer to such notable artist as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D’Rivera, Brian Lynch, Dafnis Prieto, Jeff “Tain” Watts, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Joel Frahm, Yosvany Terry among many others. Valera is also the leader of his working band Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, a project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s. While inspired by artists Irakere, Emiliano Salvador and AfroCuba, this touring band creates a unique and distinctive style that mixes elements of Jazz, R&B, fusion and funk with Cuban music styles. Expectativas (MAVO 2013) is the follow up and seventh recording as a leader to his 2013 Grammy nominated New Cuban Express (MAVO 2012) which was up for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year.

Kind est accompagné de 6 des meilleurs musiciens de la relève à Montréal afin d’offrir au public une expérience qui lui permettra de voyager dans son univers et d’oublier ses soucis le temps du spectacle. Un public attentif saura trouver dans les textes de Kind de nombreux outils utiles afin de mieux gérer les douleurs physiques et mentales, les situations difficiles, et vivre de façon plus consciente.

Kind is an artist that sings and writes about health, healing, nature, spirituality, human struggles, and the science of classical Yoga in an effort to raise human consciousness and alleviate suffering. He finds his inspiration in a wide range of bands and blends styles to create a new kind of meditative-pop-reggae that will make both youth and elders vibe to the rhythm and reflect on the lyrics. Some artists that have inspired him a lot are Vaughn Benjamin (Midnite, Akae Beka), Bob Marley and The Wailers, Pressure Busspipe, Jah9, Paul McCartney, and Chronixx.

Kind will be accompanied by 6 of the most skillful musicians in Montréal to offer the crowd an experience that will carry them into his world, make them forget about their worries for the time of the show, and give them cues to live a more joyful, conscious life.

David Celia & Zuffalo à la Casa Del Popolo

David est un auteur-compositeur-interprète innovant et un guitariste étonnant, connu pour ses performances live spontanées. Ses chansons ont un style alt/folk ouvert qui a également été décrit comme “Beatlesque”.

Zuffalo s’est formé à partir d’un amour partagé pour des groupes tels que les Beatles, Grateful Dead et James Brown. Une nuit à Toronto en 2016, Mikey et Kim ont recruté Sean pour jouer de la guitare et créer leur propre mélange de musique avec ces héros en tête ; rencontrant plus tard Eric qui les a rejoints en 2019. Avec un intérêt mutuel pour l’improvisation, stimulé par la formation en jazz de tous les membres du groupe et la formation en musicothérapie de Kim, les joueurs de Zuffalo aiment tisser des notes et des rythmes les uns autour des autres et peindre de nouvelles idées musicales à la volée.

David is an innovative singer/songwriter and astonishing guitar player, known for his spontaneously driven live performances. His songs have an open alt/folk style that’s also been described as “Beatlesque”.

Zuffalo was formed out of a shared love for bands such as the Beatles, Grateful Dead and James Brown. One night in Toronto in 2016, Mikey and Kim recruited Sean to play guitar and create their own blend of music with these heroes in mind; later meeting Eric who joined in 2019. With a mutual interest in improvisation, boosted by the jazz training of all band members and Kim’s music therapy background, the Zuffalo players love to weave notes and beats around each other and paint new musical ideas on the fly.

Soledad : Tribute to Piazzolla

Bandonéoniste virtuose considéré comme le plus grand compositeur de tango du XX^e siècle, Astor Piazzolla sera à l’honneur lors de ce concert aux forts effluves argentins. Pour donner vie au répertoire de cette légende musicale, l’OSM a réuni une formation à l’image de celle que privilégiait Piazzolla, soit le piano, le bandonéon, le violon la guitare et la contrebasse. Dans ce concert qui témoignera de l’importance de la musique baroque dans l’œuvre du maître argentin, le public sera enhardi par la présence de deux danseurs, dont les pas sont inextricablement liés aux airs de tango.

A virtuoso bandoneon player regarded as the greatest tango composer of the 20th century, Astor Piazzolla is celebrated in this strongly accented Argentinian concert. To bring the repertoire of this musical legend to life, the OSM will assemble a group of musicians reflecting Piazolla’s favoured ensemble: piano, bandoneon, violin, guitar, and double bass. In this concert highlighting the importance of Baroque music in the works of this Argentinian master, audiences will also be conquered by the panache of two dancers whose steps are inextricably bound to the tango melodies being performed.

