Jane Penny

Co-fondé par Jane Penny et son ami d’enfance, David Carriere, à Montréal en 2011, TOPS a émergé de la même scène DIY locale que Grimes et Mac DeMarco. Le groupe s’est rapidement retrouvé à faire des tournées et des spectacles à guichets fermés à l’échelle internationale, à recevoir des éloges, à obtenir des places dans des festivals convoités et à accumuler des millions de streams. Le groupe venait de sortir son quatrième album studio lorsque Penny est tombée malade, souffrant d’une COVID longue pendant plus d’un an, alors qu’elle s’occupait de son partenaire à Berlin, qui était lui-même alité. Inspirée par la scène musicale berlinoise, séparée par la distance et les fuseaux horaires de ses collaborateur·ices habituel·les à Montréal, Penny s’est mise à développer une pratique créative indépendante. Lorsqu’elle a été suffisamment rétablie pour retourner à Montréal, Penny a mis la touche finale à l’EP avec son voisin et collaborateur de longue date, le producteur et musicien Patrick Holland, qui a assuré la production et le mixage de l’EP. « Il y a des choses que je voulais explorer sur le plan sonore et créatif, qui auraient été impossibles dans le contexte de TOPS. Je voulais relever le défi de créer un monde à part entière : écrire toutes les parties incluant la batterie, choisir chaque échantillon, écrire la ligne de basse. Ayant pris le contrôle de l’ensemble du monde musical que je créais, je suis devenue ouverte aux émotions, à la sensualité et à l’intuition qui naissent de la solitude. Il m’a fallu un certain temps pour atteindre un point où je me sentais prête à partager, mais maintenant les portes sont grandes ouvertes et je vais certainement continuer sur cette voie. » TOPS est toujours actif — le groupe travaille actuellement sur un nouvel album. « Il n’y a pas de façon plus satisfaisante de faire de la musique que de la jouer avec d’autres personnes, mais le format d’un groupe a certaines limites sur le plan sonore. Faire de la musique avec TOPS reste l’une de mes priorités dans la vie, et le groupe ne souffre absolument pas de mon travail solo. » « Cet EP est né d’une période d’obscurité et d’un point de faiblesse, mais je me sens responsable d’infuser les auditeurs d’un certain niveau de résilience », déclare Penny. « En tant qu’artiste, c’est mon travail de montrer aux gens qu’il est libérateur d’explorer certains de ces sentiments, mais je veux toujours leur laisser un rayon de lumière, une porte de sortie — pour ne pas que je l’oublie moi non plus. »

Co-founded by Jane Penny and her childhood friend David Carriere in Montreal in 2011, TOPS emerged from the same local DIY scene as the likes of Grimes and Mac DeMarco. The band quickly found themselves touring and selling out shows internationally, earning praise and critical acclaim, scoring highly sought-after festival slots, and racking up streaming numbers in the millions. The band had just released their fourth studio album when Penny became sick herself with long COVID for over a year while acting as a caretaker for her partner in Berlin who had become bedridden. Inspired by the musical scene in Berlin, but also separated by distance and time zones from her usual collaborators in Montreal, it became necessary for Penny to explore an independent creative practice. When she was finally well enough to return to Montreal, Penny put the finishing touches on the EP with her neighbor and long-time collaborator, producer and musician Patrick Holland, who provided additional production and mixing on the EP. “There are things I wanted to explore sonically and creatively, which would be impossible in the context of TOPS. I wanted to challenge myself to create a whole world of my own, to write all of the parts, program the drums, choose every sample, write the bass line. When I took control over the entire world of music that I was creating I felt that it also opened up a lot of emotional space, sensuality and intuition that comes through solitude. It took a while to reach a point where I feel it’s ready to share, but now the gates are open and I’ll definitely be continuing on this path. “ TOPS is still going strong – they’re currently working on a new record. “There isn’t a more soul-satisfying way to make music than to play it with other people, but a band format has certain limitations to its scope sonically. Making music with TOPS is still one of my main priorities in life, and the band definitely isn’t taking a back seat to my solo work.“ “This EP comes out of a period of darkness, and a point of weakness, but I feel responsible to leave listeners with a certain level of resilience,” Penny says. “As an artist, it’s my job to show people that it’s freeing to explore some of these feelings, but I always want to leave them with a ray of light, an escape hatch, because then I’m reminded of it, too.”

Ura Star & Fireball Kid

Depuis leur enfance, Ura Star et Fireball Kid font de l’indie pop à grand renfort de hooks et de fêtes. Tout juste sortis de leurs albums Gas Station, Emotional Bros Hotline et 2024’s Heartracer, ils sont prêts à faire la fête et à faire couler de la bière, dans un esprit de fête de cuisine, comme jamais auparavant.

Naomi

Naomi est une artiste multidisciplinaire au charisme évident et attire rapidement sur elle les projecteurs grâce à son talent multifacette. Naomi is a multi-disciplinary artist with undeniable charisma who snatches the spotlight with her multi-faceted talent. With her penchant for Caribbean summer tunes spiced up with pop, RnB and house influences, Naomi released her self-titled debut album in September 2022. Elan Noon

Elan Noon est le nom de scène de l’artiste canado-américain Keenan Mittag-Degala. Tissant librement les genres dans des chansons pop émotives, Elan Noon s’inspire de multi-instrumentistes introspectifs tels qu’Elliott Smith et Judee Sill. Enregistré principalement sur d’anciens accessoires à bande magnétique, le travail d’Elan Noon est truffé de textures décalées et de distorsions ludiques.

Elan Noon is the stage name of Canadian-American artist Keenan Mittag-Degala.
