Soran, the young pop virtuoso from Montreal, knows how to dismantle grief.
When you’re alone, when life is tearing you apart, when the world’s walls
the world around you, making art can feel like an explosive way
through the darkness. “Every song should be made with excitement, otherwise it’s not
shouldn’t be made,” he says with a shy smile. Soran’s new album,
Loneliness Confetti (due March 15, 2024), more than delivers on that promise.
Oozing with vintage ’80s synthpop, Prince-like elegance and modern
modern pop maximalist wonder, the eight-track set is the latest statement from a
latest statement from an up-and-coming multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and lyricist
as he moves ever closer to the limelight.

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, performer and curator L’Rain (Taja Cheek) returns with her third album I Killed Your Dog. Over-writing themes of grief and identity that informed her previous work, I Killed Your Dog considers what it means to hurt the people you love the most. Multi-layered in subject and form, L’Rain’s sonic explorations interrogate instead how multiplicities of emotion and experience intersect with identity. The experimental and the hyper-commercial; the expectation and the reality; the hope and the despair. “I’m envisioning a world of contradictions, as always,” Cheek explains. “Sensual, maybe even sexy, but terrifying, and strange.” Written amidst heartbreaks from the perspective of an earned maturity, I Killed Your Dog takes the sonic world laid out by L’Rain in 2021’s album Fatigue on a compelling new trajectory.

Album Release: Stoylov at Fairmount

Stoylov is an indie music project led by Montrealer singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Dubé. Characterized by a cinematic musical approach reminiscent of film noir soundtracks, lush sonic textures, upbeat grooves and earworm melodies, Stoylov pushes the boundaries of the indie rock genre while inviting you to dive into his own soundscape like you would experience in a Dostoievsky’s novel or a David Lynch movie. Malvina, his second album, released on November 10th, 2023 explores themes of uncertainty and spirituality while taking roots in Miles of Interruptions’s musical universe, Stoylov’s debut album released in May of 2021. Nicolas devoted countless hours to the crafting of Malvina with an obsession to details in chord progressions, melodies, rhythms, arrangements, tones and atmospheres. Co-produced by Joe Grass (Elisapie, Patrick Watson, The Barr Brothers), mixed by Howie Beck (Fiest, River Tiber, Milk and Bone) and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova (Andy Shauf, Bahamas, Devandra Banhart), this second record draw inspirations from Portishead’s visceral grooves, Patricia Highsmith’s uncanny narratives, Twin Peaks’s surrealism, Eliott Smith’s delicate vocals and William Basinski’s experimental compositions.

Without experimentation, innovation is impossible. For Rochelle Jordan, this desire for sonic expansion has been long embedded into her fusion offuturistic and ancestrally soulful R&B. To listen to a ROJO song is to absorb a phosphorescent but subtle blend of sampledelic 90s pop, vintage UK house and garage, 31st century electronic bangers, airy late night ballads, and progressive hip-hop.

Born in London to British-Jamaican parents, Jordan and her family relocated to the eastside of Toronto in the early ‘90s. Her father, a drummer, encouraged her love of art and instilled an appreciation forNorthern soul, and Jamaican reggae and dancehall. Bleeding through thewalls of her childhood bedroom, the adolescent Jordan soaked in the record collection of her older brother: funky UK house, nocturnal drum and bass, garage, and all the gospel samples contained therein.

Sans expérimentation, il n’y a pas d’innovation possible. Pour Rochelle Jordan, ce désir d’expansion sonore est depuis longtemps ancré dans sa fusion de R&B uturiste et d’âme ancestrale. Écouter une chanson de ROJO, c’est absorber un mélange phosphorescent mais subtil de pop samplée des années 90, de house et de garage britanniques vintage, de bangers électroniques du 31e siècle, de ballades aériennes de fin de soirée et de hip-hop progressif.

Née à Londres de parents britannico-jamaïcains, Jordan et sa famille ont déménagé dans l’est de Toronto au début des années 90. Son père, batteur, a encouragé son amour de l’art et lui a inculqué une appréciation de la soul nordique, du reggae jamaïcain et du dancehall. L’adolescente Jordan s’est imprégnée de la collection de disques de son frère aîné à travers les murs de sa chambre d’enfant : funky UK house, drum and bass nocturne, garage, et tous les échantillons de gospel qu’ils contiennent.
