PAN M 360 at Nuits d’Afrique | Youba Adjrad, Algeria’s Great Pop Voice

If fans of raï, chaâbi, Arabo-Andalusian or even salsa, tarab and Amazigh culture (indigenous to the Maghreb) knew about the immense voice of Algerian singer Youba Adjrad, Fairmount would have been shaken. Such power singers are few and far between.

Youba Adjrad was born in Algeria in 1991, took his first steps in music at the age of 14, studied music at the age of 17, and was inspired by his chaâbi-singing father to enroll in a classical music school in 2009. On Algerian radio, Youba improvises a few Algerian chaâbi classics and even a song of his own. In 2012, at the age of 21, he took part in the national Alhan Wa Chabab (Algerian Super Star) competition, then reached the final of Arabe Idol (season 4). Some consider him to be one of the best Arab voices of the current period. The thirty-something certainly comes from pop and reality TV, but he frees himself from it and distinguishes himself from it.

Believe me, this is no show-off. I was there for the first set on Friday night and wow, what a voice! The groove is purely Maghrebian but also Afro-Latin, the result of Youba Adjrad’s encounter with percussionist Youcef Grim. Montreal musicians Bertil Schulrabe, Carlo Berri, Rafik Abdeladim and Ryan Kaouene are also mentioned as having taken part in the project.

The few dozen people on hand were very happy to be there, despite the low attendance for an artist of this calibre. Next time, we predict, it will be very different.

Octave One at Fairmount

One of the more anachronistic teams in the Detroit techno underground, Octave One’s rough-and-tumble production values gel with most Motor City crews. However, for the Burden brothers — Lawrence and Lenny, joined on and off by Lynell, Lorne, and Lance — the focus is completely on music with little political or social aesthetics behind their tracks. Lawrence Burden began DJ’ing in 1987 in a collective named VLE Nu AGE, then recorded a single in 1989 with the help of Lenny and Lynell plus Anthony Shakir, Jay Denham, and Juan Atkins.

L’une des équipes les plus anachroniques de l’underground techno de Détroit, Octave One a des valeurs de production brutes et irrégulières qui s’accordent avec la plupart des équipes de Motor City. Lorraine Klaasen, daughter of legendary South African jazz singer Thandie Klaasen, is one of the few South African artists to have preserved the classic sound of township music, which remains the most distinctive sound to emerge from South Africa. Born and raised in Soweto, Lorraine has electrified audiences around the world with her dynamic stage presence and showwoman skills. Lorraine was influenced by the giants of South African music in the 1950s and 1960s, such as Miriam Makeba (who was a close friend of Lorraine and Thandie), as well as Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Masuka, Sophie Mgcina and Busi Mhlongo, who frequented her mother’s home. Baptized “The Queen” of the Nuits d’Afrique International Festival, Lorraine Klaasen will be back to celebrate her 40-year career.

Born in November 1971 in Tehran, Iran, Namito grew up in a tranquil middle class family in the Northern part of the city. After witnessing the bloody revolution and a notorious war in Iran his parents decided to send him to West Germany for a better future.

In West-Berlin Namito visited the school where he quickly learned German and adopted to the new environment. His enthusiasm for the art of djing was so strong that he dropped out of school and in 1989 started a career persisting now over three decades.

Né en novembre 1971 à Téhéran, en Iran, Namito a grandi dans une famille tranquille de la classe moyenne dans le nord de la ville. Après avoir assisté à la révolution sanglante et à une guerre notoire en Iran, ses parents ont décidé de l’envoyer en Allemagne de l’Ouest pour lui offrir un avenir meilleur.

À Berlin-Ouest, Namito s’est rendu à l’école où il a rapidement appris l’allemand et s’est adapté à son nouvel environnement. Son enthousiasme pour l’art du djing était si fort qu’il a abandonné l’école et a commencé en 1989 une carrière qui dure maintenant depuis plus de trois décennies.
