M pour Montréal présente Sarah Pagé

Pour résumer la carrière de la harpiste montréalaise Sarah Pagé, il faudrait dessiner de longues constellations à travers les genres, les frontières et les histoires. Bien qu’elle soit peut-être mieux connue en tant que membre fondatrice et de longue date du groupe The Barr Brothers, un bref survol de son curriculum vitae révèle qu’elle est aussi à l’aise dans les traditions qu’en dehors. Son premier album solo, Dose Curves, confirme cette polyvalence et révèle Pagé comme une des expérimentatrices les plus accomplies du Canada.

To encapsulate the career of Montreal-based harpist Sarah Pagé, one would have to draw long, constellation-like shapes across genres, borders and histories. While perhaps best known as a founding and longtime member of roots rockers The Barr Brothers, a brief consideration of her resume reveals the fact that she’s equally at home within traditions as without them. Her first solo LP, Dose Curves, affirms this versatility and reveals Pagé as one of Canada’s most accomplished experimentalists.

Ping Pong Go fait partie du nouveau label instrumental popop qui a vu le jour à la mi-novembre 2021

Ping Pong Go is the instrumental music project of pianist Vincent Gagnon and drummer P-E Beaudoin, who have performed with Hubert Lenoir, Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Keith Kouna, Tire le Coyote, Ariane Roy and Gabrielle Shonk, to name a few. Ping Pong Go is part of the new popop instrumental label that was launched in mid-November 2021

Normand Guilbeault Ensemble au Upstairs

Charles Mingus est le créateur d’une œuvre magistrale à la mesure et à l’excès de sa personnalité : impulsive, composite et engagée. Il réunit la tradition afro-américaine (blues, gospel), le swing coloré de Duke Ellington et les acquis du bebop. Il flirte avec l’écriture classique occidentale et anticipe la révolution du free jazz. Charles Mingus reste celui dont l’émotion, même violente et dérangeante, est certainement la plus honnête. Son style éclectique, ouvert et libre, traverse tous les grands courants du jazz. Normand Guilbeault pourrait bien être le premier musicien canadien à avoir démontré une profonde reconnaissance de l’influence de Charles Mingus. Guilbeault s’est considérablement investi pour déchiffrer et décoder la beauté et le mystère de l’œuvre de Mingus, à laquelle il rend ici hommage avec son ensemble de 6 musiciens.

Charles Mingus is the master creator of a masterwork commensurate and excessive like his personality: impulsive, composite and committed. It brings together the Afro-American tradition (blues, gospel), the colorful swing of Duke Ellington and the achievements of bebop. He flirts with Western classical writing and anticipates the revolution of free jazz. Charles Mingus remains the one whose emotion, even violent and disturbing, is certainly the most honest. His eclectic style, open and free, crosses all the great currents of jazz. Normand Guilbeault could well be the first Canadian musician to have demonstrated a deep recognition of the influence of Charles Mingus. Guilbeault has invested considerably in deciphering and decoding the beauty and mystery of Mingus’ work, to which he pays homage here with his ensemble of 6 musicians.

Shawn McPherson est un harmoniciste et chanteur de blues canadien. Ayant joué du blues au Québec depuis son adolescence, il s’est déjà imposé comme l’un des grands harmonicistes et frontmen canadiens de la relève. Avec sa voix tonitruante et sa présence énergique sur scène, votre attention sera attirée dès la première note.

Fortement influencés par les authentiques bluesmen de Chicago tels que Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II et Big Walter Horton, Shawn et son groupe jouent un authentique Chicago Blues. À l’aide d’instruments, de microphones et d’amplificateurs d’époque, vous serez transporté dans le temps, dans les juke-joints du début des années 1950.

Shawn McPherson is a Canadian blues harmonica player and singer. Having played the blues around Quebec since he was a young teen, he has already established himself as one of the great up-and-coming Canadian harmonica players and frontmen. With a booming voice and energetic stage presence, your attention will be drawn-in from the first note.

Heavily influenced by authentic Chicago bluesmen such as Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and Big Walter Horton, Shawn and his band play authentic Chicago Blues. Using period-correct instruments, microphones, and amplifiers, you’ll be taken back in time to the juke joints of the early 1950s.

Cydemind et Karcius au Théâtre Plaza

Le groupe de métal progressif montréalais CYDEMIND sera de retour sur scène le vendredi 18 novembre 2022 pour célébrer la sortie de son nouvel album The Descent. L’événement se déroulera au Théâtre Plaza, à Montréal. Pour CYDEMIND, ce sera un premier retour sur scène depuis 2018. « On est vraiment excités (et stressés!) de rejouer devant un public. On s’était promis de ne plus rejouer avant d’avoir sorti du nouveau contenu. Avec la Covid, ça aura pris plus de temps qu’on pensait, mais on est finalement prêts! », admet Camille Delage, pianiste du groupe.

Montreal progressive metal band CYDEMIND will be back on stage on Friday, November 18, 2022 to celebrate the release of their new album The Descent. The event will take place at the Plaza Theatre in Montreal and will be CYDEMIND’s first return to the stage since 2018. We’re really excited (and stressed!) to play in front of an audience again,” admits Camille Delage, the band’s pianist. We promised ourselves that we wouldn’t play again until we released new content. With Covid, it took longer than we thought, but we’re finally ready!”

