Depuis sa création en 1992, le fondateur de Built to Spill, Doug Martsch, a fait de son groupe un projet de collaboration, un ensemble en constante évolution de musiciens incroyables qui font de la musique et se produisent en concert ensemble. Après plusieurs albums et EP, dont l’incontournable classique du indie rock, There’s Nothing Wrong With Love, sorti en 1994 sur le label Sup Pop offshoot Up, Martsch a signé avec Warner Brothers de 1995 à 2016. Lui et ses acolytes ont enregistré six autres albums, incontestablement excellents, pendant cette période.
Si l’impeccable catalogue discographique du groupe est le point d’entrée, Built to Spill en live est une FORCE essentielle à part entière : des morceaux heavy, psychédéliques, mélodiques et viscéraux s’échappant d’amplis qui sonnent comme s’ils étaient alimentés par des camions Mack.
En 2022, Built to Spill revient avec When the Wind Forgets Your Name, l’incroyable nouvel album de Martsch (et aussi son huitième album complet), un mélange complexe et cohérent des idées musicales distinctes des artistes.
