Poirier – Quiet Revolution

· by Michel Labrecque

Poirier, whose given name is Ghislain, continues his musical journey in continuity, following Soft Power, released in 2020. Quiet Revolution is his twelfth album, the title is a discreet nod to an important period in Quebec society; perhaps only in Quebec are revolutions quiet, albeit lasting. In the 1960s, for example, French-speaking Quebecers put an end to the absolute domination of the Catholic Church, rendering it obsolete.

But Poirier’s Quebec is resolutely open to the world. The DJ, producer and musician continues to collaborate with Quebecers of all origins and in different languages. The artist’s quiet revolution loves encounters and the slow transformations they bring.

In this new opus, Poirier collaborates with Colombians Jimena Angel and Ramon Chicharron, Malian Djely Tapa, French Jérôme Minière, Anglo-Montrealer Paul Cargnello, Brazilian Flavia Nascimento and Cape Verdean Ely Swares. It’s a portrait of the Montreal of 2024, but one that could resonate anywhere in the world. Poirier is often surprised by comments from listeners around the world who say they have been following and adoring his music for many years. The songs are sung in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Malian dialect and one in English.

The music is a blend of electronic grooves and analog or digital instruments. Poirier has clearly assimilated the rhythmic codes of world sound music with those of the electro planet. He manages to blend all this together in an increasingly skilful way, resulting in a very accessible sound. He also claims to subtly blend the poetic and the political. We just have to believe him.

All we have to do is let ourselves be rocked and swayed by the talent of Poirier and his collaborators. By this Quiet Revolution!
