TEAM SALSA is a group formed by musicians from different countries who wish to express the rich essence of the Afro-descendant rhythms of “Salsa del Barrio” (Salsa From The Neighborhood) with the power of trombones, haunting harmonies and the energy of percussion. Marc Knight, founder of Team Salsa, grew up in New York City and brings the sound and swing found in the New York and Afro-Caribbean salsa style. The musicians of TEAM SALSA have accompanied many international salsa artists and now come together to bring the original sound of salsa to life.
TEAM SALSA est un groupe formé par des musiciens de différents pays qui souhaitent exprimer la riche essence des rythmes afro-descendants de ‘’Salsa del Barrio’’(Salsa From The Neighborhood) avec la puissance des trombones, les harmonies envoûtantes et l’énergie des percussions. Racines is the musical project of Laurent Perrault-Jolicoeur, a McGill-qualified jazz bassist, and Zal Sissokho, a korafola known for his off-the-beaten-track projects such as Kora Flamenca and Famalé. Together, the two composers seek to reweave and retrace the links between Mandingo and jazz music through their compositions that hybridise the rhythms, harmony and improvisation of each of these traditions.
Racines est le projet musical de Laurent Perrault-Jolicoeur, contrebassiste jazz gradué de McGill, et Zal Sissokho, korafola connu pour ses projets sortant des sentiers battus comme Kora Flamenca ou Famalé. A native of Tiko in the southwest region of Cameroon, this positive soul with an infectious energy spares no efforts while performing to win over his audience who can’t get enough of his exuberant dance moves! It is for that very reason that Oluwa Banjo really turned heads during the 2016 Cameroonian national music competition at Mützig Star.

“People want something refreshing,” Kenzow told The Gazette, saying he wanted to bring West African guitar coolness to the city streets. Idrissa Ouedraogo’s son wields a reggae-inspired African pop sound, sometimes straying into soukous corners.
A young singer-songwriter from Burkina Faso, he moved to Montreal two years ago after a stint in France. You can hear him playing music in the streets of Montreal or in the subway.
With urban Afro pop and reggae sounds in the style of West Africa, Kenzow wishes to touch and move as many people as possible, regardless of their origins.
Very inspired, the musician spends his time looking for new sounds, often accompanied by his guitar. Son of the famous African director Idrissa Ouedraogo, Kenzow has been rocked by art and culture since his childhood.
« Les gens veulent quelque chose de rafraichissant », expliquait Kenzow à The Gazette, disant du même coup vouloir amener la coolitude de la guitare ouest-africaine dans les rues de la ville. Le fils d’Idrissa Ouedraogo manie une pop africaine inspirée de reggae, s’égarant parfois dans des recoins soukous.
Jeune artiste auteur-compositeur-interprète, originaire du Burkina Faso, il a posé ses bagages à Montréal il y a deux ans, après un passage par la France. On peut d’ailleurs l’entendre jouer de la musique dans les rues de Montréal ou dans le métro.
Avec des sonorités afro pop urbaine et reggae dans le style d’Afrique de l’Ouest, Kenzow souhaite toucher et émouvoir le plus de monde possible, peu importe les origines.
Très inspiré, le musicien passe son temps à la recherche de nouvelles sonorités, souvent accompagné de sa guitare. Fils du célèbre réalisateur Africain Idrissa Ouedraogo, Kenzow a été bercé par l’art et la culture, depuis son enfance.

Ricky Rickson (Ricky Makwe Bazilepo), born on July 4, 1986 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a polyglot singer/songwriter and keyboardist fluent in French, Swahili, Lingala, and English. At the age of ten, he lost his sight due to an injury during the war. Despite his challenges, his passion for music led him to move to South Africa, where he began his career touring with a band, performing at festivals, and recording. Now based in Winnipeg, Ricky is exploring his creativity with music influenced by reggae and rhumba. He seeks to move his audience while challenging stereotypes about the blind in the music industry.

Chanda&The Passengers began in 2016 when Zander Masser (guitar) posted an online ad looking for funk/soul musicians for a new band. The process works wonders: a few weeks later, the 7 members of Chanda&The Passengers start meeting weekly to write and develop their sound.
Montreal-born Chanda Holmes (vocals) pushes the band in a soul and R&B direction. She takes the stage at every show, winning over the audience. Pierre Emond (Saxophone) studied jazz at McGill before leaving to live and play in Europe for 15 years. Carlos Casique (Piano) immigrated to Canada from Venezuela to become a musician; he takes care of the jazz harmony and Latin rhythms in the songs. Zander Masser (Guitar), originally from New York, has played in dozens of bands in the U.S. and now wants to bring the groove to Canada. Laurent Massie (bass), has spent his life playing in Quebec in funk, prog and pop bands. He anchors and pushes the band’s pieces. Gonzalo Camelo (trumpet) hails from Colombia and brings the classic salsa sound he has developed over a long international musical career. Finally, RomainPeynichou (drums), from Paris, mixes his passion for funk music and jazz drums into Chanda&The Passengers’ pieces.
After two years of existence and over 30 shows, the band has been pushed towards the recording of “Medicinal Love”, released on February 14, 2019. It’s at live shows that Chanda&The Passengers really come into their own; it’s there that the band members let their individualities shine through the most, the group cohesion they’ve developed, and above all the deep love they have for Funk music.”

Laurent Massie (basse), a passé sa vie à jouer au Québec dans des formations funk, prog et pop. C’est lui ancre et pousse les pièces du band. Gonzalo Camelo (trompette) vient de Colombie et apporte le son classique salsa qu’il a su développer au cours d’une longue carrière musicale internationale. Finalement, Romain Peynichou (batterie), provenant de Paris, mixe sa passion pour la musique funk et la batterie jazz dans les pièces de Chanda & The Passengers.
Après deux ans d’existence et plus de 30 spectacles, la formation a été poussé vers l’enregistrement de “Medicinal Love”, sorti le 14 Février 2019. C’est en spectacle que Chanda & The Passengers prennent tout leur sens ; c’est là que les membres du groupes laissent le plus transparaître leur individualités, la cohésion de groupe qu’ils ont développé, et surtout l’amour profond qu’ils portent à la musique Funk.”

Forró is a cultural expression born in the northeastern region of Brazil, but very important in the whole country. Its traditional rhythms include baião, arrasta pé and xote, making people dance and sing to lyrics and melodies composed by Luiz Gonzaga, Dominguinhos, Anastácia, among other great composers.
Born in Recife and extremely immersed in this musical universe, multi-instrumentalist Lara Klaus formed the trio “Forró de Lá” with musicians Rodrigo Simões and Gabriel Schwartz, who promise to bring a little bit of Brazil to Montreal and make the audience have fun. The word “lá” refers to the Brazilian northeast and also to the first syllable of the name “Lara”.
Forró est une expression culturelle née dans la région du nord-est du Brésil, mais très importante dans tout le pays. Ses rythmes traditionnels incluent baião, arrasta pé et xote, faisant danser et chanter des paroles et des mélodies composées par Luiz Gonzaga, Dominguinhos, Anastácia, parmi d’autres grands compositeurs.
