Yseult Kicks Off Her Mental Tour in Montreal

It was to a packed house that singer Yseult appeared at MTelus on Monday evening. No sooner had the lights gone down than the room began to go wild. In the distance, a voice could be heard counting down in English, promising an intriguing staging.

She is accompanied by her two American musicians, on guitar and drums, whom she teases and imitates the accent at times during the show. Dressed in military pants, white gloves with “Mental Tour” written on them, necklaces around her neck and belts around her waist.

The French singer from Cameroon opens the show with Noir, and seems to be having the time of her life on stage. She dances and strolls around, closely followed by a videographer who captures the moment.

“It’s a pleasure to be back in Montreal, I’m quite moved because it’s the first time I’ve produced a tour on my own,” she shares with us moved, to applause. “It’s thanks to you that I’m able to do all this,” she continues.

She juggles classics like Corps with songs from her latest Mental project, such as Garçon and the crowd-pleasing hit Gasolina. Rock is omnipresent during the show, with her screaming and even shouting between intense electric guitar solos.

“Let me get rid of my wig, I’m going to get comfortable,” she says, before reappearing wearing a hat. Her stage presence is undeniable. “Can I share a new song with you, one that’s not out yet?” she asks the crowd, delighted by the privilege. And so we discover Problematic, which pleases the audience, especially the acoustic section, as well as Hysteria, also an unreleased song. Applause rained down, but it was especially after Corps that the crowd didn’t want to stop applauding. She did it a capella because she had promised herself that she would never do it again in piano-vocals, since the death of her pianist Nino Vella in 2024. The audience accompanied her on the chorus, one of the highlights of the show.

She finished with the track Suicide, ideal for closing the show, before returning for an encore in techno mode. It may have been a Monday night, but that didn’t stop the MTelus from being packed. Next stop: New York on February 3.

Francos de Montréal : Aliocha Schneider au MTelus

Tout commence à Montréal, où les parents d’Aliocha se sont installés, quittant Paris pour partir à l’aventure. Aliocha commence le chant à 10 ans, la guitare à 13. Il se met à écrire ses propres chansons, d’abord en anglais, puis il rencontre Jean Leloup son parrain de chanson qui le pousse vers le studio. Son premier disque, Eleven Songs, paru en 2017 sur Audiogram, permet à l’auteur-compositeur-interprète de se faire remarquer sur les scènes d’ici et d’ailleurs. En 2020, il enchaîne avec un second disque, Naked. En 2020, pour contrer le repos forcé par la pandémie, Aliocha s’essaye à un nouvel exercice: il traduit un de ses morceaux en français. Cela donne C’est tout, c’est rien, une première tentative très bien reçue, qui le pousse à continuer. Comme si en français, Aliocha s’ouvrait davantage, sur l’amour, la relation à distance, les désirs et les rêves. Aliocha tente d’autres sonorités, d’autres compositions. Ses deux premiers extraits, Avant Elle et Ensemble lui ont valu les éloges de la critique et du public. Le troisième album d’Aliocha Schneider est paru en septembre 2023 sur Audiogram.

It all begins in Montreal, where Aliocha’s parents settled after leaving Paris to seek adventure. Aliocha started singing at the age of 10 and playing guitar at 13. He began writing his own songs, initially in English, before meeting Jean Leloup, his mentor, who encouraged him to go into the studio. His debut album, Eleven Songs, released in 2017 on Audiogram, allowed the singer-songwriter to gain recognition on stages both locally and internationally. In 2020, he followed up with his second album, Naked. During the forced break caused by the pandemic, Aliocha tried his hand at a new challenge: translating one of his songs into French. This resulted in C’est tout, c’est rien, a first attempt that was well received, encouraging him to continue. It seemed that in French, Aliocha opened up more, exploring themes of love, long-distance relationships, desires, and dreams. He experimented with different sounds and compositions, and his first two singles, Avant Elle and Ensemble, earned critical and public acclaim. His third album was released in September 2023 on Audiogram.

