A prince charged with freeing a princess imprisoned by a false tyrant; an evil queen of unsettling beauty; a jester bird-catcher with a big heart and a magic flute to vanquish evil: this is neither a fairy tale by Perrault nor a legend by the Brothers Grimm, but one of the most fascinating operas in the history of music, Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Blending enchantment, esotericism and comical situations, this work was considered a marvel in Germany from the moment of its premiere in 1791. And what about Mozart’s incredible music? The best way to discover it is in the company of the Atelier d’Opéra and the Orchestre de l’UdeM, conducted by Jean-François Rivest and directed by Patrick R. Lacharité.
As for the fantastical nature of the opera, it will allow students∙es in composition and sound creation to give free rein to their imagination to create an original scenography designed using video mapping and light installations.

2nd prize in the OUM 2023 concerto competition
Whether they are composers, conductors, soloists or instrumentalists with the OUM, students from the Faculty of Music will be in the spotlight during this Rising Stars evening! Discover previously unpublished works by the winners of the OUM 2023 Composition Competition, testifying to the creative vitality of the Faculty. Pianist Fiona Wu will be in the spotlight with Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto, a masterpiece of piano literature in which the soloist opens the dialogue. The flute takes center stage in Gougeon’s Conversations for flute and orchestra, in which Catherine Chabot brings out the full expressive and technical potential of the solo instrument.
Qu’ils exercent leur talent en composition, en direction d’orchestre, comme solistes ou instrumentistes au sein l’OUM, les étudiants et les étudiantes de la Faculté de musique seront sous les feux de la rampe lors de cette soirée Étoiles montantes! Découvrez des œuvres inédites des lauréats du Concours de composition de l’OUM 2023, témoignant de la vitalité créatrice de la Faculté. La pianiste Fiona Wu sera à l’honneur avec le Quatrième concerto de Beethoven, chef-d’œuvre de la littérature pianistique lors duquel le soliste ouvre le dialogue. La part belle sera donnée à la flûte dans l’œuvre de Gougeon, Conversations pour flûte et orchestre, qui permettra à Catherine Chabot de mettre en valeur tout le potentiel expressif et technique de l’instrument soliste.

Experimental evenings to discover the best in digital creation at the Faculty of Music!
Presented in December and April, the Ultrasound series is devoted to acousmatic and visual music, digital art, performance and algorithms. Under a dome of loudspeakers and in an immersive environment, you’ll be immersed in the fascinating worlds of students from the Faculty’s various composition and sound creation programs.
A real springboard, the Ultrasound evenings are the ideal opportunity to let yourself be surprised and to applaud the original creations of the next generation of multimedia artists.

Présentées en décembre et en avril, les séries Ultrasons sont consacrées aux musiques acousmatiques et visuelles, à l’art numérique, aux performances et à l’algorithmie. Sous un dôme de haut-parleurs et dans un environnement immersif, vous serez plongé dans les univers fascinants des étudiantes et étudiants issus des différents programmes de composition et création sonore offerts à la Faculté.

In this concert with a South American flavour, two internationally renowned artists, Brazilian singer Catina DeLuna and Venezuelan pianist Otmaro Ruíz, will join the young virtuoso instrumentalists of the UdeM Big Band. Catina DeLuna is renowned for her rich, colorful voice, with its nostalgic charm. An eclectic musician, Otmaro Ruíz has performed all over the world, approaching rock, fusion, jazz and Latin music with equal pleasure. An evening not to be missed!
The Faculty of Music is supported by the Sophie Desmarais Fund for the Université de Montréal Big Band.
During their stay at the Faculty of Music, Catina DeLuna and Otmaro Ruiz will offer a free public masterclass together on Wednesday, November 29, 4 p.m., in Salle Claude-Champagne.
Vibrations! Festival
From November 23 to December 2, the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music presents the 3rd edition of its annual festival. 7 major events will showcase the talent of the Faculty’s students, faculty and ensembles in residence. Through a rich and diversified program, different musical disciplines meet at the Faculty, Salle Bourgie, Livart and Club Soda.

Lors de ce concert aux accents sud-américains, deux artistes de réputation internationale, la chanteuse brésilienne Catina DeLuna et le pianiste vénézuélien Otmaro Ruíz, se joindront aux jeunes instrumentistes virtuoses du Big Band de l’UdeM. Catina DeLuna est reconnue pour sa voix riche et colorée, dont le charme possède une touche de nostalgie. Musicien éclectique, Otmaro Ruíz s’est produit à travers le monde, abordant le rock, la fusion, le jazz et la musique latine avec un égal bonheur. Une soirée à ne pas manquer!
La Faculté de musique bénéficie du soutien du fonds Sophie Desmarais pour le Big Band de l’Université de Montréal.
Durant leur séjour à la Faculté de musique, Catina DeLuna et Otmaro Ruiz offriront ensemble un cours de maître public gratuit le mercredi 29 novembre 16 h, à la salle Claude-Champagne.
