En tant qu’artiste solo et en tant que moitié du duo Essaie Pas, la musicienne montréalaise Marie Davidson crée une cold wave hypnotique et minimaliste à l’aide de synthétiseurs analogiques et de boîtes à rythmes, mettant en avant des paroles à la fois intimes et détachées, plus souvent parlées que chantées. Faisant ses débuts en solo avec un EP éponyme brumeux et lo-fi en 2012, sa musique est devenue nettement plus dansante sur Adieux au Dancefloor (2016), tout en conservant une atmosphère sombre et chargée de suspense. Après deux albums acclamés d’Essaie Pas chez DFA, Davidson a sorti en 2018 Working Class Woman, un album solo très introspectif publié par Ninja Tune. Ce disque a connu un succès en club, mais elle a abandonné la musique de danse avec Renegade Breakdown (2020), son premier projet avec son groupe L’Œil Nu.
As a solo artist and as one half of Essaie Pas, Montreal-based musician Marie Davidson creates cold, hypnotic minimal wave with analog synthesizers and drum machines, showcasing her intimate yet detached lyrics that are more often spoken than sung. Making her solo debut with a hazy, lo-fi self-titled EP in 2012, her music became significantly more danceable on 2016’s Adieux au Dancefloor, while still maintaining a dark, suspenseful atmosphere. Following two well-received Essaie Pas albums for DFA, Davidson’s highly introspective solo album Working Class Woman was released by Ninja Tune in 2018. The record became a club success, but she abandoned dance music with 2020’s Renegade Breakdown, the first release with her band L’Œil Nu.

Créé par l’équipe de Music Is My Sanctuary, ce marathon musical de 24h non-stop rassemble des DJs ne jouant pour l’occasion que des disques vinyles. Ne se limitant à aucun style, 17 DJs curatés par des crews incontournables en ville viendront jouer leurs meilleures sélections, allant du jazz au hip-hop, en passant par la disco et la musique électronique.
The world’s first musical marathon dedicated to vinyl culture and DJing is back at SAT for its annual edition on the first weekend of march! Created by the Music Is My Sanctuary team, this 24-hour non-stop music marathon brings together DJs playing only vinyl records for the occasion. Not limiting themselves to any particular style, 17 DJs curated by some of the city’s best crews will play their best selections, ranging from jazz to hip-hop, disco and electronic music.
Issu d’une collaboration éclatée entre l’ensemble vocal Phth et l’artiste visuelle Beth Frey, ce spectacle met en lumière les cinq chanteurs et leurs costumes, métamorphosés et fusionnés grâce à un montage numérique captivant. ¡Némangerie mâchée! fait défiler sur vidéo une ribambelle de personnages étranges, mis en son par une performance vocale dans l’espace. La signature stylistique de Phth est, tout comme l’art visuel de Beth Frey, pleine d’humour et de surprises. La nature informe et chromatique des créatures de Beth partage des échos conceptuels et sensoriels frappants avec leur mise en voix bizarroïde par Phth, connus pour leur palette sonore qui accueille la beauté et la laideur organiques du son sans discrimination. Chaque vocaliste de l’ensemble Phth est compositeur·trice et improvisateur·trice; le processus créatif pour cette œuvre est un hybride de co-création collective, d’improvisation vocale et de partition visuelle à partir des images vidéo. Les outils artistiques de Beth Frey englobent le dessin à l’aquarelle, l’art vidéo, l’égo-portrait, le détournement d’applications mobiles et une utilisation créative de l’intelligence artificielle. Les corps et mouvements des membres de Phth ont servi à construire les êtres morphologiquement ambigus de cette mascarade, qui semblent suspendus entre le plaisir et l’inquiétude, le précieux et le grotesque. Un spectacle baroque, exubérant et résolument moderne qui promet de brouiller les frontières entre réalité et imaginaire.
The result of an explosive collaboration between vocal ensemble Phth and visual artist Beth Frey, this show highlights the five singers and their costumes, metamorphosed and fused through captivating digital editing. ¡Némangerie mâchée! features a parade of strange characters on video, set to sound by a vocal performance in space. Phth’s signature style, like Beth Frey’s visual art, is rife with humour and surprises. The formless, chromatic nature of Beth’s creatures share striking conceptual and sensory echoes with their bizarre voicing by Phth, known for their sonic palette that welcomes both the organic beauty and ugliness of sound without discrimination. Each vocalist in the Phth ensemble is a composer and improviser; the creative process for this work is a hybrid of collective co-creation, vocal improvisation and visual scoring using video images. Beth Frey’s artistic tools include watercolour drawing, video art, self-portraiture, hijacking of mobile applications and creative use of artificial intelligence. The bodies and movements of the Phth have been used to construct the morphologically ambiguous beings of this menagerie, who seems suspended between pleasure and anxiety, the precious and grotesque. A baroque, exuberant and resolutely modern show that promises to efface the boundaries between reality and imagination.
Festival du Monde Arabe 2024 | Sainte Marine: a character and a opera between two worlds

Saturday 9 November saw the premiere of Sainte Marine, an opera by Katia Makdissi-Warren (of the OktoEcho ensemble), with the support of Chants Libres, opera company directed by Marie-Annick Béliveau.

The opera is described as immersive, which is apt given that the audience and the artists are dispersed in the same spheric shared space: the dome of the SAT (Société des Arts Technologiques) in Montreal. What’s more, the artists move through the audience, who are free (sometimes forced) to change places, sit or stand, depending on their interest in one musician rather than another. The dome itself serves as a screen for various projections during the show. Some are pretty (drawings of flowers, plants, trees), others touching (candles accompanying an introspective musical passage towards the end of the work), but too often they are limited to spurts of coloured lines or sketched shapes that seem to severely under-use the modern potential of digital visual art.
The music evokes traditional Maronite songs from Lebanon (think Sister Marie Keyrouz), as Sainte Marine lived in what is now Lebanon around the 5th century. The vocal score evolves with simple and above all modal lines carried by the amplified voices of Marie-Annick Béliveau, a mezzo-soprano who is sometimes asked to deviate considerably in addition to singing and narrating, and a trio of male bass voices, Sainte Marine’s ‘brothers’ in the monastery (she was a women posing as a male monk all her life). What we hear is mostly ritual or incantatory chant, virtually devoid of any harmonisation, except for some polyphonic writing for the trio of male voices. The effect is certainly sometimes trance-like, but above all emotionally stunted. There were a few times when I thought I would have liked a fuller drama.
The instrumental score is the one that spans the widest range of styles and effects. I particularly liked the flutes proposed by the composer: the classical traverso and alto played by Marie-Hélène Breault, and above all the traditional iranian nay superbly played by Aymen Trabulsi. They are the anchor in this distant world of the Levant, both culturally and temporally. Then the percussions (very good Bertil Schulrabe) and piano (Pamela Reimer) disguise the cultural authenticity initially sketched out with interventions that are sometimes contemporary, elsewhere jazz or slightly pop. All the stylistic personalities described so far occasionally overlap, but more often than not come together in a grouping for which I hesitate between the qualifiers of curious or happy. It’s a bit like tasting a dish that I like, but wonder what’s missing to make it really tasty.
The quality of the performers is undeniable, even if I felt Marie-Annick’s voice was a little fragile, even hesitant, in a few passages. Perhaps this was intentional, to better embody the character? Once again, I hesitate.
Sainte Marine is a very interesting proposition, but it will need some aesthetic refinement and tighter dramatic writing (both musically and on stage), and then some je-ne-sais-quoi still to be determined, to enable it to reach its full potential.
