Tripping With Nils Frahm

· by Alain Brunet

All Melody, an opus by multi-talented keyboardist, improviser, and composer Nils Frahm, now has its complement, recorded in front of an audience. A world tour (pre-pandemic) by the German musician was an opportunity to capture different rereadings on stage: of the eight pieces on the programme of this live opus, five from his very beautiful album released in 2018 reappear here with new elements of improvised music, to satiate his fans. It’s been said many times, Frahm has an extraordinary power of attraction. His qualities as a performer, as correct as they may be, have little to do with the virtuosity now demanded of the best pianists in classical music or contemporary jazz; rather, he stands out for his ability to subtly fuse electronics (ambient, techno, etc.), krautrock and prog keyboards, contemporary jazz, and modern classical music. Of all this cohort of composers associated with this polymorphic trend known as neoclassical, Frahm remains unquestionably a leader. Moreover, he’s a powerful catalyst of musical passion for anyone who wants to diversify their aural portfolio, and add significant instrumental forms to his library of the spirit, far beyond those of song or rap.
