Festival international de musique actuelle de Victoriaville : John Zorn, New music for trios

Sun 21 May 2023 • 08:00 pm Jazz
CARRÉ 150 (Salle F. Lemaire) - Victoriaville 46$
· by Rédaction PAN M 360

In the first of two concerts devoted to JOHN ZORN, the master will be bringing new music for two very different trios.

In the past few years, BRIAN MARSELLA (Zion80, Nels Cline Singers) has become ZORN’s go-to piano player for everything jazz-related. And with good reason, as MARSELLA blends Uri Caine’s fierceness with Craig Taborn’s finesse. Suite for Piano, released last summer, is written for piano, doublebass and drum kit. Each movement (with titles like “Sarabande”, “Scherzo” or “Menuet”) wonderfully subverts classical music codes.

Since the “Moonchild” project (2006-2014) reached its conclusion, SIMULACRUM has been ZORN’s “heavy” vehicle of choice. In eight years and nine studio albums (the most recent one is Spinoza, April 2022), its members have developed a remarkable level of synergy around some of ZORN’s most eventful compositions, combining complex lines and ferocious roars from organ and electric guitar.