Americans in Paris, Cairo and Quebec City

Le flûtiste Arin Sarkissian remportait le Concours OSM 2020 à 21 ans, l’âge qu’avait Mozart lorsqu’il composa son Premier quatuor avec flûte : un petit bijou de style galant. Mais avant, le public aura la chance de découvrir deux œuvres pour cordes, incluant un trio de l’Américain et missionnaire en Égypte John Antes, écrit vers 1780 alors que ce dernier récupérait après avoir été capturé, puis relâché par des disciples ottomans. La pièce de Jean-Pierre Guignon, quant à elle, donne à entendre une version virtuose pour deux violons du célèbre air des Sauvages de Jean-Philippe Rameau (titre de 1727), immortalisé son l’opéra Les Indes galantes.

Flutist Arin Sarkissian won the OSM Competition in 2020 at the age of 21 – Mozart was the same age when he composed his Flute Quartet no. 1, a gem of the style galant. Preceding this work, audience members will have the chance to discover two pieces for strings, including a Trio by American composer and missionary in Egypt John Antes, written around 1780 while he was recovering after being captured, then released by Ottoman adherents. The piece by Jean-Pierre Guignon, meanwhile, features a masterful version for two violins of the famous tune from Les Sauvages by Jean-Philippe Rameau (titled in 1727), immortalized in his opera Les Indes galantes.

Il sera question d’amour, de rapport entre l’être et le territoire, de fertilité et de sensualité. Les textes de Marie-Andrée Gill (innue), Leanne Simpson (anishnaabe), Virginia Bordeleau (crie et métisse), Jean Sioui (wendat) et Katarina Vermette (métisse) côtoieront la musique de Vaughan Williams, Piazzolla, Ravel, ainsi que du compositeur canadien d’origine crie Andrew Balfour.

Through their written works, the authors featured in this concert offer a window onto their perceptions of the world, which are intimately bound up with nature. They discuss love, the relationship between living beings and the land, fertility, and sensuality. Texts by Marie-Andrée Gill (Innu), Leanne Simpson (Anishinaabe), Virginia Bordeleau (Cree and Métis), Jean Sioui (Wendat) and Katarina Vermette (Métis) will converge with music by Vaughan Williams, Piazzolla, Ravel, and by the Canadian composer of Cree ancestry Andrew Balfour.

Jeff Johnson Trio at the Upstairs Jazz

Actif sur la scène musicale depuis plus de vingt ans, Johnston a joué et enregistré avec plusieurs des meilleurs au monde, dont John Abercrombie, Don Alias, Shirley Eikhard, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Liebman, Archie Shepp, Sonny Greenwich et Slide Hampton. Sa musique a été décrite par les critiques comme « exceptionnelle à tous points de vue » et « le jazz canadien à son meilleur » (Globe and Mail). Il s’est produit abondamment en Amérique du Nord et en Europe, notamment au Festival de jazz d’Antibes en France, au Festival de jazz d’Ombrie en Italie et régulièrement au Festival international de jazz de Montréal.

Active on the music scene for over twenty years, Johnston has performed and recorded with many of the worlds best, including John Abercrombie, Don Alias, Shirley Jeff Johnston is a Canadian based jazz pianist, film composer, and educator. His works are infused with alluring harmonies, lush textures, rhythmic inventiveness and spontaneity. Chuck Berg of Jazz Times Magazine wrote “This is music, that while at the contemporary cutting edge, is both immediately and immensely satisfying.” Johnston’s trio and quartet recordings established him as one of the country’s most respected pianists and composers, leading the Toronto Star’s Geoff Chapman to deem Johnston as “clearly in Canada’s top ranks” and the Globe and Mail’s Mark Miller to say ” This is Canadian jazz at it’s best”.

Concert with Chaplin and Keaton

L’OSM présente deux monuments du cinéma muet : Charlie Chaplin et Buster Keaton. Retrouvez leur humour indémodable dans Charlot fait du ciné (1916) et Malec forgeron (1922), deux comédies burlesques où le protagoniste enchaîne les bévues autant que les bons coups. Lors de cette soirée sans pareille, les projections seront accompagnées en direct par trois improvisateurs chevronnés : le clarinettiste André Moisan, le percussionniste Michel Berthiaume et l’organiste Jean-Willy Kunz. Qui sait l’allure que prendra ce ciné-concert!

The OSM presents two monumental figures of the silent film: Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. Enjoy their timeless humour in Behind the Screen (1916) and The Blacksmith (1922), both slapstick comedies in which the protagonists display a series of blunders and right moves. For this highly unique evening, screenings will be enhanced with live accompaniment by three seasoned improvisers: clarinetist André Moisan, percussionist Michel Berthiaume and organist Jean-Willy Kunz. There’s no telling what this cinematic concert has in store for us!
