Montreal Pride Weekend 2020: Adam Lambert and Backxwash

by Patrick Baillargeon

As the pandemic obliges, the Montreal Pride Festival must make the best of a tough situation. So, for this year, the event presents all its programming online, via various platforms. For the musical component this weekend, Fierté Mtl has invited, among others, Montreal DJ Odile Myrtil, who takes over the turntables today – Saturday – from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the festival’s Twitch account.  Singer-songwriter and performer, she’s also resident DJ at the Moonshine nights and has played at Igloofest, Piknic Électronik and Osheaga, among others. On Sunday at 7 p.m., Fierté Mtl hosts Adam Lambert, who filled Freddie Mercury’s shoes in Queen. The rapper Backxwash, whose name is circulating more and more in Montreal and elsewhere, and who’s likely to win the 2020 Polaris Prize (at least, that’s what we think at PAN M 360), opens for Lambert. You can attend this show for free on the event’s Facebook page. Party proudly!

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

by Patrick Baillargeon

The furious Texas post-punk band …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead play three one-hour online shows live from their Austin HQ. The first is co-presented by local promoter Blue Skies Turn Black, to whom the band will donate 20% of their ticket sales.

The quintet, led since 1994 by Jason Reece and Conrad Keely, who share the drums, guitar and microphone respectively, will perform some of the songs from their most recent album X: The Godless Voice and Other Stories, released in early 2020, marks the band’s return to the recording studio, having not released anything since 2014. Those who saw them live on stage last year at Distortion or EMF know that the band is capable of reaching dizzying sound levels. Crank it up!

Bérurier Noir Tribute Concert

by Patrick Baillargeon

This second tribute to the legendary Bérurier Noir comes live from L’Anti in Quebec City. After the crazy Montreal night at Le Ritz a few months ago, before it all blew up in our faces, Ripcordz bassist Alex, on guitar, and V8, singer from Les Ordures Ioniques, are back with the costumes, the saxophone, the indispensable beat-box and a lot of sweat. A tropical punk fiesta to celebrate the Bérurier spirit! Put the beer on ice, you’re going to need it! For those who want to support L’Anti Bar & Spectacles and local musicians, a $30 package is offered if you’re three or more people tuned in. The first 300 tickets are $8 and the rest will be $10 (both prices + tax and service). Les Bérus are dead, long live les Bérus!

Anvil

Like so many others, Anvil was forced to cancel the tour that they had on their agenda to promote the release of their 18th album, entitled Legal At Last. Consequently, when the owner of L’Anti Bar & Spectacles in Quebec City offered to present a virtual concert live from his venue, the Canadian band, who had already composed five of the songs for their next album, jumped at the chance. According to organizers District 7 Production and L’Anti Bar & Spectacles, fans can expect an impeccable concert in terms of sound, images and lighting.

Rough Trade Transmissions present Public Practice

by Patrick Baillargeon

To mark the release of the vinyl and CD of the excellent Gentle Grip, pleasantly received when the digital version was released a few weeks ago, the New York dance-punk/no-wave band will present the thing live from the Rough Trade shop and concert hall in Brooklyn. Public Practice is the meeting of almost everything that was best in post-punk, dance-punk, no wave and new wave from 1978 to 1982. Think Blondie, Talking Heads, ESG, Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, Suicide, Gang of Four, and especially Au Pairs, all executed with accuracy but without an ounce of nostalgia! It’s free and it’s not to be missed.
