LE TIGRE (Kathleen Hanna, JD Samson et Johanna Fateman) s’est formé comme un projet post-riot grrrl obstinément optimiste, voire joyeux, à New York en 1999, à l’époque où Rudy Giuliani était maire et où l’ironie régressive des hipsters (à la VICE Magazine) régnait en maître. Abandonnant l’instrumentation punk traditionnelle, le groupe a associé des rythmes de drum machines et des samples 8-bit en boucle aux riffs de guitare les plus simples et dentelés, ainsi qu’à des appels vocaux, pour écrire les chansons de leur premier album éponyme. Sorti à la fin de l’année, il a été conçu comme une musique “pour la fête après la manifestation”.

Abandoning traditional punk instrumentation, the band paired drum-machine beats and looped 8-bit samples with the simplest, serrated guitar riffs and call-and-response vocals to write the songs on their first, self-titled album. Released late that year, they conceived of it as music “for the party after the protest.”
