Centre PHI : Ilana Harris-Babou – Problems of Leisure

Cinéma Moderne - Montréal 15$
· by Rédaction PAN M 360

The PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art, in collaboration with Film POP, presents Ilana Harris-Babou: Problems of Leisure.
The program brings together seven videos by Ilana Harris-Babou, most of which will have their Canadian premiere. Over the past decade, the artist has reworked popular video formats, indeterminately produced by media conglomerates, advertising agencies or influencers, such as home improvement, cooking or DIY shows, promotional vignettes, or beauty, make-up or wellness tutorials. Often greedily consumed, this content is generally understood as channeling the spirit of pure pleasure or leisure, endlessly reproducible; or else, it’s seen as pointless, screens that hide more pressing issues we should be addressing. Acknowledging their ubiquity in today’s culture, the artist understands them instead as vectors of power; emphasizing the control these videos exert over the organization of our spaces, time and attention in late capitalism, while reinvesting them as sites of critical reagentivity, often tinged with humor.
