Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Samba Canjerê Soirée samba et MPB avec Bianca Rocha au Balattou

Véritable phénomène culturel, la samba, si populaire, qui anime les rues brésiliennes et fait danser à travers le monde, possède de profondes racines. L’une de ses formes ancestrales, la samba de roda, relève du culte des orishas, dans la tradition Yoruba d’Angola et du Royaume du Kongo. Depuis 2019, authentique et chaleureux, avec un répertoire composé de classiques, de chansons traditionnelles et de compositions originales, Samba Canjerê célèbre l’ascendance afro-brésilienne de ce petit bijou de rythme où les percussions sont reines et qui incarne la joie de vivre.
À l’occasion de trois soirées spéciales, Samba Canjerê partagera la scène avec des artistes différents, faisant démonstration de la beauté et de la richesse des rythmes du Brésil.
Samba et MPB | avec Bianca Rocha : Artiste activiste inspirée par les grandes dames de la musique brésilienne, elle emprunte aux bossa nova et samba sans jamais les imiter, intègre le jazz sans jamais trop s’y attarder, puise dans les rythmes traditionnels comme le frevo, le milonga et le chamamé sans jamais s’apitoyer.

A genuine cultural phenomenon with deep roots, samba music is as popular as ever, enlivening Brazilian streets and inspiring people the world over to dance. One of its earliest forms, samba de Roda, has strong ties to orisha worship by the Yoruba of Angola and the Kingdom of Kongo. Authentic and lively, with a repertoire made up of classics, traditional songs and original compositions, Samba Canjerê has been celebrating the Afro-Brazilian roots of this musical treasure since 2019, and their rhythms proclaim a joie de vivre where percussions reign supreme.
On three special evenings, Samba Canjerê will share the stage with a host of artists, demonstrating the beauty and richness of Brazilian rhythms.
Samba and MPB | with Bianca Rocha: Artist and activist, Bianca, who found inspiration in some of Brazil’s greatest female music artists, borrows from bossa nova and samba but never imitates them, integrates jazz elements but doesn’t get too caught up in them, and draws on traditional rhythms such as frevo, milonga and chamamé without ever losing herself in them.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Fulu Miziki Kolektiv au Balattou

“Pas d’électronique, mais un groove unique” (France 24, 2023). Sur les traces des pionniers de Konono n°1, qui ont parti le mouvement dans les années 60, Fulu Miziki Kolektiv, littéralement “le son des poubelles” en lingala, fait sa marque en transposant les bruits des rues de Kinshasa en une transe techno-punk afro-futuriste imprimée de rumba congolaise. Les objets recyclés convertis en percussions artisanales, sur lesquels ils frappent comme si leur vie en dépendait, exultent une énergie furieuse et l’urgence d’agir pour préserver l’environnement, renforcées par des voix rauques et puissantes sorties du plus creux de leur âme et par des costumes DIY qui traduisent leur engagement.

“No electronics, but a unique groove” (France 24, 2023). Following in the footsteps of the pioneering Konono N°1, who started the movement in the ’60s, Fulu Miziki—literally “music from garbage” in Lingala—have made their mark by transposing the noise of Kinshasa’s streets into an Afro-futuristic techno-punk stamped with Congolese rumba. Energized by a sense of urgency to protect the environment, they furiously drum on the handcrafted percussion instruments they have fashioned out of discarded objects as they propel their powerful voices from the depths of their souls, while their DIY costumes bring their message home.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : La Chiva Gantiva au Balattou

“C’est avant tout sur scène que La Chiva Gantiva a rencontré son succès, avec ses manières exubérantes et sa présence explosive” (RTBF, 2017). Après 3 ans de silence radio, La Chiva Gantiva, qui a collaboré avec Antibalas et Arrested Development et a ouvert pour Iggy Pop, reprend la route avec de nouveaux titres à l’occasion de son 15è anniversaire. Un son densément rock, parfois presque punk, aéré d’électro, de funk et d’afrobeat ; des cumbia, champeta, chirimia, mapalé diablement revampés: La Chiva Gantiva appartient à cette nouvelle génération qui se réapproprie et partage avec aplomb, énergie, générosité et passion les rythmes traditionnels afro-colombiens.

“By far, it is La Chiva Gantiva’s exuberance and explosive stage presence that has driven their success” (RTBF, 2017). After three years of radio silence, the group, which has previously opened for Iggy Pop and worked in collaboration with Antibalas and Arrested Development, is celebrating their 15th anniversary by heading back on the road with their newest material. A solid rock sound, at times almost punk, spiced up with electro, funk and Afrobeat along with a blend of cumbia, champeta, chirimia and mapalé, all revamped to the max. La Chiva Gantiva is part of a new generation reclaiming and spreading traditional Afro-Colombian rhythms with confidence, enthusiasm, generosity and passion.

Let’s Yiddish’n’roll with Kallisto!