Gowan au MTelus

Larry Gowan, connu sous le nom de Gowan, est un puissant chanteur de rock canadien, reconnu pour ses albums en solo et pour avoir remplacé Dennis DeYoung en tant que chanteur principal de Styx en 1999. After graduating, Gowan formed the prog rock outfit Rheingold, touring and recording with the group until they disbanded in the late ’70s. Grim Skunk au MTelus

Formé en 1988 après la dissolution du groupe hardcore montréalais Fatal Illness, Grim Skunk donne son premier concert au début de l’année suivante. Mélangeant rock alternatif mordant et éléments de ska, le groupe sort son premier album éponyme en 1994. En 1996, il fonde son propre label, Indica Records, sous lequel paraîtront plusieurs albums, dont Meltdown (1996) et Fieldtrip (1998).

Formed in 1988 upon the dissolution of Montreal hard-core band Fatal Illness, the band Grim Skunk played their first show early the following year. Combining edgy alternative rock with elements of ska, the group released their self-titled debut in 1994. By 1996, the group had started their own label, Indica Records, and further releases during the decade, including 1996′ Meltdown and 1998’s Fieldtrip, would be issued through this imprint.

MEUTE au MTelus

L’ensemble allemand MEUTE est une fanfare techno de 11 musiciens, interprétant des morceaux de musique électronique réarrangés ainsi que des compositions originales avec des instruments à vent et des percussions. Le groupe se produit aussi bien sur scène dans des clubs et des salles de concert que dans la rue, sans amplification. Leur reprise de Rej d’Âme en 2016, devenue virale, marque leurs débuts. L’année suivante, ils s’attaquent à un autre classique des clubs, The Man with the Red Face de Laurent Garnier, sur leur premier album Tumult. Au fil de leurs albums, MEUTE a repris des morceaux de Deadmau5, Disclosure, Trentemøller et d’autres artistes. Leur quatrième album studio, Empor, est sorti en 2024.

German ensemble MEUTE is an 11-piece techno marching band, performing reworked dance tracks as well as original compositions on brass instruments and percussion. The group performs on-stage in clubs and concert halls, as well as unamplified on the street. Debuting with a 2016 cover of Âme’s “Rej,” which achieved viral success, they tackled another club staple, Laurent Garnier’s “The Man with the Red Face,” on their 2017 full-length Tumult. On their subsequent releases, MEUTE has covered songs by Deadmau5, Disclosure, Trentemøller, and others. Their fourth studio album, Empor, appeared in 2024.

Now or Nowhere est le troisième album de The Damn Truth, un groupe qui, à bien des égards, a été sous les projecteurs sans vraiment se faire remarquer pendant les neuf dernières années. Ils ont joué en Europe et traversé les États-Unis et le Canada, ouvert pour ZZ Top (et fait la fête avec Billy Gibbons en pyjama), les Sheepdogs, Styx et Rival Sons, vendu à guichets fermés au légendaire Whisky a Go Go à Los Angeles, rempli le Théâtre Corona dans leur ville natale de Montréal, et même vu l’un de leurs clips être mis en avant sur la page officielle de Janis Joplin sur Facebook. C’est le fruit de beaucoup de travail acharné qui se concrétise avec Now or Nowhere.

Now or Nowhere is the third album by The Damn Truth, a band that, in many ways, has been hiding in plain sight for the last nine years. They’ve played Europe and crisscrossed the USA and Canada, opened tours for ZZ Top (and partied with Billy Gibbons in his pyjamas), the Sheepdogs, Styx and Rival Sons, sold out the legendary Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles, sold out the Corona Theatre in their hometown of Montreal, and even had one of their videos featured on the official Janis Joplin Facebook page. It’s a lineage of hard work that’s come to fruition with Now or Nowhere.

Se décrivant comme “DJ avant tout, producteur ensuite, et MC en dernier”, Madlib est l’alias principal d’Otis Jackson, Jr., qui est devenu l’un des artistes les plus célébrés, prolifiques et éclectiques du hip-hop depuis ses débuts au début des années 90. Également connu sous les pseudonymes Quasimoto, Beat Konducta et Yesterdays New Quintet, parmi ses dizaines de pseudos, le son unique et la texture du travail de Madlib – principalement créés sans ordinateurs en utilisant du matériel d’enregistrement et d’échantillonnage old-school – ont fait de lui un collaborateur recherché par de nombreux artistes phares du hip-hop et une figure largement admirée dans la scène rap underground. Originaire de Londres, FLO est un groupe connu pour son R&B contemporain aux sonorités pop, s’inscrivant dans la lignée de formations vocales comme les Anglaises Eternal et Sugababes, ainsi que Destiny’s Child et 3LW.