Lancement d’album : Mathieu Soucy au Upstairs

Mathieu Soucy est “un jeune guitariste passionnant” (Laila Biali, Saturday Night Jazz) et compositeur vivant à Montréal. Son premier album Recollecting (chez Inner-Bop Records), qui comprend des voix brillantes de la nouvelle génération du jazz canadien, sortira le 30 septembre. Caity Gyorgy, lauréate d’un JUNO, fait une apparition sur deux titres en tant que chanteuse et parolière.

L’album est un acte de mémoire, c’est-à-dire qu’il parle le même langage que celui des pionniers du hard-bop, comme Barney Kessel et son célèbre trio, mais il le fait avec un accent, celui d’un jeune artiste canadien de 27 ans dont la voix intime a été colorée par le maître du néo-bop Mark Turner. Mathieu a eu la chance d’étudier avec les guitaristes modernes de renom Peter Bernstein et Alex Goodman.

Mathieu Soucy is “an exciting young guitarist” (Laila Biali, Saturday Night Jazz) and composer living in Montréal. His first album “Recollecting” (Inner-Bop Records) features brilliant voices of the new generation of Canadian jazz and is set for release on September 30th. JUNO-winning Caity Gyorgy makes a guest appearance on two tracks as a vocalist and lyricist.

The album is a recollective act, i.e. it speaks the same language as that of the hard-bop pioneers, Barney Kessel and his famous trio for instance, but it does so with an accent; that of a 27-year old Canadian artist whose inmost voice has been coloured by the likes of neo-bop master Mark Turner. Mathieu has had the chance to study with modern guitarists of renown Peter Bernstein and Alex Goodman.

M FOR MOTHLAND V – Priors, Gloin, Grim Streaker, Absolutely Free, Crasher à la Sala Rossa

Although the Montreal-based label, booking agency, and production company has been in existence since 2015, it will be celebrating five years as Mothland during the M for Montreal event—where it all began. True to form, the band of moths has assembled the most exciting acts in the country (and beyond) for this showcase, which promises to be —once again—one of the highlights of this M for Montreal.

On the program we have the electronified punk of Crasher, whose Street Cleaning Machines of the World EP was one of the best local albums of 2021; the experimental psychedelic rock of Toronto’s Absolutely Free; the crazy art-punk of the Montreal/Brooklyn band Grim Streaker; the noise rock of Toronto’s Gloin, whose album We Found This was just released by Mothland, and last but not least, Priors for a frenetic punk-rock finale. Video artist Anthony Piazza will be on hand to showcase this wild evening.

From humble beginnings, Mothland, who also put on the friendly little Distortion festival, has become a pillar of the psychedelic rock/pop, post-punk, punk, no-wave, art-punk, alternative, and other scenes in Canada. Yonatan Gat, Medicine Singers, Teke Teke, Jessica 93, Fet. Nat, Yoo Doo Right, Meggie Lennon, Lydia Lunch, Material Girls, Spaceface, La Sécurité, Le Prince Harry, The Besnard Lakes, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, Xarah Dion, and many others have all been to Mothland, and many more are still there; a clear indication of the wide range of colours that this little Montreal DIY club has to offer.

Come and celebrate this audacity and musical diversity with them.

Figure marquante de la scène new-yorkaise du jazz avant-gardiste, il nous convie ici à un concert solo où il plonge dans l’imprévu et le moment présent, libéré de toute contrainte, pour explorer le monde sonore qu’offre son instrument. 

Known for his many collaborations with musicians such as Tom Waits, John Zorn, Caetano Veloso and Arto Lindsay, for more than 30 years guitarist Marc Ribot has also gained renown for his own creations. A prominent figure of the New York avant-garde jazz scene, he summons us to a solo concert that delves into the unexpected and the present moment, free of all constraints, to explore the world of sound that his instrument can reveal.

Munie de son 3e EP Amuse-Bouche paru il y a quelques mois, la luxembourgeoise d’origine persiste à tracer des sillons recouverts d’influences hyperpop, alt-pop et noise/industrielle. Fille de deux immigrants de première génération, apologiste des causes féministes et lGBTQ+, elle aborde la musique comme un outil de changement social, attaquant aussi l’inaction face à la crise climatique et la disparité entre les sales riches et les moins nanti.e.s — bien qu’elle s’adonne parfois à des propos plus sentimentaux ou qu’elle fasse état de son amour des pâtes alimentaires.

With her 3rd EP titled “Amuse-Bouche,” released a few months ago, the luxemburgian singer/songwriter persists in ploughing furrows covered with hyperpop, alt-pop and noise/industrial influences. The daughter of two first generation immigrants, and supporters of feminist and lGBTQ+ causes, she approaches music as a tool for social change, also attacking the inaction on the climate crisis and the disparity between the filthy rich and the less fortunate—although she sometimes indulges in more sentimental remarks or mentions her love for pasta.