I’ve already spoken to you about Kallisto, a klezmer yiddish-folk Anatolian-psychedelic-rock meets balkanic-swing quintet that tickled my ears at the Sylis d’or 2023 at the Balattou club (READ THE INTERVIEW I DID HERE – in French), here in Montreal. I had the chance to see them live again on Sunday evening, 18 May 2025 at Balattou, and the initial impression remains the same: this is a very solid band, aesthetically and musically, built on the foundations of Jewish music but blending multiple influences that blend organically and very festively. The sub-genres mentioned above can all be found, to a greater or lesser extent, in one of the band’s pieces, whether standard or original composition. 

That said, the group is not the same as it was in 2023, except for leader Jossée McInnis (clearly the creative soul of the ensemble), who is also a clarinettist. The Montrealer (formerly from London, ON) is an instrumentalist with a rock-solid musical science, classic technique and tonal precision, to be sure. But she swings well and handles the colours and inflections of klezmer music with perfect ease. The lady has surrounded herself with other top names, perhaps even better than in the Sylis 2023 version: Antoine Bensoussan on guitar (a skilful surf-styler, among others), Jefferson Perez on cello (brilliant in both his tonal beauty and his improvisational skills), Patrick Lebrun on bass and Edward Scrimger on drums. 

Kallisto play regular gigs in good small venues, from Montreal to Sherbrooke to Toronto, so keep an eye on the agenda of your favourite live music bars. If they happen to be in your area, be sure to give them a listen. It’s a great way to spend the evening.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Sousou & Maher Cissokho au Balattou

Connivence. C’est le mot qui vient à l’esprit quand on parle de la suédoise Sousou et du griot sénégalais Maher Cissokho, qui sont de retour à Montréal après avoir conquis le public de Nuits d’Afrique en 2015, puis en 2019. Regards tendres, sourires sincères, étreintes musicales, voix chaleureuses qui s’unissent… Leur évidente complicité apporte un petit supplément d’âme à leurs rythmes sans frontières. Contant subtilement romance à celles de la guitare acoustique, les cordes de la majestueuse kora sont au cœur d’un son tout en émotion qui transcende les traditions mandingues grâce à des insertions de mbalax, de folk, de soul, de blues et de reggae.

Deep complicity. That’s what comes to mind when we think of Swedish-born singer and musician Sousou and Senegalese griot Maher Cissokho, who will be returning to Festival Nuits d’Afrique after having already won the hearts of Montrealers in 2015 and again in 2019. Tender glances, genuine smiles, musical embraces and the warmth in their voices unite them … and this obvious complicity adds extra soul to their rhythms that transcend borders. Romance subtly finds its way into the acoustic guitar and majestic kora strings at the heart of their enchanting sound that extends beyond Mandinka traditions with an infusion of mbalax, folk, soul, blues and reggae.

Profondément ancrée dans la tradition, portée par les vibrations graves des cordes du guembri et le son claquant des karkabous, amplifiée par des répétitions entêtantes, ferment d’une transe libératrice, la musique de Boulila, lauréat des Syli d’or de la musique du monde 2021, renouvelle les codes de ce genre à la fois festif et thérapeutique par une instrumentation alliant guitare, saxophone, basse, piano et batterie, révélant l’africanité des musiques populaires occidentales.
La versatilité des rythmes marocains sera à l’honneur de ces trois soirées étoilées où Boulila jammera avec trois émissaires de la scène montréalaise.
Soirée samba marocaine | avec Bolabola Montréal: Comme au bled, les tambours et les youyous résonneront alors que Bolabola Montréal entrera en scène avec ses rythmes issawa et dakka, typiques des rites soufistes, dans une authentique frénésie qu’on ne trouve nulle part ailleurs qu’à Marrakech.

Boulila’s music is strongly grounded in tradition, carried by the low vibrations of the guembri’s strings and the clinking of the krakebs, and is amplified by intoxicating repetition and the ferment of a liberating trance. Winners of the 2021 Syli d’or de la musique du monde, the group revisits the conventions of this festive and therapeutic musical genre with instrumentation that combines guitar, saxophone, bass, piano and drums, exposing the African roots of popular Western music.
The versatility of Moroccan rhythms will be the focus of these three star-studded evenings, as Boulila jams with three emissaries from the Montreal scene.
Moroccan Samba evening | with Bolabola Montréal: Just like they would in the villages, drums and ululations reverberate when the members of Bolabola Montréal take to the stage with their Issawa and Dakka rhythms, typical of Sufi rites, in an authentic frenzy found nowhere else except in Marrakech.

Gnawa Fusion evening | with Jean-Philippe Grégoire: This jazz guitarist, who trained at the Conservatoire de Paris, holds a Musicology degree from the Sorbonne and studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, “tries to integrate aspects of jazz improvisation into traditional Gnawa music, while taking care to respect its integrity.”

