Take two vibraphones and two marimbas, add a large portion of bandoneon and a hint of percussion. And you’ve got Trio Metamorphosis.
An unusual combination.
French-Corsican Philippe Biondi, Jean-Michel Giannelli and Italian Daniele di Bonaventura met in the famous Corsican group A Filetta, particularly renowned for its polyphonic songs.
No vocals here. Only instruments. You can’t really identify this music with Corsica. Despite the omnipresence of the bandoneon, it’s not tango.
So what is Trio Metamaorphosis? Cinematic music, a kind of ambient cruise in the Mediterranean or somewhere in the South. A mixture of happiness, sadness and meditation. The mix of percussion and bandoneon works very well. There’s a repetitive side to it that doesn’t get in the way. We let ourselves be carried along on the musical journey.
Philippe Biondi is musical director and composed most of the 11 tracks. There is also a version of Kyrie Eleison, the traditional Christian hymn at a high mass. Lord have mercy.
The pleasure the three have had in playing together and improvising is contagious. Excellent music for meditation or listening while reading.
A Ricumpensa (Reward in Corsica) is the trio’s first opus. Will there be more?