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Less Toches Dub avec O.N.S au Balattou

Leur cumbia toute montréalaise, agitée des vibrations culturelles si propre à la métropole, est pourtant inscrite dans les gènes de ces cinq musiciens originaires du Mexique, de la Colombie, de Cuba et de l’Argentine. Combinant avec malice l’accordéon, la guacharaca, les percussions afro-colombiennes et la basse, ce groupe latin alternatif, lauréat des Syli d’or 2024, amène les cumbia sabanera, cumbia rebajada, cumbia villera et cumbia mexicana sur les dance floor, expérimentant un folklore de village à la fois poétique et festif, qui aspire à la vie et à la liberté.
Trois concerts, trois invités, trois ambiances. La variété et le dynamisme de la musique colombienne seront à l’honneur lors de cette série Étoiles.
Dub | avec O.N.S & friends: Comme quoi l’ethnomusicologie peut prendre différentes formes… Le jour, ce chercheur post doc est professeur au Département de musique de l’UQÀM. La nuit, il se métamorphose en musicien reggae relax ou en un redoutable DJ. O.N.S & friends est le dernier projet en date de Ons Barnat, un concept live dub mix excitant concocté de compos reggae-dub originales, en collaboration avec Yarra Sound System.

Although their unique style of cumbia is imbued with Montreal’s cultural vibes, this genre is in the DNA of the five musicians who hail from Mexico, Colombia, Cuba and Argentina. Playfully mixing accordion, bass, guacharaca and other Afro-Colombian percussion instruments, this alternative Latin band, winners of the Syli d’or 2024, bring different styles of cumbia—Mexicana, rebajada, sabanera and villera—to the dance floor, while they experiment with poetic and festive village folk traditions that embrace life and freedom.
Three concerts, three guests, three flavours. The diversity and vitality of Colombian music will be in the spotlight during this Étoiles series.
Dub | with O·N·S: Ethnomusicology can take many forms… By day, Ons Barnat is a postdoc researcher and professor in the Department of Music at UQÀM. But by night, he morphs into a laid-back reggae musician or a formidable DJ. For his latest project, O·N·S & Friends, he has teamed up with Yarra Sound System to deliver an exciting live dub experience featuring original reggae dub mixes.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : La Tribu Salsa band au Balattou

“En un rien de temps, le parterre s’est transformé en plancher de danse. Une performance simplement parfaite” (Le Devoir, 2023). Lauréate des Syli d’or de la musique du monde 2023, la Tribu Salsa Band, c’est la salsa dura à son meilleur: des pas de danse synchronisés, des costumes chics, mais surtout une section de cuivres énergique, un piano flamboyant, une basse en plein contrôle, des percussions punchées et quatre chanteurs qui mènent le bal avec adresse. Tout pour faire honneur à ce rythme créé dans les années 70 à New York et popularisé par le mythique chef d’orchestre dominicain Johnny Pacheco.

“In the blink of an eye, the parterre turned into a dancefloor. A simply perfect show” (Le Devoir, 2023). Winners of the Syli d’or 2023, La Tribu Salsa Band is salsa dura at its finest: Synchronized moves and dapper outfits, certainly, but most of all, it’s their lively brass section, flamboyant piano playing, tight bass, punch percussions and, of course, the four singers who front the show. A real tribute to this musical style that emerged in the 1970s and was popularized by legendary Dominican bandleader, Johnny Pacheco.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Soul Bang’s au Balattou

“Il ne fait pas un pas dans Conakry, sa ville natale, sans être interpellé, sans sacrifier au sacro-saint culte du selfie. Ses titres sont téléchargés jusqu’à plus soif et il est l’un des deux ou trois chanteurs guinéens à remplir, en concert, des stades de 40 000 personnes.” (Paris Match, 2019). Star de la scène R&B ouest-africaine, Soul Bang’s a bénéficié du coup de pouce du prix Découvertes RFI, dont il a été lauréat en 2016, pour se faire connaître sur la scène internationale. Servi par une jolie voix, cristalline et sensuelle, le beau-fils du célébrissime Mory Kanté livre une afro-pop typée soul bien actuelle et nourrie de sonorités mandingues assumées. Chantant en français, soussou, malinké et poular, ce performer, qui a croisé les routes de Kery James, Akon et Stevie Wonder, prépare un 6e album pour 2025.

“He can’t go anywhere in Conakry, his native city, without being approached to make a sacrifice to the sacrosanct selfie cult, while his songs are downloaded like crazy. He is one of just a handful of Guinean singers who fill the concert venues with 40,000 fans” (Paris Match, 2019). Star of the West African R&B scene, his world opened up further when he won RFI’s Prix Découvertes in 2016. With his beautiful, crystalline, sensual voice, the son-in-law of the celebrated Mory Kanté delivers a soulful afro-pop that is both modern and steeped in a Mandinka soundscape. Singing in French, Susu, Malinké and Pular, this supreme performer, who has crossed paths with the likes of Kery James, Akon and Stevie Wonder, is set to release his 6th album in 2025.
